Hi Everyone,

I have been riding a pretty weak 50cc scooter for nearly 2 years now and I am thinking of stepping it up a large notch and looking at getting a decent 125-250cc road bike to get to grips with (something that can handle bumpy Christchurch) does anyone have any recommendations?

I have had a good look around and alot of people rave about the suzuki GN's saying that they can handle hell but I would love feedback from riders who have been through what I am going to go through, I love driving on 2 wheels it makes me feel free plus when I first jumped on a 50cc scooter, the feeling of freedom I had has had me hooked

Kawasaki ZX10R is a good learners bike. Wanna buy my bike? Let me know if interested.

Hi
I loved my GN250 and it could certainly handle bumpy roads much better than my sportier Spada now. Can't really speak for the other 250s out there though.

I would recommend go for a 250 and not a 125. Which bike you should get depends on your size and weight and what you want the bike for. Have a sit on a few bikes and see what you like most.

Do you want to use the bike just for commuting around Chch?

PS: Ignore that other guy and welcome to kb :)

Thank you all for the advice, I have been looking around and feel something like a naked or cruiser will be up my alley just because the sports bikes being amazing in general just don't seem to be my cup of tea

Also I was curious if anyone knows a teacher who would do lessons with me but have a bike that I can use just so I can get the feel of using gears and learn how to handle a bike because I have seen a gn250 up in Nelson that I want to buy and drive back to christchurch on

Best $20 I've spent. You'll cover everything and get the hang of it pretty quick. Taranaki based, I was apprehensive about heading over Mt Messenger but we did it 4x. This was after slow control and emergency stopping etc, etc... If you work it in with the Nelson Trainer you may have the same trainer - Andrew Templeton (Templeton Roadsafe) - Good guy, knows his stuff - laid back approach to passing on the info too.

IMHO Start with a 250cc (if not looking at other LAMS bikes). I got a Honda CBF-250 a month ago and haven't looked back! I'm happy starting at the bottom rung. For the 90% of riding I do it suits me well...

Although I do hear the faint reverb of a 600cc+ bike in the not too distant future...

Have you considered a cross over bike? The roads down here are so shit that it would probably be the best option plus you get to go out of town and explore too.
GN's are great...for commuting only

You missed my post when I suggested a street legal trail bike which is what this poster is suggesting but like I said many modern ones do not have very comfortable seats. Honda make a street legal farmbike which would do well on ChCh roads too a 200cc I think.

thanks ^^ I have been speaking to quite alot of people asking them for advice and everyone has told me a completely different thing, I have been told to try sports bikes, cruisers, naked, duel purpose, dirt bikes and one guy told me to buy a vintage Harley, (no chance for me haha) but I am going to try alot of them and see which is best for me, some time this week I am going to test drive a Kawasaki 400, a Suzuki GN 250 1984 and a Honda XL250 which ever captures my heart I will buy and use my lil scooter as part exchange, thankfully, using the scooter for the past 2 years has helped me get along here and there, hell I have tested her by driving it out ashburton a few times and she still goes strong, all I know is I am going to get the shit trolled out of me for writing this, but I am happy to have used a scooter to start my passion for biking and I dont care if people think I am a scooterfag because I have used one, its my path to get where I am today and thats that :2thumbsup

i better rephrase that:msn-wink: i am baiased:cool: i like my kwaka's, the 91 zzr1100 i had was an awesome bike and i would say better than the 99 zzr1100 i bought new, and the kwaka farm bikes and quads i have owned and currently still own (though im no longer farming so just toys now) have all been great machines.
at the end of the day you need to test ride and find what makes you feel confident and comfortable whether that be a sports bike, cruiser or trailie. good luck and enjoy what you end up with :niceone:

well I had a ride on it yesterday and found it very comfy, the acceleration was good, I could easily keep up with the traffic on moorehouse avenue, and if I wanted I could quite easily outrun the traffic no problem but I have to admit the bike was really heavy, then again I am used to scooter so what do you expect haha :2thumbsup

Since you like the power of a 400 I would not test ride anything smaller. You would get used to the heavier weight over time but take your time. How did it handle the bumpier roads? Do you still think you will test a road/trail bike?
You may find around town they handle lighter than a road bike for the same size motor but as I said they are taller to sit on.

I am going to the track with my mates this weekend so I will get to taste something along the lines of a trail bike, if I like it I may veer to it plus it will be a great learning experience to me

unless you intend to ride off road, (which by the way is highly recommended as a good place to learn some good handling skills), forget about a dedicated traillie, if you are going to do longer trips you are better off with a road bike unless you go to an adventure bike somewhere in the 650cc region, last time i was in CHCH it wasn't the bumpy roads that were a problem it was the downright fucken arrogant self absorbed driving that was way more dangerous, and i got so fucken sick of hearing that people were like it cause they were so stressed about the quakes, all they really needed t do was pull there fuckin heads out of their asses and start treating everybody with respect, hence i avoid CHCH like the plague it has become
