Why? Got given the latest all singing & dancing Samsung 10.1 or some such for work. Useless. For work anyway. No excel or word etc. Had to buy "asps" for it. Pants. Every time you move it or touch it something unwanted happens. I could not make much use of it until I had a google account & a Samsung account. So they could steal all my personal info & monopolise my interweb use.
As a telly for watching the interwebs & general time killer it was amazing. No doubt awesome for twatting & face pooping, too, but that's not my thing.
I may just be a technophobic old codger.

Mom, after working with windows / android for more years than I care to think about Ive become an apple man, buy an iPad you will only do it once and you will be impressed.
Now many will come on here and poopoo this but none of them will be apple people for 20 plus years and have then moved over to windows because its a better operating system / better hardware.

Do you like Simple, Restrictive and Over Priced - Get an Ipad
Do you like less restrictive and not over priced - Anything Samsung with Android
My best advice - go to somewhere like PB tech and have a play on their Tablet devices. Tell any Sales people to piss off and that you are just looking. Try and do the following on each:
Go to youtube
Go to Facebook
Go to KB
Open the Email Application
then make a note of which one felt easier - then let us know which one you are thinking of, we will look at the specs and suggest the best bang for buck

They are pretty feckin weird to use, but I've found that typing on a screen is a PITA with my slightly chubby digits and you get used to not worrying that you're going to break the damned thing every time you look at it.. It's the apps you can get for it that would suit me... maybe Mom just wants a fancy taptalk message.

Part of contract says we can't pollute work PC with "crap". That is fine, but sometimes I might want to play on here while on duty. Cant be arsed carting lap top about the place.

The advantage is that they normally have demo units powered up, unless you are used to one tablet philosophy (I prefer Android based devices as I always find Apple layout/methodology weird) then the difference is really going to be down to what you prefer.

Here's why you should get a tablet. (http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/buying-advice/tablets/3450587/netbook-vs-tablet/)
If you decide Netbook, I only ever hear good things about ASUS... especially in regards to build quality.

+1 on PB tech. Got me lappie off em a couple of years ago, full warranty ect ect. I noticed after a bit that my lappie "squawked" now & again. No biggie until I became addicted to spotify. You don't want squawking when your listening to White Stripes at full tittie. I contacted them with 6 days of warranty left to go. No dramas, sent it off & got it back. Still squawked.. Bassid. Back on the phone. Out of warranty by now but no dramas, send it back. Took over 2 weeks to get it back, waiting for hardware from wherever... Any hoo, back it came, problem solved. Cost me a courier fee.
PB tech is now my first port of call for tecchie gubbins.
The tablet thingie? Despite my earlier trashing I can see the point. But. Tapping an on screen keyboard is a pain in the date. Having to switch between key boards is rubbish. Using the funky, silver "pen" is weird, retro. It's not intuitive how to delete & secure stuff, they run on them asp thingies, which led me to much frustration.
You can accesorise, a key board dock was available for the tablet I had, basically turned it into a very basic lap top. That appealed to me. Nice wee case with a key board & your tablet stuck in it.
Got to say battery life was outstanding. It sat on the dining room table & beeped at every new email for 10 days! Screen quality, even in bright sun light was surrealy (that's a new word!) good. I think with tablets they, manufacturers, net servers, ect, are more effective at dragging the $$$ out of your pocket.
Apple v Android? Yeah, go have a tutu.
Oh, unless you like staring at your lap it's really hard to get the l'il bassids in a place where you can use it & look at it. Cerealy, strange things.

I have had a tablet for a while now. Got a Samsung 10.1 16GB and wifi only for some amount of money: it seemed cheap. I hate typing on the screen though so for posting on the internets it sucks though you can bluetooth a keyboard to it but then you are carrying two lumps of stuff around. Things it is GREAT for: slumped in a chair idly internet surfing and watching youtube and stuff while SWMBO watches Downton Abbey or something. I have the Zinio app and magazines in electronic format are REALLY cheap. I was buying that Classic Racer magazine for like $18 an issue in paper form and its ~$6 in electronic form. There is a book app also which i havent used.
I can tether it to my mobile phone when I am away and use it to surf the internet: great for maps and finding restaurants and brothels and swingers clubs. My phone might be smart but the screen is too friggin small to be useful.
I bought a crash case for ours which ups the heft but provides shock protection if you drop it or its travelling with you.
As a serious work tool its of limited use, but as a toy its very useful.

