In the alternative Waikato ADV rider thread you can discuss anything you like that is vaguely related to riding ADV bikes in the Waikato. There are no rules except the requirement to treat fellow contributers and their opinions with dignity and respect.

Good on ya, but IMHO you guys should have stood the ground and carried on there, probably best to Ignore the constipated Richard head troll in question, I'm from Auckland and have been on more of the recent waikato rides originating from that thread than yours truly so really wouldn't take any notice of his comments.

Will put this thread on my watch list anyway and participate if I have anything to offer :niceone:

It is a hard ask, I'm leaning towards needing 3 bikes to achieve this in regard to ADV riding, but so far that KTM300EXC will have to remain a dream :weep:

PS, A number of bikes saves you having to do tire changes as well as you pick the bike with the right tires for the job at hand, And I'm not keen heavy more powerful bikes running Knobbies

Used one at the Waiouru ride last year.
Very good allrounder, nicest iteration of the F650 donk, but pricey.

Its a hard road to find the perfect bike but they seem close,

Someone mentioned the BMW450X, the yanks rave about them and I near bought one till I read something about the rear air shock or something.

Have Given up on the KTM off road apart from low tide beach and gravel as it keeps trying to spit me off :shit:

I think every one bike owner has the same dilemma thats where my XR is a reasonable for a in the middle bike... just a change of tires get the bling of and its a trail weapon.... change the tires back chuck the bling on and its a gravel weapon.
weapon meaning in the hands of a good rider... not me

All mid sized Adv bikes suffer in comparison to the DR650.
The comments on the TR were along the lines that for that money you could have a DR, a pipe, luggage, big tank and change, lots of change.

That's the sort of wisdom I want to hear...soon as I can get some time away from work, kids and overdue DIY to test ride a couple, there's going to be some big wheels parked next to my scoots.

Yea might just have to save me pennies and have 2 bikes, the WR does most I want just lacks the oomfh out on the road and is possibly a little heavy for a trail bike with under 30 ponies.

It's purely from the money point of view.
A TR or 690 is a far better bike, but for the cost of a new 690, you could nearly get two DR650s.

This, I understand, but as you recommended elsewhere get the dropping it every five minutes out of the way on something cheap-er and light-er. Plus at $7k for a used on, there's money spare for some suspension upgrades a bigger tank and a second set of wheels.

Im about to prep my bike for the weekend; some numpty tightend the shit out of the oil plug before I brought it:pinch:, last change I just had to flip the bike over.... Just went and got some 'bolt extractor sockets', the plan is to put one on a breaker bar and give it hell. :ar15:

Any tips before I do this? Yes I do have a new oil plug since the old one will be destroyed.

Yup, what Oscar said. Get the engine nice and warm, go for 15-30 min ride first, or heat sump plug area with heat gun for 5 mins.
If you really need to use a breaker bar because it's so tight, then you risk stripping the alloy case threads before the steel sump plug ever gets damaged. In which case you'll need a helicoil kit, not a new sump plug.

Heat should do the trick and please use a new crush washer when you re-install sump plug.

You shouldn't have to heat it too much, Ally expands something like 5 times as much as steel per degree.

Ok it is probably about time to post something of a report from a ride around the Waikato here. I have been playing with Google tracks and google maps to see if I can use an android phone as my GPS. Probably can but I haven't had time to have a good play and work out how to make it work.
So attached is the track of my ride today and some stats. Ok I ride like a bit of a nana. Also met a couple of guys at Te Uku doing a recce for the Raglan Adventure ride in a couple of weeks. Te Uku has come a long way - you can get coffee!

Basically went to Waitetuna via
Klondyke Road
Port Waikato/Waikaretu/Waingaro to Te Uku
Did the Waitetuna Valley/Limeworks/Old Mountain Road circut and then back to the big smoke via Ngaruawahia, and up the west side of the river (a slight detour around Hampton Downs) and then back onto the motorway at Pokeno as by this stage it was 4ish and I had promised to be home by 2pm. In between I managed a mercy dash to Raglan as my mother's car had broken down. She seemed more concerned about her bridge game than the car. Gravel is a dissapearing comodity in this part of the world.

I'm so sorry Oscar old buddy, you delicate flower you; I have been completely out of line. For some reason, based on your obnoxious comments and your feeble attempts at keyboard bully boy tactics, here was me thinking that you were the one making trouble!:bleh:

Nope, as usual you missed the point.
Peace had broken out but you went right on being a wanker.

It's a ok bike really, it handles the gravel and stuff ok and holds the road ok as well. It suits me in most respects at the momment as it is a long time since i rode a road bike regularly and I wasn't really sure what I wanted. Still not but I am veering towards the road oriented adv bike vs the more hard core dirt version.

[QUOTE=Keithf;1130690275]Ok it is probably about time to post something of a report from a ride around the Waikato here.

