You have free speech, but to say you are going to kill someone will warrant the police looking into you.
Personally I say good thing they are banned. They don't even make music. Abusing police, audience members etc verbally and encouraging/telling people to perform physical abuse publicly is a bit daft.

They'd be fuckin busy if that were the case...and given that the "music" is public domain wouldn't you think it odd that they'd announce their intentions before killing said person? Bit like signing a confession.
(C)rap and abusive, disparaging, racial blah blah blah music has been around for decades. Wonder why they're getting so pissy about it now? Oh yeah, coz it corrupts people's minds as they can't think for themselves :killingme. I bet "they" hate it when their own weapons are used against them. Alas, "they" are permitted to say and do what they like.

Agreed. It's pretty petty banning them and also really disappointing for all the wigga kids that bought tickets to the gig.
Not my kind of 'music' either but I can totally appreciate that a lot of people don't think metal is music (even though it fucking rocks). If it was a band I liked and I'd bought tickets to see them I'd be gutted that people's narrow-mindedness is getting in the way.

Cannibal corpse has derogatory and abusive lyrics, but they don't tell the crowd to riot or tell people to abuse people. There's a not so fine line between singing about a rancid amputation and telling people to smack a cop over.
Sublime have a song called date rape. The lyrics say "if it wasn't for date rape I'd never get laid". That's all fine to say and sing. But to say "you should go and date rape people if you want to get laid" is wrong (not to mention, it doesn't work in the song).

I agree with your sentiments - but to the Mothers Brigades who typically spearhead this kind of ban, the difference in semantics is lost.
Also, Cannibal Corpse lyrics are amazing

Not really sure about the twitterz thing but unless you were actually there who knows what happened with that riot thing. Has no one learnt NOT to trust the media yet? Who is to say the Police didn't go in and start whacking the crap out of people to get them to move on?
Oh wait, it is America, the cops are pretty relaxed there aye
Not defending them (they seem like tards IMO, but I doubt they'd think much of me either so who cares), however it does all seem a bit over the top.

Personally, I think they're shit, but, there's a principle at stake here
I/S has a good take on it...
Yesterday the Auckland Council started wringing its hands (http://www.radionz.co.nz/news/national/235987/council-moves-to-pull-rap-group) over misogynist rap group Odd Future's planned concert this weekend. Today, the government has responded by banning them from New Zealand (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/news/article.cfm?c_id=1501119&objectid=11201621). Their reason?
"The Immigration Act 2009 provides that entry permission may not be granted where there is reason to believe there is, or is likely to be, a threat or risk to public order or the public interest.
"Odd Future has been deemed to be a potential threat to public order and the public interest for several reasons, including incidents at past performances in which they have incited violence. In one instance, a police officer was hospitalised following a riot incited by Odd Future,'' the statement read.
That riot? Was caused by cops when they broken up a signing when too many fans showed up (http://www.stereogum.com/704911/local-news-reports-on-riot-at-odd-futures-boston-in-store/video/). And the injury was a cop falling over and hurting his back. From the sound of them, I wouldn't like Odd Future at all - but as a "threat to public order" goes, that's exceptionally weak, and certainly no grounds to violate their freedom of expression (http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/1990/0109/latest/DLM225513.html), or that of their New Zealand fans. This ban is simply Muldoonist bullshit.
(I'd suggest Odd Future seek to have the ban judicially reviewed for illegality, but it would take too long, the harm will already have been done, and those who made the decision will not go to jail for BORA violation. Which is one way governments get away with unlawful actions: because they effectively have impunity from any consequences)
As for how to deal with groups like Odd Future, I've said it before (http://norightturn.blogspot.co.nz/2004/07/david-irving-and-freedom-of-speech.html) and I'll say it again: the answer to speech you don't like is more speech, not less (http://norightturn.blogspot.co.nz/2013/03/confronting-nazis-in-christchurch.html).

Well that's simply not right. It shows what a sophomoric understanding you have of rights. You don't have the right to yell "fire" in a crowded theatre. You don't have the right to defame someone by telling public lies about them. Free speech isn't unlimited.
Besides which, the one thing you haven't gotten through your head is that there are no rights to infringe upon. They are not NZ citizens, they aren't even in this country. They would have been visitors to NZ, and we absolutely have the right as a nation to turn away people that we don't want here. They are an undesirable lot and our nation has no interest in letting them in the borders.
That's not the same as censorship, and again the fact you're confounding these issues shows what a juvenile mind you have.

I've always believed ... free means already paid for.
With some additional (hidden) costs sometimes required ...
So what's free speech? Oh, right, we're back to paying for a permit again... which would mean that there is no free speech unless you have paid for it and have a license to dispense it. Then again, if you can't incite a riot and there are caveats to the content that you're allowed to use, then it ain't really free innit.

I'm rich in comparison to a poor person and my Wife is Scottish. Needless to say the money that comes in goes straight out again or at least is distributed amongst the females of the household which leaves me with enough for beer tokens and bait... :killingme you ain't the only one that keeps forgetting.

The Sublime song "Date Rape' then goes on to tell the story of the guy who was the rapist going to jail and getting arse fucked daily - great song!
I went to Eminem last night and cant say these guys were missed at all ..... then again, I was only there for Eminem & felt old as fuck :motu:

The singer is half African American I think mate.
Given that most of their music is about racism and inequality, does it really matter what colour they are?

Music doesn't make people behave badly. If they do, then we have insufficient legal ways of dealing with it.
I've seen plenty of mosh pits where the music makes people behave very badly indeed !!!

The music was playing while some dumb cunts were shoving and punching each other. It is not the fault of the music.

The thing that got me was that they already had the visas to enter. Then they were refused near enough to when they were about to fly over.
So either the border security process for vetting incoming people is shite, or can be easily manipulated by political pressure groups after approval has been given. There is no truth to the rumour that I kicked my son out of our house for playing rap all the time and having posters of Eminem all over his walls. I will have to be watchful if his girlfriend gets pregnant though.
