View Full Version : I have made a big little mistake

Was messing around with spark plugs. Managed to flood the engine. Fuel pouring out of carbs. Plugs wet. Bike won't start. Sounds like an old man coughing.

Besides leaving the plugs out, anything else I can do to undo the flooding? Read a few things like hold a lighter to the cylinder; spray atf through the plug hole; drain headers(?). Not sure hot effective any of that is. Any tips?

Cheers

Wind the engine over with the plugs out.

A BBQ lighter works well in the plug holes, as a normal lighter can burn you slightly. How did you manage to flood it in the first place? Did you replace the spark plugs with new ones? Is the carby leaking from the overflow?

Wind the engine over with the plugs out.

^^ This. And flush the engine oil asap as I'm pretty sure petrol degrades the oil and you'll wear the engine a lot quicker.

Wind the engine over with the plugs out.

Regarding this: Can I hit the starter with the plugs out? I've been told it messes up the secondary coil if the leads are not earthed.

Put the spark plugs back into the caps and rest the plugs on the motor while winding it over.

And FFS if petrol is still pissing out of the carbs DON'T do it until you stop the petrol pissing out...

If the engines flooded it shouldn't piss out of the carbs, thats not flooded, its drowned and it shouldnt happen. Also do it outside in the drive well away from things like say your garage or house... Just in case. In case you had not noticed petrol burns really well...

The engine isn't going to run if there's no petrol and fire.

Upon further inspection, fuel was leaking from the t joint connecting the fuel hose. Engine starts and runs fine now after new plugs. Once I get the leaky hose sorted, time for the warrant and open road! Almost.

Good man - motorcycles burn amazingly well once they get started...

Bore washing will happen straight away if you flood it enough.
