View Full Version : Best way to get to Tauranga from Auckland?

Afternoon team,
Im meant to be joining my GF in tauranga for Waitangi day. will be leaving Wednesday night.
Now I was thinking just going down state highway 2 but can imagine it'll be quite boring sitting at 10,000 rpm for 2.5 hours.
I dont mind if it takes abit longer but what's a more fun way to ride down.
Haven't been on a decent ride since I got back into riding so will be good for the experience.
Also what do you think about headphones and riding?

Any insight will be greatly appreciated

This is the abbreviated short route ...

For the recommended full route ... you need a South Island road map ... :devil2:

You have a piece of skirt in Tauranga and your only doing 10000rpm all the way there.
Used to have a FZR250, quite happy at 13500 rpm all the way to palmy, oil consumption may increase :)

Headphones and riding, already discussed in other threads.

I assume by best, you don't want the fastest, as SH2 or similar is pretty much it. This is what I've used a few times: http://goo.gl/maps/R3cWd

Go to matamata then over the Kaimais, mainly straight roads. Don't take the Katikati/Waihi route. You will get stuck behind some slow cunt in the gorge and there isn't alot of passing room.

I've done the Matamata route in less than 2 hours before but it was going on sunset and I was farken boosting

Cheers,
Nah misses is down there helping her sister who is due 2 days ago. So was going to meet them down there.

Was just going to use headphones for map directions really. as music will probably be distracting.

Thanks for the different routes mentioned

Here's (https://goo.gl/maps/XIxCq) my personal favourite.

Edit: Here's (https://goo.gl/maps/a0JYo) an even better route if you have the time.

In my opinion its not distracting. I always play music when im going further than down the road. It will help break the journey up

im the same, even back in the eighties i used to have the walkman playing in speakers i mounted in the helmet, best bet is try it, if you don't like it then stop and turn em off, not hard really, thats my 2 cents worth and at the end of the day its only my opinion that really matters :Punk:

I wasn't aware a map had a fun to ride a motorcycle scale on it. Hence why I asked. My mistake I will go back to keeping to myself. As you were

OK, protip, look for the roads that aren't straight. These will be more interesting than the ones that are straight.

Asking a biker site the "best way" to get from Auckland to Tauranga is ridiculous. 2 weeks ago, I had to get from Auckland to Palmy. Last year, same thing. Last year, I did it leaving at 6am and getting in a little after midday, same day, going via Paraparas and 500km. This year, it took me 2.5 days and 1200km, going via East Cape and Gentle Annie. Unfortunately the Cook Strait ferry added too much cost and time, but maybe another time.

Part of the fun of riding is discovering all those hidden gems while you're out riding or taking the longer route because it's more fun. "Best" is extremely subjective.

It is not that ridiculous really. What's ridiculous is taking 2.5days as opposed to 2.5hrs to get there - he's on a promise FFS!! Poor Mr Monkeymsea is just wanting to double his fun - a nice quick jaunt to Tauranga and a root at the end.

Don't you fret your little head about rubing anyone up the wrong way. This is KB, nothing but rubing goes on here!

Are you an idiot? There is plenty of places to pass through the gorge. The matamata route is fuckin dumb on a motorbike. And if you think you are boostin to do it in 2 hours on a motorbike you must be retarded, thats how long it takes in a mazda 121.

The best direct way to go to have some fun and hurry to get your dick wet is - pearoa, tearoha, old tearoha road, kaimais, tauranga.

A bit of what Nodrog suggested but start in south east Auckland either from Howick - Whitford - Clevedon or Takanini to Clevedon then Clevedon - Kawakawa - Orere point then down the firth of thames coast. Good roads, lots of bendy bits, sheep and not too many tourists.

I would then do Kopu to just before Pauanui and turn off the Whangamata then do the coast down to Tauranga but you may find half of Auckland is heading south tonight as well..... that could be a bit un exciting.

Hitcher is correct tho, get the AA road maps and look at them, there is a huge choice of routes and adding an hour ot two to the trip adds to the fun.

Have a good ride!

But then the whole thread is pointless. "best" when expecting a root at the end is simply a straight line... except the thought that motorcycling is a means to an end is all head explody.

There are four basic ways into Tauranga . and a ourth vairiant ..

One goes through Waihi .. One through Whakatane, (boring) one over the Kaimais (boring) and two through Rotorua ...

So any route from Auckland that goes through Waihi, Rotorua, over the Kaimais or from Whakatane wil get you to Tauranga ... Too many choices to list

How long have you got to do it in??? I like the Auckland, New Plymouth Wellington Rotorua route myelf ... or do the loop - Auckland New Plymouth Wellington Napier Gisborne Whakatane (throw in east Cape if you like)
