My first largeish ride ~5hrs.
I'm going solo on my fxr150. Gonna be rather gruelling because its not comfortable over long distances but I'll survive.
I'm not going to be doing anything stupid just going to try comfortable and relax.
Anyone got any tips? Currently I'm going to top up the gas, oil and tyre pressure.
Got to organise my stop points so I don't run out of fuel in the desert road :).
Bringing Lunch and a drink bottle with me. Hopefully the weathers good.

Wouldn't do SH1 the whole way mate, gets really boring. But up to you. Gas you should be allright, there is a station roughly at the middle of dessert road on your right side as you're headed south so doub't you'll run out. Depends on your tank and milage.
Have fun.

I did a run last weekend from Wellington to auckland on my cbr250 just to get it up the road, I filled up 3 times but probably could have gotten away with less! I stopped in Nat park for the night... it was bloody cold minds you, even if you have a decent jacket and leather trousers I would still suggest taking lots of thin layers underneath... the worsed though was my hands got REALLY cold, try and get a winter glove for the trip. I took a spare pair incase mine got soaked!
I find singing to my helmet passes the time :cold: :woohoo:

Would have had company today, Saw a bunch of bikes heading out tword Palmy on SH3 as I went across town to the dump. May have had trouble keeping up with that bucnh though. All on litre bikes and looked like they knew how to use them.
A few cruisers heading in that direction from town though.

Probably heading to the Cold Kiwi.
I wondered if they had put a gas station in the middle of the Desert Road without me noticing, but then I realised the post said the Dessert Road so I figured it was in Never-Never Land!

Yea that's what I figured.
And har har har so my spelling sucks. Bite me.
As for the station it may not be on desert road but damn near it and in an area that looks like a desert. Only reason I remember it is cause I didn't see it on the way down and I could have used it instead of wondering if I would make it to Bulls on my reserve tank.
Definatly not doing that trip at night again, to many close calls with ost of the servos being closed.

Yesterday would have been good plenty of riders heading down for the cold kiwi,if you don't want to go the Desert road route then try Taumarunui turning off at highway 49A towards Ohakune coming out at Waiouru where you'll find a Caltex service station on the right hand side of the road(if you should need to know). :motu:
Have fun mate & enjoy

me too, but may not be happening if the weather doesn't improve. Don't have any wet weather gear so hypothermia is possible if I'm not careful.

Bugger that.. I do hammy to new plymouth semi regularly (every 1-2 months), did it in full wet weather ger in a raging southerly a few months ago, and I was still wet and cold by the end of the ride (Longjohns, leather pants, waterproof overtrou, long sleeve T, teknics jacket, waterproof overjacket).. Worst part was finding my gloves were far from waterproof.. even with polyprop gloves under my bike gloves my hands were so freaking sore from the cold.
That being said i'd still do it again :ride: :ride:

Keep warm. Keep as dry as you can. If you get cold it becomes dangerous as you lose concentration. If it's cold and wet it's worse.
Stop often to have a snack and a drink.
If you get really tired, stop - either for the night or for a bit of a rest.
Wear earplugs.
Let us know when you're leaving so we can keep an eye on the weather.
Enjoy!

I did that trip just after queens birthday weekend. Greast ride. Took the lil ninja for a run. 3 and a half hours and $16 in petrol, $18 in hot food and $630 in fines. Not a bad day out.
