Going to make buying his next pair of shoes expensive. One pair size 9's. One pair size 8's. just to get a left and a right shoe that fits. ;)
As for the picture, I have seen degloving injuries that have shredded the soft tissue as bad as this. I got called out to a chap who had his left hand go through a thicknesser. Not very pleasant.

The worst ones are usually the flip flop riders from Brazil, or other poor countries where the climate is hot and small, air cooled motorbikes rule the streets. Now those videos are a perfect example of why ATGATT is so important, even more so than this one!

Nah I think it stupid too. But then again its their skin and choice. I'm always for ATGATT because I'd rather be protected the best I can should the worst happen, I make that choice each time I put on my gear its common sense really, I'd rather have the skin on my ass stay there and not have to have it grafted onto my face.
I make the choice to wear the gear. Just like the ones riding in shorts and stuff make their choice when they just jump on and ride.

Most ankle injury's are broken bones right where the top of the boot ends or the ankle joint if the leg can twist in the boot.
So put your boot on and twist your leg, if you can, even a little bit this will be where the week point is.
If it doesn't then it might break at the top of the boot. if it is too close to the ankle it will be a worse break then if it is higher up the leg.
These are general things as it depends on a lot of variables when/how you come off.
See all you "bad form" critics it has had the desired effect.

Not that reddit is a reliable source or anything, just that the OP has more than the one pic and they say forklift. Still, tennis shoes probably arent going to do much for your feet in a crash anyway.

It certainly can be, and has been done successfully. There was one where a piano wire or other such material was placed at around head height across the road (what kind of asshole does that?!).
Jerry did it.
"The Jerries were known to string tough piano wires neck-high across the roads that Allied Jeeps traveled on. The steel tension wire provided a nasty way to lop off the heads of Jeep drivers and passengers. Often the wire couldn't be seen or if seen, it was usually to late to stop in time. The GI's answer for this booby-trap was the Anti-Decapitation Device, field made angle iron bolted upright to the front bumper. The device extended above the the heads of those riding in the Jeep, and at the top it is angled forward and usually notched to catch and cut the wire"

Nah I didn't get pics, but I looked into what was left of his knee before they took him into surgery. Scapula smashed away. missing the bottom inch of his femur.
The nurse took pics as it was a good teaching case!
He contracted Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus in the hospital. MRSA is the anti-biotic resistant bug that eats flesh and sticks to metal - which was the only thing holding his leg together.
6 months later he got out of hospital. can't ride anymore.

Yea, caused by a forklift. Although you might get similar results from riding without boots, I wouldn't expect quite as extreme de-gloving.
Kind of like when the Police used the video of that woman pulling not quite in front of the truck as an attempt to scapegoat the truck driver for txting. Despite no mention of a phone in any of the original incident reports, and the woman driving the car being convicted of dangerous driving.
