View Full Version : Thinking of starting a new website. And shit.

Now that I've got a bit more spare time on my hands, I'm keen to start a website to show user uploaded pics and videos of bad drivers on NZ roads. The kind of muppets who kill by running red lights, driving on the wrong side of the roads, cutting people off etc. It would be even better to include number plates wherever possible. Because more and more people have video cameras to record their ride, and since almost everyone has a camera phone on them, it shouldn't be too hard to find content. Could even have a "muppet of the week award" or something like that. Spreading it around on failbook could also be a good idea, and hopefully the cops will do something about these idiots.
Maybe the videos could be hosted on Youtube to save on server space and bandwidth. I don't know fuck all about web design (I've done a very quick into course on it) and don't have the resources to host the site myself, so I'd need someone with web design skills to do this. I could learn a bit of coding though. I will probably get the site hosted with a hosting company since it probably won't be particularly big (with externally hosted media). Just an idea, but I think it could really have potential if it's set up correctly.

Think someone tried this a while back, problem is those who do such on purpose don't give a fuck what is on the web, and those who do give a fuck probably did it by accident, and don't deserve it being posted online.

My first advise would be to get a Legal Opinion
Although the fall back of not being responsible for User Generated Content is good, someone could easily post something that could land you in hot water.
Once you have made sure you have covered your arse - then you can look at building the site

If it's filmed in a public place where the person has no reasonable expectation of privacy, then you can legally film away.

All well and good until someone posts a video of a GSXR600 pushing 200 kmh down Tram Rd ;) Hypothetically speaking.

I have nothing against speeding on quiet countryside roads. What I do have a problem with is selfish cunts who deliberately endanger other road users just because they can. With some of the driving I've seen, it's really no less dangerous than taking pot shots at pedestrians with a rifle while driving.

The Legal danger isn't so much about the Video itself - but if people make comments/Insults to the video or post personal information - similar 'Name and Shame' websites have had issues with Legal problems resulting from this

Wouldn't the be more likely to care if the complainant went directly to them with the evidence?

So the cops can do what exactly? Give them an infringement notice that they're not going to give a fuck about? It's better to publicly shame them instead.

This.
I'm just saying - apart from being a great laugh for the folks on KB - it would sure suck to be caught by your own website.
I'm not even thinking of being charged for the specific incident on the video. It was suggested on the 'eat your SD card' thread that the police can use video proof of dangerous driving at one time to validate charges of dangerous driving at another time (eg. crash).
Totally agree that your website would be popular though, and you'd probably do quite well in monetarising your youtube videos, especially if you get something juicy that is picked up by the mainstream media.

i had this idea ages ago.
Be an amalgamation whore. Use blogspot (yes, do as blog.
smokeyhatesjew.blogspot.com) and either get peopl to send to you to upload to jewtube, or links.
No server, no code, freedom of speech and shit.
Id nail down some rulez, actual submitters name given with isp email addy, date time and place.
Certainly be good to get repeat offenders from a few sauces..
Then it comes down to advertising.
Im going to point my cams backwards so i can get pix of the jews who snitch me out, then break their faces.

I do websites for a living, from conception to hosting. My advice to save on $ is not do windows hosting (which is what I do) and sql server as these cost a bit. Even if u find a cheap hoster like GoDaddy there are cavets such as restricted size of the databases.
Your website sounds like a typical cataloging system - a library of vids and pics, not too dissimilar to your average porn site.
There are cheaper options (oveseas contractors), but for a bespoke site u should have a graphics designer who you can talk to in person to get your ideas.
Since you have time and keen on learning I recommend you need to start with basic HTML then javascript and jquery. To keep your database hosting costs down look at MySql.
o the joy.

The advice was also to smokey, the idea just doesn't seem anywhere near as well thought out as it needs to be for a money making venture.

Yep - while there will be a large proportion of drivers who are [insert your favourite stereotype here] - there will also be some folks that you don't want to fuck off.

LOL - the Surveillance State (tm) - brought to you by smokeu.
On a related note - it's funny how people used to be all paranoid about Big Brother and panoptical surveillance, now they take their own video, tag (name) the people and upload it themselves onto BB's servers. I bet it takes a load of TPTB to have all these work done for them - they don't even need to outsource it to Fijindiastan.

Now I am interested. Bad driving website? Nah, not much. If I was really so bored that I wanted to watch some video of bad driving I am sure there are millions of sites out there. Some with guns and zebras and stuff. The odd granny on the wrong side of the motorway in Auckland does nothing for me really.

a poor driver with anger management issues.
Likely someone who'd use their suv as a weapon against a motorbike if they felt wronged.
Exactly the kind youd want off the road.

i wouldnt go for that shit. But certainly a searchable db.
And with an open format that allows said driver/person registered in respect, a chance to explain or appologise, smidsy. Of course, the serially retarded would become obvious.

Dude in today's paper got done for 206km/h in Dunedin. A "menace" the judge called him. 18 month ban, three months curfew, 100 hours community work and nine months 'supervision' whatever that is. Funny that. Drive on the wrong side of the road around blind corners and cause a crash and the punishment is less severe.

Our production manager was speeding on "a quiet country road".
Crested a hill brow doing about 180, (not all that fast),
Slammed into a herd of dairy cows crossing over for the afternoon milk.
He lived, 3 cows didn't.
3months off work with various broken bits.
Never understood why people think country roads are great to ride fast on. The hazards are random, and rarely signposted.

That's why one should always drive/ride at a speed that suits the conditions, and slow down around intersections and other places where visibility may be impaired.
