View Full Version : More money than sense

Ok this describes me in some ways as my plans for my 250 where but now been squashed.

My point in this thread was I was tootling along on my GSXR 250 which is fast enough for a sewing machine, when I guy pulls up next to me on a Hayabusa. Ok so he had all the kit, matching riding gear all stamped and pretty even his helmet and boots. Very nice but a bit pretentious. Off the mark he nailed me to the ground and took. First corner I passed him?????? He rode the clutch and dropped down to about 20km and hour WTF??

So my question as a fairly new rider is:

Is this normal? Will I be plagued with guys with more dollars but no sense as I learn to ride better?

Haha, as a Busa rider with all the gear (and 25 years of riding to go with it) the story is usually the other way around...the noob on the shitter wants to have a go and gets dropped like last weeks' lunch.

But hey, you'll find the more money than sense approach in any area of life. Plenty of rich pricks with fancy cars/bikes can't drive/ride for shit.

Then again, someone on here wanted to spend a small fortune on hotrodding a shitty 250...oh hang on, wasn't that you? :bleh:

a friend once told me, people on other bike will either admire your bike or challenge you it is a fairly common thing, he always tells me if this happens, ignore them and go at your pace, not worth crashing your ride ;)

Yeah that was me I have changed my mind and will just ride it for fun til I can afford something better and more useful to my money, still not giving up the turbo dream but might save up for the Busa.

It was only 20meters to the corner so i had to laugh, he could accelerate hard but had no idea how to turn is all. Still any race he would kick my ass no point dreaming a 250 can ever compete.

Good on you! Spend enough time on the road and you'll see plenty of funny shit. Restraint is the key...although sometimes soooo boring.

Check out this ZX10R (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-693808120.htm) and this Hayabusa (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-680883529.htm).

You're better off buying something that someone else has lost a fuckload of money on and done all the hard work than attempting to do it yourself.

In the mean time have learnt a hell of a lot just reading the forums here and that has already made a big change to the way I ride. Who knew how much you had to do to turn a motorbike at speed...:msn-wink:

True always better for someone else to spend the money first. Will keep an eye out but happy with the 250 Gixxer for now, it is fast enough around town, open road a bit slow but still keeps up and a good bike to practice on.

Meh, spend enough time on the road and a normal "streetable" bike will rise to the top of the wishlist...

haha people used to roll up beside me when i was on the rd, and rev a bit, and before the lights would go green id really spool it up, and then when they did, i'd putt off from the lights, not even touch powerband and wave as they left me in their dust, haha, that was with some guy on a new yellow fireblade and another with a gun metal 'busa.

Though there was this one time I got the better of some guy on a ninja 400, he didn't look too pleased that his fancy new bike got beaten by an old 2 banger, haha!

Give it welly if you know it'll win, haha

Or he had spotted a potential hazard you had not. Or he didnt feel like riding with a 250 buzzing about. Or he was turning into his drive.

He is on a Busa. His ability to beat you in a race is unquestioned. Not everybody that comes up to another rider wants to race. Some just want a quiet ride.

Spend your money on rider training. :woohoo:

Drag racing thread! Yup, it's all about your wrist action & what you got in the engine room. Riding a bike on a road with corners is a different kettle of fish.
That takes skill.

You'll never stop learning. Riding a bike through corners is probably what requires the most skill of all on a bike.

Don't forget that for every $1 you spend on a vehicle modifying it, you're lucky to get $0.25 back at sale time. You're better off focusing on your riding skills with something that has easily manageable power like your current bike, as opposed to something properly fast. Get some riding training with a qualified instructor soon. Just remember, look around the corner, as the bike will go where you look.

I'm guessing the busa rider would have his reasons for slowing down. And even if he had all the matching gear, doesn't make him pretentious, maybe that's what makes him happy, having spent his hard earned dollars on something that makes him feel good. Bigger bikes don't always want to race (same goes for smaller bikes), different riding styles. Some people take off fast, some slow etc.

