Triumph Sprint overheat?

just got a 2006 Sprint with 70K on the clock

is it supposed to feel like your lower legs are about to melt off? I know it has under-seat pipes but the heat is from behind the knees/calves.
shop guy said 'its normal' (also with a shrug... not convincing)
engine heat gauge says its ok.

obviously don't notice on oepn road at speed but as soon as hit a 50km/hr area start to feel it.


anyone have experience of this/the Sprint ST? just so's i don't disappear down Paekak Hill in a ball of flame (although that in itself sounds cool :rolleyes:)

Yes - it's usual (note I didn't say normal). Apart from the under seat exhaust (mistake of choosing form over function) causing some heat I suppose - a lot comes from the engine back onto the legs, but only at townie pace. You should note also the temp bars showing on the gauge climb to 6-7 when in town - so not only does the slower pace give you more of the normal output heat - the bike is also generating more heat in inner city! I had an ST955 with a low exhaust - and got warm legs on that. I now have a GT1050 - again low exhaust mount - and warm leg symptoms are there still -but less. While in Welly on Friday - on the way to Motorad - I spent 10+ mins navigating the traffic snarls with a pillion on back - the motor was good and hot and 7 bars on the temp gauge. I didn't feel it much on the legs - but maybe they are so well cooked they have lost sensitivity.

These are excellent machines though -and if yours was well treated - at 70k - she'll go for many more. A lot of the US and UK owners are getting 100k+ MILES and still going... The 1050 triple motor was reported in some news rag or another as the best motorcycle engine of the last whatever period...decade maybe....and I think it is too.

Wellington traffic is a pain but also satisfying to negotiate amidst fuming drivers.

Friend of mine had a Triumph Tiger that randomly had cooling issues from new.. can't quite remember what it was but it maybe worth looking to see if there is any cooling recalls on the bikes?

Have you tried filling the radiator's header tank with coolant I have found that water and glycol is quite good for cooling a bike that is overheating

No - they all seem to do it. I sit still and it heats up pretty quick and you can feel it. Never been an issue and its certainly not the only fully faired bike to do it...

My Speed Triple temp gauge goes up a few notches when riding around town ... I figure it is alot like me, hates riding around munters.

Riding mine has certainly caused me to sweat a few times...

Nice bike though... I really tried hard not to like it but its definately growing on me..

Yeah, i'm forever looking over the fence at other bikes, then i ride the sprint and remember why I have it.. :2thumbsup
