Mstrs has decided that its time I got off the pillion seat and on to my own bike- the rising cost of filling the V6 cage for the daily commute (about 8ks round trip) is certainly influencing his thinking there. I have to confess to having a few nerves about it -don't want teenage son laughing at me for a start- and I haven't ridden for about 15 years and then I only rode infrequently for about a year. He is looking at a Kawasaki Eliminator 250 inline twin. Reason being low seat height and general ease of riding for a rusty old nana like me. Whaddya all think? Is that the best option or should i be looking at something else?

Sounds good to me, but I'm not the best person to answer this question, no doubt the experts will soon be telling you what's the best. But soon enough your confidence will return in full force and you'll be after something a bit bigger, maybe, who knows. Good luck anyway.

Did think that if my confidence returned in bucket loads (I wish!) it wouldn't matter as yungun is 14 and 1/2 and i will be able to hand it on down to him in a few months

Eliminators are fucken cool. But get a 900 or the extra rare 1000cc. Oh whoops, you're not allowed.

And tell the boy if he laughs, we'll make public his interesting night spent with Deano, Hayden and the fish.

Ummmm, dude. We've got fish. There was a tank full of the critters right outside your room.

Quite frankly, I'd be more concerned about Deano. Did you see the state of the wheels that guy's got?

Buy a Virago 250 cruiser.... they are real cool to ride....

I rode mine from Ak to Hastings on a friday at the end of April....
and rode it back up to Auckland on the Sunday....
Mine went real great.................

They are also great for around town as well....
Great machines to learn on... easy to handle....

Had mine for just over 5 years and love to ride my bike.

To get this thread back on line.....I thought that a cruiser-style bike would be best for my dear one & the Eliminator just sort of raised it's head & waved at me. I know little about them but what I have read sounds OK.

Try a GN125, a gental cruzer, cheap on gas, easy to handel and with the right rider apparently faster than a CBR250RR

Riding my bike to work I was amazed at just how many teachers used to ride. As soon as they see my helmet I get the "Back in my younger days...........". Also like answering the stupid questions the students come up with, Most popular seems to be "Will it beat my cousins evo?" tis amazing how many have cousins with evo's.

Nothing like a bit of test piloting to figure out what you want. I spent quite some time trying out all of what was on offer before I continued on with getting what I wanted any way. :devil2:

One of my riding partners wives has gone through the same dilemma over the last 18 months. She chose a Suzuki GN 250 and was very pleased with the choice (light, cheap, low seat height etc). Must admit that the first few months were quite funny as she built confidence, poodiling along at 50-80 km/hr followed faithfully by her husband on his Hayabusa, grinding his teeth in frustration  . Mstrs may well be the same, so will probably need a slap from time to time, hehe. She's now passed her test and is looking at a Buell.

Another friend's wife has the Honda 250 (VT250 Spada). That is a little honey of a bike - fast, light, nice all round. Bit more expensive than a GN, but a bike capable of covering distances at a good pace. This would be my small bike of choice.

Good luck with whatever you choose!

I didn't start riding until my late 30s and I'd never ridden a bike before that, so you should be fine! If you had ridden in the past, it will come back to you and within a few weeks you shouldn't have any problems.

I'm certainly glad we've got bikes and also a very economical car, living in the country means walking to the shops is not really an option - about 20kms round trip!

Also glad I work from home - a few toll calls and that's about it for my expenses!

I was looking at a 125 when the gn250 I have now came up and my gn's no racer but 125cc would be annoyingly slow and thirsty on the open road. Go the mighty gn, mine is custom texturised in rust spot brown and I love it. (Until something better comes along).

Get the Eliminator. It's probably a GPX250 motor so'll be bullet proof as long as LooseBruce doesn't go anywhere near it.

Buy it, then post some pics of Yunga' doing a burnout in the garage when you can.

Will do. It can drop a patch too.....did one in the workshop where the bike is at the mo. Purely for research purposes, you understand. :devil2:

That's cool Why is my van in the back ground? If my son is there? He will happily test ride it for you. He might want one. I was going to send you a note to say I know where a Yamaha SR 250 is. Minter but to late. You should have told me and you could have come to lunch today.

One of the guys had one on the last ride I went on. He was a fairly heavy set guy and on anything resembling a hill the best he could get out of it was 90km/h. Looked good and went well otherwise.

Speed is not the important bit for my dear one. Although, the 250 goes quite well really. I'm only a little fella at about 70kg and the bike pulled 130 on the flat without trying & with stale fuel. Not sure that she'll be doing a trackday any time soon tho.

Today was the day!! Yaaay. Took my new bike out for a spin (unregistered and unwarranted-still waiting for the papers). Off to G4E's place first for a couple of runs up and down the front paddock on Xhardcorex's XR200 just to get the feel for it again and then off up the road on the EL, whoohoo. It felt great once I'd got over the real nervous bit. I didn't break any speed records but did stay shiny side up. Still need loads of practice but I know that I can do it now-haven't forgotten everything, even if parts of it are pretty rusty.