Nice report, I'll have a go with the Whanganui Via Forgotten Highway then, What I will say is that having done the Forgotten Highway several times before and in both direction on the KTM, I did not realize how bad the road is from Taumanui to Whangamoma if your on a road bike, gravel and stone littered corners rock falls and a gravel section of smooth road with a fine gravel sprinkling were you couldn't use the brakes or the throttle with 1000cc and road brakes and tires.
As I said didn't notice on an ADV bike from memory was going up to 90kph faster (on the gravel sections at least)
Still had lots of fun anyway hanging on for grim death at a relative snails pace.

-----------------------------------
Pic's 1623m about 14degC & 2322m 5degC at National Park MT Ruapehui on the way home from Whanganui and you can see the road below snaking its way to the base. one of the best 6ks of road around (when its not covered in snow) you see the bottom in pic 3 and how far in comes up in 4 twising all the way on billard smouth cambered corners

:psst: Nice day and I had little else to do, so I thought I'd do a bit of adv.

Forgot to turn on the tracking thingy so you'll just have to use a map and provided road names If you want to try these roads... They link up pretty easy and were quite bloodly good:woohoo: not far from Hamilton or even Auckland, haven't seen anyone else mentioning them:scratch:

Started the adv from Story road off Tahuna rd, some nice twisty seal in this area thats worth riding too. First 'good' road was Matahuru rd; nice twisty seal soon turns to gravel with just the right amount of sweepers and tight corners:

You come out on to SH27... I headed North to North rd... Not a bad little rd; was very considerate to a guy riding a Horse. From there up to Okaeria rd where I planed to do some riding in Maramarua Forest, no luck; all gates closed... always? Every forest I've been to lately is shut off.

Headed South to Matahuru rd/ vally. Cool road, leads to the start/ end of Hapuakohe walkway (never knew it existed, looks good)

^ Doesn't say no bikes....:devil2:
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2105/13121705573_785600a8b8_c.jpg

South futher to Tahuna rd again, then on to Waiti rd (favorite of thr day) this ones tight and windey gravel then opens up to an awesome view out over the Hauraki Plains.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3720/13120188955_5b92ff8900.jpg

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7425/13120296733_f600a2a9ab_c.jpg

From there along Old Hill Road... Twisty one lane seal... got a bit carried away here, started 'backing it in' to corners Motard style  fun; watch out for the locals who love to cut corners...

Then to Tahuna and Quine rd, more twisties to get carried away with:eek:

Then home James... 200ks and an empty tank.

Was good to get out and explore more of the area near where I grew up, I was surprised I hadn't done all these in the car growing up.

Think this report is long? Wait till I do some real epic shit....:bleh:

Yes work... How I miss it so. I had spinal surgery and had to be in bed for 3 months, hasn't been successful but is ok enough to ride.... I have a very labour intencive job so cant go back to work, in limbo land at the momemt while new scans are done and results come in etc; most likely more surgery then another 3 months in bed... Making the most of my riding time now. Can you believe how slow things move in the medical system? It's going to end up wasting a year of my career.

Thought I'd have another go on Pirongia West Rd. The last time left some 'character' on both sides of the bike and some bloodied and riped jeans:facepalm:

First had to go up Pekanui rd, which is an awasome twistie sealed road in bush. Resently been reseald and hasn't been swept properly ended up having a foot down moment because of grit build ups between tyre tracks.

Pirongia Wests road's surface was the familiar marbles I loathed last time, hasn't been crushed down much over ~6 months; makes for more butt clenching than fun:crazy: :

https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2807/13286219613_822a05cf54.jpg

Some tyre tracks that clear the way a bit but woe be to you if you drift into thre deep stuff:

Was too tired and late in the day to do the other roads there that I planned on doing: Moerangi and Okupata. Another day.

Saw my fair shar of piglets, sheep and goats on Pirongia West rd... Oh to have a portable spit roaster...

Went down Mangiti Rd and Te Akau Warf Rd to look out over Raglan Harbor to Raglan, had a close call with a semi on Mangiti Rd just had enough room to squeeze down the side of it and stay upright:shit:. Mangiti Rd has just had fresh gravel layed on it so it got a bit sketchy with the pressure I had in the tyres, let them down a bit then had me some fun :woohoo:

BY GPS standards...prob 110kph or thereabouts....
I recall seeing from Putaruru to Old Taupo road I was doing 185 kph and slowed down to 48 kph in the space of approx 50 metres...
I knew I had good brakes, but.....? Geez..
It is no wonder we can't find lost aircraft with 'blips' in space from GPS and satellites....

