Not to hijack this , it's a closely related subject: who knows if it is legal to trim the edges off their number plate? I saw a bike the other day (Hayabusa IIRC) and he had reduced the overall size of the plate by ....at a very rough guess... a couple of cms in length and a cm in height. The numbers were still the same size of course, and it looked very very neat and tidy, a surprisingly good look I thought. Might do it myself if it not gunna cause problems with WOFs

Kerry, i've done this to my plate, just used tin snips and cut round the edges of the plate, mainly cause it fell off (really it did) and got caught in the rear wheel and swingarm brace, it's small and my ones so filthy you cant read it, and plus i cant be arsed doing runners all the time by not using a plate at all, some rides it comes off though.
But in terms of legitmicy i'm pretty sure you're not allowed to modifie the plate in any way, when i get told off i'll get a new one, if they catch me that is

Nope, not legal. As explained to me by an Officer of the law who was a bit bored.
Never got a ticket for it in 4 or 5 years though.

mine (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=14555).Damn, I love my bike..
I've seen/know people who have their plate right down near the rear shock, shagged ta hell. Also know people that have lost their plate *ahem*, and have scrap sprayed up it *ahem* or have been scrubbing too hard that the black paint of the numbers and letters have gone *ahem*.. more trouble than they're worth, those damn plates.. it's tagging people, that's what it is..

Also know people that have lost their plate *ahem*Yeah, in the great tradition of "I'll say it was my mate so that I can avoid responsibility for admitting that I might just be a little closer to this story than I'm letting on"...
I've got a mate who is currently running their fairly quick sportsbike with no plate. And in the last few days has had occasion to up the ante on 4 occasions to avoid unwanted taxation. Admittedly 2 of 4 were kinda in the "asking for it" category - in fact "begging" was more like it. But my mate has decided that the rising fuel consumption, combined with the riskier maneouvres that seem to become more frequent with the lack of accountability that running no plate provides, it seems sensible that my mate goes home tonight and reattachs the plate... and continues to work on the tilting mechanism :Punk:
My mate assures me that runners are great fun if you're in the mood, but damn inconvenient if you're not.

Funkyfly has a fucken good plate setup on his Gixxer. Sensei may have a pic. Also, the wicked quick guy from the Litre Crew (you know who I mean) has a good one too if I remember rightly. I wasn't paying too much attention, just trying to stay on the road chasing him.

Every Sportsbike I saw in the States recently had the plates stuck up by the rear shock, looks cool as, just have to ensures its visible.
Saw a gixxer last week with the plate mounted on its side on the right swing arm, it didnt make the bike look any better, it looked fucken stupid.

I folded the top and bottom edges of my MX5's front number plate to fit it below the grill, and tilted it 45 degrees.I don't know if this constitutes "trimming"

Mines where it shold be but the last guy that had it cut most of the white off so pretty much just the letters and numbers are left. Doesn't look to bad either. Just got a new warrant from the testing station when I bought it so they didn't have a problem with it.

pretty sure that things like rego being displayed aint part of a warrent of fitness check, that being focussed on safety rather than the other stuff

There were a couple of guys in Tauranga when I lived there who had hinged plates complete with cable-operated knobs under the side of the seat that miraculously folded the plate up when going past speed cameras, revenuers, and other nosey people.

But what do you do, like on the m/way when a cop is behind you and the plate is "blowing in the wind"
either way its clever though-- :motu:

I checked the regulations reagarding rego plates (what a pharking drama that was!) but my browser crashed when I was trying to post them.
Basically, I couldn't find anything about the legality of tampering with the plate (cutting it and the like), but I'm sure it's a no-no. The regs basically say that the plate has to be visible from 20m in the dark, so it has to be adequately illuminated. It also has to be clearly visible from the rear or at an angle to the rear. You are also not allowed to obscure it, or make it look as though you have a legal plate when you in fact don't.
Any monkey business may result in a fine not exceeding $500.
I think there is some leniency allowed, f'rinstance sprotscars with painted-on front plates are illegal, yet this is routinely overlooked, probably because the rear plate matches the one painted on the front. Similarly, I'd imagine that as long as a bike plate was clearly visible, if it had been trimmed slightly it would be overlooked because if you were pulled up they could match it with the registration slip.
