Hey all I have almost got my fzr up to wof standard just need to mount the dash cluster and wire it up but things never being easy, the plastic connections from the bike wiring to the gauge wiring don't match up!
As this is my first bike I have no idea how to re-wire it and cant find a wire diagram anywhere so all help and hints is appriciated :)
Bike is a 1989 FZR400R 3en1

Yeah it's not entirely clear to me what the issue is. Is it the same cluster that came off this bike? It can't be that hard.....
If it's not the original cluster, what makes you think you got the right cluster for the bike?

sorry was a bit brief long day :P
when i bought the bike the speedo had been replaced because the old one had broken apparently so this one was supplied but not fitted. It is pretty much identical as a standard one except the mount bolts are about 20mm off so I think it may just be a cluster from another year of fzr? Im not an expert though i will take photos tomorrow

It is pretty much identical as a standard one except ...
Highlighted ... are the key words ...
Identical ... means identical .... as in .... the same thing.
Pretty much identical ... means not identical ... and as you have found ... can be in fact quite different.
Even if it looks the same ...

top left some pretty thick gauge wire. Is key on cluster? If so thews will be your acc and starter.
The rest will be sensors, will the bike run without?
If so, run it, check all the wires for signals with led probe, neutral, high beam, indicate etc. The rpm *may* be a very fast flashing signal unles its got a cable coming im.
And put some fucking pants on dude.

See if you can find the yamaha part number on the instrument cluster, the first 3 characters should tell you what model it's from, then go googling for wiring diagrams to see which wire joins to which using whatever connectors you can get your hands on.
I'd be looking at how many of the wires are the same colour on the different connectors, and then what's left over after that.

Yep all seems pretty trivial, shame you're not in Christchurch.

The key goes into its home at the top of the suspension and the cluster is separate, bike has been riding without gauges.
I will get a led and test all those wires with the bike on and should get a good idea from there thanks for the help!
Also, the climate in Dunedin rarely allows for pants
