View Full Version : Helmet-mounted digital video camera?

Can anybody recommend a digital video camera for mounting on either helmet or bike, apart from go-pro. Need something easy/ simple to use. prefer a stop-go button that I can flick while riding if such a thing is around. want good battery life and can take a large memory card. Oh also reasonably wide angle and stability. Can't afford to spend an awful lot either. sorry if there is already a thread about this but I could not find one. Thanks

I have a spare Vholder ( early Contour standard definition) which I have replaced with a GoPro. The contour is slimmer and easier to operate than the GoPro but the SD video is nowhere as sharp as hd. The contour had a mount on my helmet and a homemade mount on the handle bars. Some early cameras can be good value providing they haven't been knocked around.

I like my Replay XD. Easy to use on the fly, takes great video, easy to mount etc etc.

yep, my first thought was the same, mounted on the chin guard might be the safest option at least that way you only loose a few teeth or your jaw  Actually you are less likely to directly impact the chin guard, any impact to the chin guard is likely to scrape the camera off.

I got a "M500 Sport DV" (sometimes called the Sport F9, Sport M500 F9) camera for my commute in, handy to have for insurance claims is my logic, it cost US$79 which included a 16GB card and free shipping from China .. camera isn't bad quality, seems tough enough, but the helmet mount is more geared to cyclists .. since the camera is the same form factor as the ReplayXD (much better camera to be honest, but 3 times the price) I was planning on getting a helmet mount for one of those and using it with my camera.
If you want an idea of what video is like when mounted to the handle bars I have a few videos up on Youtube : http://www.youtube.com/user/Marksmithinnz/videos

if you can find a Sony ADR 15 for sale, it ticks all your boxes except for the price. The first-generation ones are cheap these days because the next gen is out already, you might be lucky.

Generally rather than specifically regarding Akzle who is often amusing, that's an interesting question. Recent research indicates that internet trolls tend to be arseholes in real life as well. Not that that will come as a surprise to most people.

videoing everything is the modern day equivalent of your relatives having the snaps from their holiday cruise printed as slides.
And you, not giving a fuck, being subjected to them,
so you try and avoid them, not go over. But ineviatably you do in the end,
maybe at christmas or some shit, and youre hardly in the fucking door and they come at you with 'oh you havent seen our holiday snaps!'
while the rest of your family glares at you, because they didnt hold out as long in the first place, and now have to sit through them AGAIN for your supposed benefit,
because if they make excuses now, theyll miss out on ham.
And those fat fucks love ham.
So you sit through it, and they sit through it. And in the end everyone gets ham.
And then guess what, your rich aunty bought your uncle a video camera! He's keen to try it out but the dumb bitch didnt charge it up first, so you have to sit around for 3 hours until its charged, by which time grandpa has gotten into the rumballs and grans gone for a valium and a nap, the aunties are 70% alcopopped,
and youre left with a drunk grampa and your weird uncles, one with a video camera, they offer you rum and cola... suddenly all your brothers, cousins are out in the yard, and youre in the spare room, and the video camera is on the bookshelf, and youre a bit stoned off the rum...
Anyway. The moral of the story is that cunts who video everyshit are assholes.

Hehehe - great post akzle.
I have a helmet mounted camera and I'd agree that most of what I video on the bike is dead fucking boring. So much so that I don't bother posting them for public consumption. Any I do post I keep private for the likes of my biker brother in the sarf island who likes to watch road loony riding. Not that I do any of that of course.... It's other road loonies I show him.
Incidentally, I think the only arseholes are those that make us watch what they have videoed.

while the others are engaging in their side show, I wanted to say I have a Sony Action Cam and find it pretty good. Have tried it on the helmet (must be side mounted, it cant go on the chin bar, handlebars and a couple of other places on the bike.
Quality of the video is great, not the same aftermarket support with gadgets as GoPro but enough to keep most happy. Trademe has some ok deals on them.

Not saying the OP is going to be an offender.
But I started a thread ages ago about the absolute pile of crap accumulating on youtube of unbelievably boring clips from motorcyclists. There is an obsession by youtubers that think that every dull, mind numblingly mundane event in their life must be shared with the 9 billion people on our planet - actually NO!
Hi everyone, Here's my bike idling on the driveway for 19 minutes enjoy. Here's the same 19 minutes but excitingly filmed from the right hand side. Here's my uneventful commute on Monday, On Tues, Wed, Thur... yawn!
I see cyclists and motorcylists daily riding around with stupid cams sticking out from every orifice they can find. GIVE IT UP. WE DON'T GIVE A SHIT.
ps- good luck with the camera hunting. Maybe film the footpath as you walk from shop to shop to check out prices etc. Exhilarating stuff that.

