Just as the Catholic church clung to the belief that the Earth was at the centre of the universe, I'm wonder do Aucklanders believe their city is the centre of New Zealand :spudwhat:
No offence Aucklanders, I'm sure you've a fine city there which I'm only too keen to visit, to see some friends, the sites ...and then leave. But I've had two unrelated replys where I emailed a person in Auckland as I had a personal contact rather than a blind contact in Christchurch, and both times, almost verbatim, the reply was "..our contact in Chch is XXX, but opportunities in Chch are limited and all the work is in Auckland".
I wondered if you might like to share the pro's and con's of being in or outside Auckland :devil2:

The assumption of many Dorkland businesses that you are in their area code, even when they've just phoned you and know you're not: "Our number is xxx-xxxx" Hey, how about specifing that I have to dial "09" first, dickhead?
Or maybe they just assume everyone knows where they are.
I'm in the 07 area, I regularly deal with companies in the 03, 04, 06 and 09 areas in addition to local businesses. It gets annoying when I have to try to guess whether its a Jafa or a local (03, 04 and 06 people always give their area code because they know there are other places outside their areas)

SWMBO and I would love to live outside of Auckland (and would prefer Chch), but at the moment, we have to stay where the work is. The good news is that with the work I do, telecommuting is possible for 1 or 2 days a week, and one day I might be able to convice the powers that be that 5 days a week is not only possible, but will be more practical too as they wont have to pay for floorspace!!
Either that or a good Lotto win. :hbd:

yes it is.. it's south Auckland, and just runs to south-south Auckland..
there's some good roads that go from north Auckland, right up to north-north-north Auckland..
but a lot of NZers want the JAFAs to go west-west-west or east-east-east auckland off an east/west pier me thinks

Let us remember at this point that there are many in this city who are Auckland residents rather than citizens. (to borrow immigration parlance)
My perspective as an ingrained Dunno's boy living in Waitakere, is that there are many things to commend the city...and many to condemn it...
Auckland is a city that would IMHO (hypothetically at least) be closer to perfection with 1/4 the population, and more so with 1/8th of the cars!
The traffic is as bad as everyone says...but oh, those west coast beaches  [not technically in Auckland I know, but neither am I when I'm at home]
There does appear to be a veneer of arrogance in certain sectors of society here, more so than in Dunedin - but even Dunnos has its wan*ers!
It seems a tough call to put all of greater Auckland in one basket, as its pretty geographically and culturally...um...big.
The positives here have certainly toned down some of the stereotypes I held prior to coming here...but the blardy traffic...that ain't no stereotype, its a cun*y fact of life here.
Enjoy those free-flowing roads...those of you lucky enough to be in the rest of our beautiful country at least!

I've never been to Auckland (other than the airport), and after living in the UK for most of my life it certainly wasn't high on my list of places to live when I moved to NZ. The reason being that I left the UK to get away from the traffic, the crime, and the impersonal attitude of people on the street, and Auckland sounds too much like home, apart from the weather being better. But as I’ve said – I’ve never been there, so I base my statements on hear say, news reports and the tinternet. I’m sure the locals may tell a different story, and I look forward to going there one day and being made to eat my words.
I live in Christchurch. A small city, particularly by UK standards. No traffic problems to speak of, low crime rate (in comparison to UK cities and Auckland), very friendly people, and beautiful scenery on our doorstep. Plenty of jobs here to, depending on your vocation.
if you need a chat/advice re' immigration or ChCh in general - feel free to PM me.