I do get annoyed when I have little 250's buzzing around me doing stupid shit. :ar15:

You won't be plagued by people with more money than sense, but be wary of being plagued by your own idiocy as you learn to ride. If it seems dumb, it probably is. Ride safe.

Just remember though what the bike is, how old or modern it is, or what capacity it is is absolutely no gauge of the riders ability, it's what's between the riders ears that's the important bit

+1 to that. Better to ride on the road within safety margins and mindful of the speed limit than swap your bike ride for an immediate ambulance or 6 month bus ride. The track seems a good place to see how quick you are on corners, where you'll see some damn fine riding that gives you a reality check

Wasn't me bra.
I think you will find that the busa HARDLY dragged you off. He probably didn't even get above 5000rpm

On a side note. That zx10 turbo is very nice. To bad its only running 6psi, at 12 that thing would be a handful!

Go on then, tell me. What is the point of a Hyabusa if you are going to stick to the speed limits? In fact what is the point of any modern non-cruiser type bike bigger than 500cc if you go no faster than 104km/h?

I have never understood that.

I think its the perception that they are not as experienced as me and this was proven when a scooter overtook me on the left and then pulled in front of me while I was in a line of traffic.

That is the basis for perceiving no one is as experienced as you... 47 years experience.. (Wasn't it?)

Well, If I owned a car and just rode on weekends, then maybe a toy would be nice, maybe an RC8 for track and road blats, but I don't, my busa is my car, so it needs to take me everywhere, and then shopping when I need it, and a passenger and it needs to do commutes plus cross country between cities. The extra power helps in all of that, the size for me makes more comfortable than pretzeling myself onto a six hundred and it is easier to live with than a 1000 sports, the luggage capacity is better and wind protection on longer rides is superb. All of this with the fact that when I want to tear it up, I can. It can be ridden lazy or ridden hard. The busa is a great real world bike. Mine has no traction control or ABS and I ride it in A mode, wet or dry. It'll bite you if you don't know what it's capable of.

Yeah I've got a Busa and yes at times I'll ride like a nutter. But for the most part it's akin to walking softly but carrying a big stick. Bit like aiming at a soft target with a .50 cal when a.338 cal would be more than enough

Nah, not really. I ride mainly for the buzz I get from the acceleration and the speed of my bike. I know this is frowned upon by the authorities but that's the way I am. I just can't accept the fact that people will buy a Blackbird/Busa whatever and then claim not to speed. A complete and utter waste and, if true, really does point to the mine is bigger than yours mentality. ital916 says the luggage capacity is good and wind protection is superb. Wahey, the same could be said for a Burgman. Luckily he saves himself by admitting to tearing it up, which is what bikes are for, otherwise we would all be on GN250's.

:shifty: do as I say....not as I do. It's too late to save me, I have an addicition to acceleration, I just pick my moments is all . Reminds me, that time of the year to give sacrifice to Ahhgroundskygroundsky, one of the Gods of Speed

Well let's be blunt about it...hopefully by the time you ride or own a Busa you'll have amassed sufficient self discipline to survive the experience.

The funny thing is, a Busa or a ZX14 for that matter, are rather docile bikes until you crank the revs up. Being able to crack 200 km/h in 3rd gear is funny, no two ways about it...the only proviso being that you pull that stunt in the right place :innocent:

It's a split personality bike the bus, mine is a gentle giant up to 5k, after that, it switches into a complete animal. Same with the zx, but same with most thous. I see no point in the modes though, I leave it in full power rain or shine.

Unfortunately, over here, all the cashed up FIFO workers decide they want a bike for their weeks in town, so it's out to buy a Busa...(or an 1198)..Not ZX14's strangely enough. They're everywhere - blitzing the straights and spearing off into trees on the corners......it's all rather sad, really. Whenever a Busa pulls up, you feel yourself thinking....christ, another wanker with an wallet problem.....saw one fall off, pulling out from their park in Toodyay last weekend...nice new white Busa - on to it's side, tossing the rider off the seat onto the road after 2 m's...........