I don't know if its possible but to be able to make a video play back in such a way that a rollercoaster illusion is created would look good and I think the camera would have to be mounted close to the road for this, about go kart height and the playback sped up. My attempt at more than 2x playback speed has resulted in the video breaking up though which I have read is due to the limited power of the CPU in the computer.
no one cares.

Buy a contour camera, they are very good. I see all the tossers have come out of the woodwork to express their opinions on this thread about what they think about videos.
If you want a good camera buy a contour, full 1080p, great mountings, I even have one which has gps in it which gives speed etc and shows you on a map where you were. I personally don't post it online, as it is purely for myself.
Go pros look like tele tubies and look bloody stupid on helmets. The contour roam model is also waterproof without a case. I have bought several and have landed them here for under $200 bucks NZ each, so within your budget.
Send me a pm if you like...

Hi all
Thought I would share my new bike camera project :)
Just picked one of these up- (Sony Xperia Acro S):niceone:
297098
http://www.gsmarena.com/sony_xperia_acro_s-4781.php
IP57 certified -Water proof, dust proof, does 1080p@30fps with video stabilization out the front camera, and can do 720p@30fps out the back camera (And you can flip between the two on the fly with a single dap on the screen...record road, record your ugly mug, back to road and so on lol)
Currently looking at grabing a Ram mount Universal X-Grip
297095
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045072079076045085078055066085/Default.aspx
on a Ram stem base with the usual peg adaptor (Still gotta measure that tho)-
297094
http://www.rammount.com/CatalogResults/PartDetails/tabid/63/partid/082065077045066045051052050085/Default.aspx
And once I have all of that that(Or rather, Once I have saved up for all of that $$), I will be adapting and hardwiring a permanent Xperia charge base unit to the X-Grip-(Well, by hardwired, I mean that I will fix a mini usb charger to the bike that plugs into the base unit, that is somehow attached to the X-Grip:confused:...that way I can take the whole unit off & only be left with a single usb wire)
297096
This way the phone can just "slot" into the base unit to charge while attached to the bike, with out effecting the water proofing of the unit :niceone: (Xperia has two little brass recharge "tabs" on the side for charging, so you don't need to use the normal mini usb port...as it is under a water proof cover)
So once the above setup is completed, I will hopefully have an all in one unit that does GPS, Multi direction HD video recording and all the other flash shit this thing can do :msn-wink:...and then can be quickly unclipped and put in ya pocket...just like a phone
Yup...Granted, its only 30fps, not the most amazing quality, but still a usable setup non the less, but the main thing is, that with a 32g micro SDHC card and 11g of on board storage...It can record all day
thoughts?...you lot see any possible issues with the above setup? (Please advise before I start hiding even more money from my Charlotte to pay for this pricey crap lol)

FPS will affect quality before resolution does. Have a look at some 30fps sample videos and compare to 60fps.
30fps is fine for walking pace, soccer pace looks pixelated and paginated.
Don't take my word for it. Look at contour or similar comparison videos on you tube.

Looking at the video buffer is also important. This is how vibration is isolated from the write procedure.
Your setup will work, but not as well as a dedicated system.
Depends what you are trying to achieve. If just a record go for it. If your wanting to wow your friends with the quality of your video you need 60fps.

Yup, understand that
"Yup...Granted, its only 30fps, not the most amazing quality, but still a usable setup non the less"
Ive also got a Kodak ZX1 attached to my back pack strap (never leave home without it!)...thats 60fps and gives a "slightly" better picture than the Xperia.
Ive done a test run with the phone, and was actually really impressed with the video quality...and the video stabilization was actually pritty good.(better than I expected)
Im not after a "look at my rides!" set-up (I never really share my vids and can't be arsed posting them on youtube etc)...my only requirements are for insurance purpose's and capturing any "incidents" etc...and the GPS function!...cos Im the type that could get lost in a supermarket!
Hence, "uber high def" is not really a priority for me...mostly interested in good usable functionality for a resonable price.

16th May 2014, 12:00
If you have a look in the settings most phones will allow you to sacrifice def for FPS. Try both options and see what you like for your intended purpose. He'll you could even go lo red and low FPS to boost your recording time. Action cans may be more suitBle for crash recording just because they write in smaller blocks and therefore usually capture up to the second before the impact. Phones usually only dump to card about once every 10 or 30 seconds depending on the speed of medium.