It's the work that keeps us all here of course.I've had jobs lined up several times in other locations - but finding a place to live, selling up,shifting,it's all too much to put together at one time. It'd be alright if you had enough money to survive while you do the whole moving house finding drama. The trouble is in a smaller location, like I was in last time - the employment oportunities are limited, and if you use them all up,you either work outside your area or move again.
With my latest move out of Auckland I am able to still work here, but am in a town with some employment oportunities,or I can work in Hamilton too.No way am I gunna work again for a prick who looks at me smuggly with a ''where are you going to work if you walk out'' look on his face.I hate to be tied down, but being tied down in Auckland gives you room to move.None of that made sense, but neither does living in Auckland.

i've managed to leave Auckland and couple of times, i went North to Dargaville, its the scariest place on the planet, theres more pubs and liquer outlets then people (who have between 6 and 8 toes on each foot, bad hair, no dress sense and they all love each other the wrong way!!!). I tried to run but i ended up getting brutally man poked for 3 weeks straight by every man woman and thing in Dargaville. Upon recovery and many many hours of therapy, i ventured south to go snow boarding at the mountain thingy..... once up the mountain, i saw the Dargaville family which bought back some bad memories..... but i remembered to think of fairys and count to 12.6 and carry on...... thankfully my car got knicked from the car park........ at the top of the mountain thingy, which ment a bloody long wait for a bloody exspensive cab down........... Auckland is not perfect, but at least were not all related........

Born in Wellington, visit the place multiple times per year. Shifted to Auckland, never moving back. Wellington has nothing I want apart from a few mates and family (but most of that is up here these days).
I'd have real trouble shifting off the North Shore, in contrast to Wellington it has everything I want.
Couldnt do Christchurch either, mainly because of my lungs/sinuses. When I dont have to work anymore, I'll be heading for a place the same things as I get on the shore, but without the city part.

Add a slice of lemon and a tiny parasol and you can charge 12 bucks for it at the bar of your choice...
..well, you can in Auckland, where a pissy-little cup of filter coffee can cost three bucks.

I just had a call from a woman I need to interview for an article I'm writing. She told me to call her at 10am tomorrow and just listed the number with no area code - you guessed it, she was from Auckland! I'll cut her a little slack though because she was ringing me on my mobile so she may have assumed I was a Dorklander too!

Well there's only 7 cities better than us here in Auckland, and unless you speak German or French five of the others aren't so great.
Most of the work is in Auckland because that's where the greatest percentage of people are. And the greatest percentage of people are in Auckland because that's where the jobs are.
The major con to Auckland is that it is pretty much impossible to survive without your own transport. It's far too big to walk to most places, and bicycles aren't very useful for moving stuff. Most of my trips are either 25km or 10km, and that's just not feasible without powered transport.

I've gotta say, I don't know what all the fuss is about. I've lived everywhere except Auckland untill now. Everyone said "Don't go there! It's a shithole! Traffic's a cunt! Everybody's a wanker!"
I listened to my instincts and told them to get fucked and moved anyway. My impressions are this. The distances and travelling times are longer. Big deal. The motorcycling is better. More bikers, better roads, more variety. I've been offered jobs and assistance by people who have never met me before. I took a gamble which never paid off, made a phone call yesterday, was employed today. It's never cold. (I mean really cold)
I love the place and have met people who I now consider good mates. But then, I'm a wanker now too. :motu:

Christchurch=Less traffic, less people, easier to get out of the city and onto decent roads, handy to beaches, rivers and ski fields, better race track( Puke is a shithole) lower cost of living (although wages/salary possibly lower as well).
I've stayed in Auckland a few time and my main impression was that everyone was in to much of a hurry, the further South you get the slower the pace of life seems to be

I think I have the answer to this question...
JAFA's APPEAR to be geocentric simply because the world actually revolves around me - and I am IN Auckland.
It used to revolve around Taranaki, then Palmerston North, and now Auckland.
I get to the US from time to time too... and you may have noticed them hit the news at about that time.
Hope this helps?

That's the attitude I've experienced throughout my whole life living in Auckland. There's plenty of drongo's living up here as there are in the town you live in, you can't make a general comment though and say "most/all" Aucklanders are dork's as you are inferring. Come and work & live here for a long period of time and make up your own mind, never mind listening to the scorners.
