View Full Version : Degreasing bike?

Since I have the fuel tank off my bike, is it a good idea to spray some of that Supercheap degreaser in a can over the engine and on other dirty places around the bike? I just want to make sure that it's going to play nice with all the rubber components like fuel hoses and shit.

use brakleen.

You don't use brakleen around old tired rubber mate. It helps dry it out and will eventually make it crack and shit.
Degreaser will make a hell of a mess but it does work, a blow gun is good for removing the chain sludge round the front sprocket. Just scrape all the big bits off first because it will go flying everywhere.

agreed, Brakleen is a bit on the toxic side for that sort of thing. Engine degreaser or Simple Green is good too. Puts a bit of shine to it. Steam clean to finish off usually does the trick just nice.:headbang:

Yeah, spray it all around your swingarm bushes and wheel bearings too.

Hot and soapy water ... with plenty of detergent ... with a warm engine.

Do it on the lawn and the grass wont die (The neighbors lawn is a better place to do it).

The spray on stuff is messy and expensive.

From the smell of it the Supercheap degreaser is mostly diesel. I use it cos its cheap, and rinse of with water hose after. Hasn't damaged any plastic or rubber fittings so far

Kerosene is cheaper, and does a much better job. And it wont fuck ya rubber, so you can use it as a lube when your fucking your sister. :motu:

Yep, kero and a petrol brush FTW.

Go on Akzle, nothing gives a better weld than a joint cleaned with brakleen, give it a go.

Keeping you off the road and heading for an early grave-Priceless-best value ever for my tax dollar. If you need a reference for your case manager about your inability to find work, just drop me a line: happy to help.

I've been using Simple Green as my degreaser/cleaner for my drivetrain, it works good and is cheap and easy to find.

Fuck me do not use oven cleaner on your bike Smokey. If you want to see why, find an old bike part made from cast aluminium and give it a go. Kero, brush, hose, nothing more expensive or complicated than that.

I bought a white pump spray bottle from Bunnings called "30 second degrease" or similar. About 10 dollars. I was impressed with the result when cleaning my bike yesterday at a DIY station with high pressure hoses. Bike was severely covered in bugs and dirt after 5000km on the south island, and left that way in the garage for two weeks. Soaked the whole bike with the degreaser, let it set for a minute. Rinsed thoroughly with high pressure water. Done! I had brought sponges, brushes and what not, looking forward to a good hour of hard manual cleaning. But no, ended up never using any of it. Just sprayed it down and rinsed it off. :2thumbsup :headbang:

A large vat of MEK is good. We used to use that to clean accounting machines and electric motors in the late 60s. Kills cockroaches a treat as well........
