View Full Version : GSXR 250R change of plans

Ok so I am not going to do any major changes to the bike. Will run it in and learn to ride whilst saving for a bigger GSXR. Thinking a 600 would be about right for me.

I do have to make some changes though as the exhaust is starting to leak a little, yes I could weld it up and keep going til it dies but would like to look at my options. Quandry is getting a stock exhaust nowadays seems to be a bit tough so I am wondering if a custom job would be a good idea. Basically I can get a better exhaust note at the same time. Does anyone have someone in mind in the Bay of Plenty area that could do this work and knows what they are doing?

Also the local Suzuki dealer tells me that I wouldn't need to change any of the carb jets if I put a cone filter on (again just for sound). Is this true? The engine being fairly highly tuned already and probably runs close to lean so I am really not sure as the guy at the shop hadn't even heard of this model.

So to put it in a nutshell:
1: Custom exhaust for better pitch and note. Y/N
2: Cone Filter for a bit more sound when it screams. Y/N
3: If I do the above will I need to Rejet the Carbs (Mikuni BSW 27mm)

Thanks for your patience all.

exhaust for powa. Not noise.
Ie, harleys make lots of noise, but are fucking gay.

Cone tip? No, theyre gay like harleys.

Tune the carbs?
Yes! Every other week! You want to be tweaking that shit harder than a german girl's nipples! Once your bike is at maximum thrust, rebore it 90 thou over and start again!

Ok so it is kinda noise I said but I am actually more interested in a better note to the exhaust, not greater noise. More akin to the sound of a Alfa Romeo vs the Holden V8 really. I am not interested in tuning it every other day but just wanted a Yes or No as to whether it should be done or just drive it after the change til it blows up :shit: Cone filter was what the guy at the bike shop suggested, really I haven't got a clue and this is probably obvious by my dumb ass questions and asking for advice on stupid little things. Still an answer would be good no matter how imbecilic you think I am being. :bleh:

Fix the stock exhaust. Building an exhaust is expensive. I'm not sure how it goes for four strokes, but any change to the intake or exhaust will likely require a rejet. If this is a throw around bike, don't waste your time or money on building a new pipe...

Awesome will get it fixed. Thanks.

Solution:

Brought a GSXR 1000. Problem solved.

Had to laugh though as I was reading through trademe:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-559174994.htm

Should be a good sale (not sure who would pay it).

Thanks for the help.

That auction has been continuously relisted for at least a year and a half, I think the guy actually thinks he can get more than 2.5 grand for a gsxr250

Someone was wrecking a few gsxr250s on TM a while ago, I bought some parts off him when I was into those bikes..nice guy. I'm sure an exhaust will pop up that will suit your needs.

On the subject of trying to get a different exhaust note, what's wrong with the stock sound?? They sound crazy! Also they're so highly tuned you wont have much luck squeezing more power out without reducing it's lifespan (as previously stated). Just ride the dam thing and have fun ripping it up at 17000rpm! :scooter:

Where exactly is the exhaust leaking from? It's probably best to get the leak fixed, then see if you can drill out the muffler. Go on a gixxer forum where other members have the 250 version and ask them if there's an easy way to drill out the exhaust. Otherwise get an aftermarket end can welded/bolted up to the stock exhaust.

Leave the airbox in there in a stock condition and use a direct drop in replacement air filter. Don't fuck with the air box or put in a non standard type air filter (unless it's a drop in replacement) or you'll make it run like shit. Don't put a cone air filter in there.

If you drill out the exhaust slightly, then leave the stock jetting in there. If you get an aftermarket end can, go up a size on the jets. Speak to an experienced bike mechanic who knows a fair bit about bike carbies, not some "mechanic" who doesn't know fuck all about setting up carbs. It's VERY easy to make a carbied bike, especially a 4 cylinder run like shit if you don't know what you're doing.

Why are you intent on wasting more money?

I'm not. Have sourced another muffler which should do the job (apparently no leaks etc) Will go for upgrade of the filter in the airbox, sounds like the best plan. As to tuning maybe if I keep stock muffler and filter only changed slightly it won't need rejetting but will cross that bridge later.

As to more power. YES. I have more power now in the magnificent form of a GSXR 1000. Luckily I have about 8 weeks to learn to ride before it arrives but then it should cure all my ill gotten yearnings for a fast 250.

Because I'm such a nice guy, I'll pay your life insurance premiums once you get the 1000.

By the sounds of it you won't have to pay much, think it might be out of my ability even then so will park it up for a while and do these pro-rider courses everyone has suggested. That way i am less likely to crash out in unimpressive style.

Thanks for the offer though...

I'll get you to take out life insurance on me first, that way you can get paid out at the same time... Should be enough for a few beers while you watch the reruns..

Get yourself a GoPro (or similar) and film yourself doing some 250kmh+ lane splitting on Auckland motorways, just like GhostRider. Bonus points if you do it high on meth.

Double extra bonus points if you do it while high on meths

Do I get extra points for drinking it, pouring it in the tank and running it hard...

Anyway going to do the Silver Prorider and wait 6-9 months on the 250 before I think on riding the other. Hopefully find a bit of track time to hone the skills (if I have them) as well.

If you really purchased a gsxr1000 I doubt it will stay in the garage for a week let alone 6 months.

The Little Gixxer

I have 6 weeks before it arrives, let alone get in vinned and regoed. So yes it will be more than a week at least in that time I will do what I can. We shall see how much I get done. True it may be less than the 6 months but at least I can do the courses before then.

Quick question:

Some guy at the petrol station told me the valves at the top of my front forks are for adjusting my fork pressure to stop nose diving I assume this is when you pull too hard on the front brakes or something like that). Is this true? If so are the air pumpable as he said and what would you do with them ie pressure settings etc...

I'd be very worried if your forks didn't dive under braking, as it's what they're designed to do. Most bikes have adjustable forks, but it's not something that you should be fucking around with. Find someone who knows what they're doing, and get them to set it up for you.

My forks work fine and unless I was going on to a track I very much doubt they need any work done to them. That answers my question though.
