I found the following link that states where you can park a bike at the airport...

http://scootnz.co.nz/parking-2/wellington-airport-motorcycle-parking/

...but no where have I found info on if its paid or free parking. I believe I recall seeing bikes parked near the roundabout and I suspect thats where Id want to go as its covered by a ramp up to the departure drop-off. So what gives? Can I pass around the gates and park?

thought it was free parking he was after. In case you don't get it, when you park a bike you aint riding it anymore

I bet the weather in Wellingdick is a bit better than over there. Like a lot of the country they took a pounding.

its pissing with rain & cold, but we've had good weather for a while & by comparison it feels churlish to complain.

Rules are if you can get past the barriers you can park for free* & you can get past Wellington Airport barriers on a bike

If you're still worried, bikes being able to get past the barrier at the airport was by design; bikes are allowed to park for free.

* provided you don't take a usable cage space

I've parked several times in that area where the bikes are parked near the up-ramp to the departures (actually I think the up-ramp is now closed), near the place whee they park fancy cars. I've never paid and just ride out past the barriers. I think that is permitted.
I haven't heard of theft problems there. Indeed, I know a guy who regularly travels to Auckland and leaves his bike there for several days at a time. That said, I haven't left mine there overnight.

A thread resurrection here - Wellington Airport have recently prohibited bikes from parking in the area close to the exit barriers (In the dead space next to the bicycle racks and close to where the Airport Flyer bus arrives/departs).

They have been put up in the last couple of weeks and the official bike parking area is now on Level one - You go up the ramp to the 'Covered' parking area and it's signposted as you head in.

All very nice and sectioned off - But you'll pay $14/day for the privilege. Don't get caught out - Though how much grace they'll give to the bikes already parking in the old area is anyone's guess. :(
