LOL...25 fps, with a 640 x 480 resolution!..yeah...they are gonna work out GREAT when the action starts.

Just google the reviews on these things, poor video, static pic's and sound...but it has front facing screen!!...hence our Govt has just gone with what the Yanks & Poms are using, while ignoring the fact that the actual footage!...is shit!

FFS...what a rip off!, give em the good gear!...the jobs hard enough without relying on poor footage to back you up.

You could buy 3 GoPros with that money and still get some change left.

The article doesn't say that our police are getting these cameras, or any cameras. It just says that Judith Collins was impressed with how the cameras worked overseas.

Cameras for polis are a good idea

Rialto's randomised controlled study has seized attention because it offers scientific – and encouraging – findings: after cameras were introduced in February 2012, public complaints against officers plunged 88% compared with the previous 12 months. Officers' use of force fell by 60%.

"When you know you're being watched you behave a little better. That's just human nature," said Farrar. "As an officer you act a bit more professional, follow the rules a bit better."

Video clips provided by the department showed dramatic chases on foot – you can hear the officer panting – and by car that ended with arrests, and without injury. Complaints often stemmed not from operational issues but "officers' mouths", said the chief. "With a camera they are more conscious of how they speak and how they treat people."

But, for gods sake get them decent gear!

The Dept of Corrections has them on trial at two prisons already.

yep this ^
We might see less corruption from NZ's biggest gang (it's amazing how many of them suddenly "change their tune" once you show them the camera you're wearing) But get decent cameras. Even getting a custom mil spec housing for & w/ a GoPro is probably cheaper than this shit & WAY better quality too

Im all for it, provided that any person arrested, charged, or accused of anything gets to see and analyse any footage relating to their matter if any charges are laid or any court action is likely.

Wouldn't be keen on the footage being treated as privileged to police eyes only, unless THEY want to choose a snippet to share. if theyre gonna wear them, I have no issue, provided footage is available when it relates to you in some way.

Sounds like a great idea. Just need to dish out more tickets to pay for them. There are heaps of body mounted cameras in use by Police overseas and they are HD/Night vision capable too.
Go Pros would be arse....need something better than 2hrs of battery.

Doesn't the prosecution has an obligation to hand over any and all evidence that they'll rely on in court to the defence? Doesn't mean they won't doctor it first though.

I was given a recording of the Auckland popo comms radio channel that related to a court case I was involved in a few years ago following an explicit request for the same through the disclosure rules. I doubt the recording would have been used in the prosecution case at all but it was available none the less, therefore I think they had to supply it. That recording was crucial to my success in beating the charge. I'd imagine the same rules would have to apply to a video recording, unless of course National slipped a sneaky law change through the night before announcing a $500 million Waitangi settlement or summat, but they wouldn't do that eh?

And might see some better behavior from the scum they have to deal with, but i doubt it.

No, I wasn't. It was a bullshit charge and I beat them with nothing more than a transcript of their own communications.

yes. . . BUT

if they chose NOT to use a particular bit of evidence themselves, they dont have to give it to you.
Im sure i don't need to explain why that could fast become problematic . . .

I think David Bains lawyer could expand on that point, as could a number of other high profile case lawyers.

yup. which would be my issue. hey, assuming the lads are out there doing their job honestly, there's no reason to oppose free access to footage.
realistically, the guys knowing they have a camera on them is probably going to increase the quality of the job they do, and theyll be extra carefull to mae sure they do it all by the book - certainly has potential to be a win win for everyone if it's done right.

Those units looked designed for the job though, low profile and prob ip67 or something rated etc and prob able to be operated while wearing gloves.
Quality is not important if the offender is already identified by witness/cop, the vid is just to document actions/attitude.
Would you want to rolling around on the ground trying to wrestle someone with a stickyout gopro on your body???
Also smaller files are easier/faster to download and forward, trying editing an original HD video file without a decent computer...
Something like this should be always on though, not selective snippets.
What might be important is how they handle the transistions from light to dark, that gives a lot of vid gear problems...
