I try to coat the filter with oil but I think Im using to much as the oil drips out the air box and when I checked it today there was a little pool of air cleaner oil under the air cleaner.

How much oil should I use?

foam filter? Instructions on the Castrol can suggest squeezing surplus oil out after applying.

paper filter? shouldn't be using any

So what?
If you just squeeze as much out of the foam as you can with your hands you can't go too far wrong.

K&N? Should not be dripping. Just enough to 'wick' and change colour.

Cool. I was more concerned I could have been choking the motor with to much oil on the filter.

Cheers. Yup I use way more oil than that guy and I wash my filters in petrol. Maybe time to change.

I like to use spray on castrol filter oil, much easier to get an even film without saturating the filter . Pretty sure we don't need to make most bikes ( modern 4 stokes in particular ) run any richer by fully saturating the filter to the point it's dripping.

i use petrol as well, prob not the best but its always handy, make sure there are no gaps in the spread of the oil, and always squeeze the excess out,

I use Motul, it takes at least 24 hours to "cure", but because I'm incredibly organised and on top of everything I'm usually found rushing around the garage the night before the ride trying to clean, dry and oil one of my filters (I have 3, they're always all dirty).

There's usually a pool of filter oil on the tray of my ute under the airbox when I get to my ride.

Is that so when your pulling the bike off the ute, when you grab the front brake to slow the bike it slips and the whole plot falls down on you? :bleh:

How much oil, 50mls is about right[volume of a egg is 50ml/2 ounces] , pour it around the inside of the filter then work it through by squeezing it, don't wring it as the filter will tear. Apply grease to the sealing lip job done.
Always use a top brand Motul, Spectro, Belray, Elf, Rock Oil etc.

Drop some filter oil into a snaplock bag, seal it leaving some air in it. Give it a shake so the oil spreads around the inside surface of the bag then drop the foam filter into it, seal it, shake it around again then squeeze the air out and seal the bag again, knead the oil into the foam through the bag. Ready for next filter change. Have about 2 of them on hand.

Oh FFS dude, if you're going to stand around at the car park out at Woodhill watching me make a dick of myself, at least come and say hi when you've stopped laughing!

I have indeed done exactly that.

That is brilliant. Thanks!

LOL, Ive seen 2 people do that with utes. Laugh then pull the bike off them.

First day I got my first bike which was a XL185s which was a number of decades ago, I got the bike off the trailer and gave it a kick. It started but I managed to kick it into gear with my other leg and rode it into the back of the trailer.

In front of my new girlfriend of the time.

Might as well ask here seeing as its abbout air filters.

On a Uni filter, do I oil both parts of it, or just the inside one? Outside filter feels quite coarse, so dont know if you need oil on it, or if oil from the inside elemnt soak into on there own.

I used to use the spray on types as most where nice an sticky and stayed in/on the filter rather than dripping off. was also good on sandy / dusty tracks for putting a coating on the inside of the air box help trap some of the muck before it got to your airfilter saved changes in the middle of the day.