If you want a tablet and are not prepared to flash an aftermarket OS, then get a Nexus device as their plain version of Android is about the only OEM Android distro that doesn't make me want to throw the device out the window every time I use it. The rest of them are all bloated as fuck (just like most Android phones). Apple is great if you like paying twice as much as you should for outdated technology that is a generation or 2 behind the flagship competition, along with all the extra bullshit you get from them.

I suggest going for an android device (or ipad if thats your thing) but DON'T go for a windows tablet, I recently got a windows phone and they're in a world of their own. Problems arise instantly in the form of not being able to transfer contacts. You can't use the same game profile across different platforms. It's a whole new kettle of fish. Android is much much simpler to learn and use. There are plenty of free games and apps and just things that will amuse you and keep you content.

Im not a Mac fanboy by any means (I even admit to liking Windows 8) and the Apple way frustrates me sometimes but iPads are rock solid. I've had mine for 3 years its never crashed or slowed down despite my G/F kids best efforts to have all apps and games running at the same time. They thrash it for hours playing 3d games till the battery dies mid game - no dramas just plug it in and away it goes again. The newer ipads might look better but I have no need to update it - runs as fast as the day I got it - airplay through apple tv is awesome too...

I haven't had any problems with vanilla Android either. You'll find that most complaints about poor battery life, bad UI, slow performance etc are not due to any inherent flaws within the Android kernel itself, but because of third party bloatware (like TouchWiz from Samsung, among others). All this extra "rubbish" is completely unecessary, and often ruins the simple, intuitive UI that Google have developed for their vanilla Android versions.
After having a 2012 Nexus 7 with the official Google OS, as well as numerous phones with Cyanogenmod, all the usual problems that macfags go on about simply disappeared, and I'm left with a very fast, stable OS that's easy to use with little unwanted crap.

That's one area where Apple's restrictiveness is a big bonus. Microsoft should do something similar in restricting shite on OEM installs. Even HP seem to manage to make half a dozen different programmes and take up half a GB of drive space and a handful of startup programmes just for printer and scanner software.

All those negatives of buying Apple products generally significantly outweighs the few positives when comparing similar products, eg not comparing flagship Apple products with cheap Android based devices.
But otherwise, it really is frustrating that OEM installs (both ARM and x86 based) are generally so infested with bloatware that more people probably are shifting to "cleaner" platforms like Apple because of this. This is why I never use the stock OS on any Android device I own, unless it's a Nexus as that's pretty lightweight from stock.

Basically, if you want a device that's easy to use, reasonably priced, and with good performance, look at the Nexus products.
The first thing you need to is play with some tablets in a few shops, and find out which screen size you like. 7" screens and 10(ish)" screens seem the most common.
The 2013 Nexus 7 would be my pick if you're happy with a 7" screen. (http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=2082755)
If you're poor, then the 2012 Nexus 7 is a good choice. (http://pricespy.co.nz/product.php?p=1469131)
Don't get conned by a slick sales(wo)man into paying too much; always check on PriceSpy first to find out what deals you can get, and the chaps down at Harvey Norman/Dicksmith/whatever store may do a price match if you ask. Google search is also great to narrow down some models and read reviews on them.
The other brands of Android devices, like Samsung, Sony etc tend to have a more complex (but not better) interface that can be more difficult to use. If in doubt, hunt around for one to play around on in a shop.

Actually I've had near 20 years of windows and computers in general, still have a windows 7 setup in the studio fire it up every 5 days or so, as some of the software I use is old enough that it needs a serial port.
When I fire it up I go away for 10 minutes as it downloads and does all its security updates, then shuts down starts up and all that bullshit.
Have to pay good money to have virus/security protection.
We have one iMac in the house used for all sorts of online stuff no virus protection or anything else never had an issue with it, more than 2 years old now never needed re formatting and the op system re loaded.
Admittedly my own experience but I never have issues with the apple stuff not even the appleTV that removes all the tiresome add in youtube vids.
My only gripe would be I would love a larger screen on the iPhone

Why do you need to pay for malware protection?
If you're doing your security updates as you should be, then you shouldn't end up with the machine frequently rebooting. Just do all the updates it needs, and it should be fine for a while.
I know plenty of Windows machines that haven't had to have their boot drive formatted in over 2 years. My Linux machine is rock solid too.