Nice pics again, but its still hard to have sympathy for your issues while your out doing that stuff while we all work <_<

I'd expect 140ks as quite doable for your WR and some Americans report more than 150k on their speedos,

You should have about 25hp at the wheels enough to get near there. http://www.thumpertalk.com/topic/520305-wr250r-dyno-report/

In the Eighties I once saw 155kph on a geared up XR250 (22.5 rwhp) yes all the hill and wind planets had aligned on that day but it gives you an idea of what's possible. (actually if my memories serves me correctly I was using a 500 to slip stream as well)

Yea I know it bugs you, main reason for posting:innocent:

Mods I've done should have it producing 28hp from numorus dynos others have done, some claim 30 but I think that particular type of dyno over reads. I was happy with the bump in power from mods: airbox, exhaust and fuel mapping, the stock ones are choked up pretty good for the greenies:sick:

Big bore should get at least 33hp (290cc) much more in the touque.... I keep wondering about it... You get more vibes (hardly any stock anyway) and lower revs a bit. $800nz on ebay I think. Long term reviews are favorable. I wouldn't do it but you can get it to 310cc with a stroker crank (heard bad things), can get hotter cams too.

Decisions decisions.... Think I'll keep it as my dirt type bike and buy a street bike when I get my full license.

That all sounds about right, you know my riding philosophy is multi bike.

My YZF is a big bore (290), difference over stock is massive and I had to gear it up as it used up the gears to quick, supposed to be about 37hp but its really the torque increase that you notice the most, its almost like a different bike and doesn't give a lot away to the 450's now

The torque would be lovely, the WRR aint happy till ~7k revs.

Yeah multi bike is looking like the way for me.... Might buy (Borrow:devil2:) the old mans PE 250 and get it running sweet for the fun factor in the dirt.

Yeah multi bike is looking like the way for me.... Might buy (Borrow:devil2:) the old mans PE 250 and get it running sweet for the fun factor in the dirt.

Sounds like I will need to come over and assist with set up and testing in all of those case's

Would start with PE's and controlled sorties and see which is more likely to make the better ADV bike (could trailer them somewhere legalish first) and then take it from there, its going it will be a big job with lots of sliding and wheelies involved

O well them's the breaks :woohoo:

Went down Mangiti Rd and Te Akau Warf Rd to look out over Raglan Harbor to Raglan, had a close call with a semi on Mangiti Rd just had enough room to squeeze down the side of it and stay upright:shit:. Mangiti Rd has just had fresh gravel layed on it so it got a bit sketchy with the pressure I had in the tyres, let them down a bit then had me some fun :woohoo:

I didn't think I had enough time to do the west coast trip this morning. I am quite keen to go all the way down to Kawhia -or at least around Kariori and Prionga if you are interested-be a long day but should be ok if I get away early enough. I'm coming from South Auckland where would you meet? Maybe next weekend?

Sounds cool but unsure yet, would have to be DRBIG at this stage as still sorting 2smoke for longer trips (extra fuel cans, new front tire and balance to stop front end shake at speed, tools and spare spark plug)

Getting there though and tried out some mods today as per this post http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/165615-2-Stroke-ADV-Heaven?p=1130702153#post1130702153

Nice day for a ride to Kaiauwa:sunny:

Mataharu/Ohinewhi Road had just been graded to a pretty nasty camber which made for a more cautious ride over the Hapuakohe Range.

Came across a MX day on Coxhead Rd in a recently cut Maize paddock. Stopped for a quick look, thought about doing a lap but the Shinko 700 isn't really designed for that + im a stingy bugger and didnt want to let go of some coin (basicly just scared:baby:)

On to the East Coast Rd aka birdwatching coast? everyone needs a hobby I guess. After buzzing around the motorhomes and scaring of the birds:devil2: I stoped for a photo op:

Stoped at the pub in Kaiaua for a well earnt drink, alot of cool bikes there today. I dont usually have a beer if I'm riding but the day asked for it.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7032/13658314393_4c25d3df8a.jpg

Went up into the Hunua Ranges to one of the reservoirs, was a nice metal road that deserves steering with the rear, disappointed to find the gate locked past the reservoir; was looking forward for alot of fun in there. Always locked?

After a while I forgot the pain but they definitely went in the wash as soon as I got home.

Some observations, a tall 120kg bike is not very stable in a straight line, but awesome everywhere else,

I went into the depths of the Bombing range in the worst conditions I've ever seen and the RMX did it effortlessly, I climbed a couple of dunes which I would have thought were impossible on dot rated tires and dropped off the mighty big dipper and lived.

One off the best and worst rides ever all in one which pretty much sums up the RMX, I have some ideas for mods to improve things and now have a bike that can go pretty much anywhere.

