View Full Version : Christchurch to Dusty Butt, Fri 28 Feb 2014

2nd February 2014, 20:40
Once again the semi organised ride that Matt has put together for us for the last few years will be on again.
For those of you doing the Dusty Butt ride who are staying in Christchurch Thursday night and want to meet up with other DB entrants for a leisurely day ride down to Fairlie register here.
The plan is to meet at the car park of Yaldhurst Tavern ('the Yaldy') on Yaldhurst Rd at 0830 for briefing then head away soon after.
The route will involve riding up a section of the Waimakariri river recreation area before heading up the Rakaia river thru Glenfalloch Station to Lake Heron Station then on to Mayfield for gas and a feed before heading thru the Orari Gorge to Fairlie.
I have spoken to all four Highcountry stations that we cross and have secured us access. The tariffs for that access are $10 per rider per station so I will need to collect $40 (4 x $10) per person at the briefing.
The route is reasonably tame and is generally suitable for two up riding or for loaded up solos. Last year the river crossing coming out of Orari was axle deep. Today (2 Feb) the river levels appear lower than last year.
Last year we had 50 odd riders in our group so it's a good chance to catch up with fella kbers and a great way to make the most of the weekend.
If you're keen let me know by way of a reply so I can collate numbers to pre warn the farmers
I'll run point on the day and I'll be looking for 4 volunteers who have done the route previously to sweep 1 of the 4 sections each.
I'll see you all on the 28th
Cheers Chris

In 2012 and 2013 I have that Friday ride to the Dusty gps logged as taking 10 hours and 10 minutes both years, so with that in mind, times to remember...
to quote the DB rider info:
Dinner commences 7.00pm .
All Riders MUST attend for briefing at 8.00pm.
Good luck, it's a great start to the weekend but keep it moving or you'll be eating the scraps.

Yup good point! But I've got 9Hrs06 (0850-1754) for last year with a leisurely 90 minute lunch at Mayfield so I think we could easily tighten it up a bit.

I recorded 0848 to 1856 in 2013.
The last two of us probably burned the extra hour over your log drying out and finally getting a drowned KTM to actually start after everyone else had left when it 'appeared' to run ok when first out of the water.
Wasn't much food left when I arrived but I think dinner had started a little earlier then too.
If someone could flick me a txt when you get to Mayfield, be good to know how your day is progressing.

I could be. I'll be on my way home from rotorua. I'm on the 7am bluebridge that Thursday. I'll either be riding to Nelson and staying with a mate and doing the rainbow on Friday, or if he can't make it then I'll come home through the Molesworth or rainbow on Thursday.

Just home from the ride soaked to the skin, but with a big grin..bloody good ride!
Weather was ok to start with, low cloud and not wet until we got to Lake Clearwater where it absolutely pissed down all the way to Mt Sommers, at this point I pulled the pin (just a day ride for me, work tonight) the other 30 odd riders carried on south, I'm guessing that they will probably skipp Orari Gorge and just head to Fairlie by road.
Shingle was all dry and dusty and track from Glenfalloch was pretty dry. No break downs and only one wee off that I saw, god bless ya Kenny you're always entertaining to ride with
Thanks to Chris for organising the ride this year, I certainly had a good day out, best of luck to all the DustyButtas

I think only 8 did Orari Gorge. Team leader's Gagiva didn't look pretty afterwards.
Nope, it was a sad day for the Elefant. By the time we reached the top of Orari gorge saddle my E-09 front had let me down twice (once at a good pace), the rear brake had developed an airlock and the throttle cable had jammed and it was teaming with rain. Needles to say my moral was sinking like a stone. Sliding down the mud and grass track on the far side with no throttle, no brake, & no traction things went from very bad to very much worse!
Thx to the two brothers riding with us providing moral support( don't know named sorry). Once on the flat I was able to achieve about 80kph using the fast idle/choke lever to make it back to Fairlie just in time for dinner!
Lessons:
E-09 is a totally inadequate front tire for wet conditions.
Don't take a heavy bike through Orari in the wet.
Many bits of terrain that are inconsequential on a trail bike become a lot more 'interesting' on a big bike.
Was feeling pretty bleak on Friday night and thought I might have blown it before it before the event proper had even started with visions of the trailer of humiliation looming large, however a late bedtime saw the trottle cable move again and late depart on sat saw the rear brake bled and we got underway and reached Waimate in time to say hi to TA and Ryan as they left.

Thanks for organising the ride - just a shame the weather let us down before Mayfield. I was soaked and knew i would struggle in the Orari in the wet - certainly noticed the extra weight this year over the whole weekend so had a nice slow pace - sorry thepom lol. You still managed to fly by in the Lannamores tho Pouakai - i came off twice in there and had Matts voice ringing in my head "your front hasnt got much tread" - next time will make sure i have a new front on - the tenere is heavy once it has your leg trapped in a rut

Booked time off work. Have just signed up and paid (you get one free T shirt). I sorted accommodation a while back. So now i just make sure I'm fit. And yes i do think its expensive. People pay $50 to go on trail rides and struggle to do more than 100 km. Plus you gotta get there ( whole day $100 easy. So not to bad when you add it up.

Myself and my usual accomplices have decided to do our own thing this year, can't really justify the DB entry cost anymore given we have done it so many times
As we already had the leave booked we have put together our own 4 day ride taking in some of the Dusty route but mostly new terain.
Have managed to secure access to several new to me High country properties around Twizel so we'll be mostly in the Mckenzie country exploring...have fun

There's no chance of an accidental bumping - unless you have access to cross the same stretch of (sea) water. My lips are sealed until the trip happens.
Well done on getting the properties that you have, it's the private land riding that makes exploring such good fun.
