Have had a few queries about track layout, location and pits from NI riders.
Basic track plan attached showing details.
Pit area is fairly tight so get in early if you want the best spaces.
Entry into pits Via Barkers road

We aim to have practice round and 4 rounds of racing, Possibly 5 if everyone can stay on their bikes :niceone:

Accommodation available in Methven township at various hotels, motels and backpackers. Ashburton is also close by .
Methven is about 1 hour 10 mins from CHCH.

Damn, that CAMS junior clubmans class would be perfect for my 1989 VT250 that I've just got ready for prolite250 club racing. Canterbury is too far for me though :(

The pegs are a bit low for normal race tracks, but on a road circuit you leave much more room for error so clearance would be okay.

How many people do you normally get racing at this event?

There is a big combined truck racing / super moto event at Ruapuna the weekend before Methven Street Races.
Some super moto riders are planning on racing Ruapuna leaving their bikes down here then flying back or staying for Methven the following weekend.

Its a cool event, as above we are expecting 120+ riders , usually 3-4000 spectators.
Short track (1km) by NZ street racing standards but still quite quick. Top riders lapping around 32-35 seconds.

CAMS Club pride ourselves on lots of track time and no stress, FUN racing.

Accomodation options here...

Sorry Sir, but we are hoping to have Classic sidecars racing at our 3 day Southern Classic/post classic meeting 5-7th of December at Levels. Maybe pre 82 sidecars as well depending on interest.

Hi All,
Your entry to Methven Mountain Thunder Street Race April 19th is confirmed.
Pits will be tight so get in early, please pit as close to the Blue pub & carpark as possible to make it easier to hear race call ups.
If possible park your cars/trailers in the event carpark at the end of Kilworth St ( across the race track from the entry to the pits) .
Riders with campers or buses please be considerate and not take up all the space in the pits.

Sign on will be on the deck beside Samuels bar ( blue pub) 7.30-9.00am Sat
Bring helmets and licenses to sign on, other gear will be checked by Stewards on the dummy grid.
Stewards will also be checking your tether kill switches are functional.
Riders Breifing 9.00am same place
Practice starting 9.30am (subject to track sign off)
Scruitineering will be of a random nature performed in the pits.
Grid positions stickers will be placed on your bikes on the dummy grid when you go out for your class practice.
Racing closes 4.00pm

Street racing is dangerous, there are few run offs, the road surface is variable and if you come off... 40 seconds later max, riders will be coming around onto you again.
Because of this falling off will probably mean the race is red flagged and will not be restarted.
For the sake of safety and other riders in your class please ride responsibly and relative to conditions so we can ALL have a great FUN full day of racing.

Look forward to seeing you all Easter Sat for a great days racing.

Dont forget your red lights just in case

Yep, racing wet of fine.

Forecast for showers clearing overnight/early morning, probably turning Norwest and up to 20 degrees depending on which forecast you believe.
As Elipsis said a lot of weather from the nor east and south doesn't get into Methven.

Fingers crossed... its never rained on the race yet, only over night.

Car was the recovery vehicle and where it was parked is not normally an impact zone, very unusual place for riders to crash and end up.
Racing was immediately stopped and extra bales added to area, Cops were also stationed there to help keep clear of people.

Spectator numbers usually 3-5000 , definitely down to around 2000 this year due to poor weather leading up to the event.
People were coming and going all day.

.

Ummm, outside of ANY corner is a usual place for bikes to end up if it all goes pear shaped....
Hence most times I opperate a recovery vehicle i am on the INSIDE of the track....
Although there is no rule that says bikes won't end up there either.....

in point of fact, that is the inside of the track...and the pit exit. Having run the dummy grid there in a previous year and been stood on that corner all day, I'm still trying to work out how the hell they wound up where they did. Mike's leathers must have given enough grip to curl the pair of them well off line. Normal impact zone there is about 10m to the right in the direction of travel.
However, as triplenut says, more bales in there and cops to keep people back - and a no go zone in future.

Fair enough............

From the laps I've done round there on foot, looked like it happened pretty close to where theres a water? cover in the road (always well marked by the Organisers ), sure wasn't where I'd expect any "braking" incident though.

I'd agree with Greg, having been there alongside him at times - but, as we can clearly see, the unexpected can and does happen ..........

Autech
23rd April 2014, 16:00
Happened right next to me and I didn't notice :shit:.

Been to Methven 3 times now and I must say from a spectators perspective there are a few places I wouldn't stand, that corner being one of them and the other two coming on to the main straight as I'd fear a 1000cc high siding and catapulting into me.
That said street racing is dangerous and even with the most pre-planning incidents do happen, I remember I was at Paeroa a few years back and a chap hit a forklift which was parked up. Lets hope the fireman that got hit recovers quickly.

Looked like an odd accident possibly a locked up front in the dirty stuff off line?

Definitely a lot less spectators this year, but the weather would have scared many a biker away. Over all had a great day, weather held out, some great battles in the pre '89 class, Phillip Muir had that VFR flying, very impressive.
Can't wait to get my arse/bike sorted out and give it go myself!

dangerous
23rd April 2014, 17:13
interesting for me as I saw it straight on, and having seen the on bike cam posted back a page... IMO a typical racing crash, 88 was taking 8 on what will soon be the inside (oppisite side to were wreckage ended up) a very nice pass but for some reason just after the pass and while in the middle of the track 88 front locked up went full lock and down, 8 ran him over, with all the friction the bikes changed direction and headed infeild. Yes a bail beter placed would have helped but shit... were on a street circuit is a safe place? there aint, and if there was why would ya watch from there, nature of the beast, damned if ya do damned if ya dont.

I remember watching a CBR get a tankslaper on, bike ended up over a fence were you would last expect an impact.