One last observation on tight road corners once you get used to the two stroke engine the lack of weight allows you to run right to the edge of the 606 dunlops and you feel as if you would fall over if you went much further, great fun indeed (I think I'm hooked on this thing)

this is my dilemma - do I stay with my bike and or get something a little bigger as I actually quite like te road ridoing thing. The Terra is ok on the beach, I went and had a ride around the lagoon at Kaipara South head a few weeks ago but I wouldn't take it anywhere near the dunes. I would like a more dirt oriented bike but it's not as good on the road- I really regret selling my WR now:-(

Did you have the WRR before? I was seriously thinking of selling it not long ago because of the lack of power, but I've decided there just isn't anything in the market that ticks all the boxes, If only Yamaha had made it a 300 or 350 stock...
Current plan is to keep it as it is a small do anything bike, trails, road and adv.... And put the 290 kit on it at some stage soon. When I have my full I'll go muliti bike and have the wrr + bike x.... Maybe a speed tripple have to wait and see.

Have you seen that new CCM Adventure bike? 450 long service life, light etc.

My last bike was a Husky WR300. Ironically the guy that I sold it to was going to get it registered so he could ride to trail rides . I should have kept it then I could have chased chooks as well:-)

Given that there was the trail ride at Waikarutu today I went the other way -----just about didn't head into the Waikato as it was pretty foggy and had the closest call I have had since starting to ride on the road. Coming across the top of the Bombays there were three or 4 plastic kyaks bouncing accross the road- luckily there was a gap. Also found Matahuru Rd, and then went up towards Whitianga and went across the 309 road and back home via Miranda and Kaiua etc.

From what I saw I'll be back, cool views etc... Didn't make the sand dunes:weep::weep:

They missed out the big dunes this time maybe back in next year.

Should I point out the guy on the road legal DR650 made it round in one piece:lol:

Throw some duct tape on your hand and try some more trail rides.

I already said that I've given up on this place having any sensible content due to its signal to noise ratio. Notwithstanding that, the last posts were regarding the meeting at Eddies place. The rest of it was down to Mr Dickheads "do you ever ride" comment.

Party on, I say.

Saw you pass me on the motorway, just before the kayaks. I stopped and went back to move them but another bloke in a ute had already stopped to do the same.

Should I point out the guy on the road legal DR650 made it round in one piece:lol:

I thought you must be off to the trail ride with those little cans of petrol strapped to your carrier:-) I didn't really feel like stopping but did wonder what happend to you. It was probably lucky there wasn't a decent pile up.

If anybody is interested in joining me on either route PM me and I will send you my mobile....planning on an early start but I am pretty relaxed about how the day might unfold and I will wing the route onthe day- assuming I have a say:-)

Aah dratts already organized a ride with some road bike buddies through Riverhead to Woodcocks road and onto Goat island, Leigh for Sunday afternoon,

Still a good ride mind you and your welcome to join in

My weapon of choice for the day will be
<a href="http://s603.photobucket.com/user/800rider/media/Pictures003_zps5a999594.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i603.photobucket.com/albums/tt119/800rider/Pictures003_zps5a999594.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo Pictures003_zps5a999594.jpg"/></a>

This should allow me to fend off the Red Aprillia Tuono (in truth we will be running the pace of a fast Harley also travelling with us)
Leave 25 Arrenway Dr Albany at 1pm tomorrow if your interested, will be a good semi relaxing ride with Woodcocks road tight bends to add some fun and fish and chips at one of NZ's bests at Leigh

Hi,

didn't see you guys. Met a guy on a KTM 690 and in the back of Mangawai and rode back with him via Puhoi. Went through Leigh about 2pm.

Did just a tick under 500 kms

Auckland to Paeroa via Tuakau, Glen Murray, Huntly. No metal riads today as the guy I was riding withhas an aversion to them

Yer its choice out there, was about the same amount of time for me, though half of it was spent in the dunes:Punk:, Those metal roads are cool and found the back stepping out a few times at reasonable speed in the 4WD with the trailer on :woohoo:

Drooling a bit over a 2010 6 days 530 exc at Boyd's today. Tempting as I've pretty much decided one of these big bore KTM's will replace the WRR. From my research on ADVrider they should suit what I'm looking for, maintenance used to concern me but I think I'm over that, they seem pretty reliable, and I only do day rides anyway. Money is the only thing holding me back ATM (damn engagement ring...) :shifty:

Yes and no... from what I see on ADVrider they will do a multi day rides easy enough... just need to take some oil and clean air filter. Basicly the WR is great at most of what I'm doing... but lacks power when I need it on the road (overtaking uphill, headwind etc.), also I would appreciate better suspension and weight on trails. I'm willing to spend a bit more time on maintenance for these things.... I just think if I do big bore the WR I'll be over the power increase pretty quick and it'll still be lacking in other areas. A 690 would be nice but still to heavy for hard trails with my lack of skills. The newer 500 exc would be good as it holds more oil and I might wait till there is some in my price range.

What do you think Mark? Give it to me straight
