View Full Version : What are the redeeming qualities of Tauranga? Or the deal-breakers?

PirateJafa

So I've got a Tauranga-based outfit looking to poach me away from where I've been stuck in Auckland. Despite being a little rouch at the moment, they seem pretty serious about turning into a competent and serious contender in the industry, which is promising.

However it does mean moving to Tauranga. Or more accurately, convincing my partner to move to Tauranga with me.

To me, Tauranga/The Mount seems to have a number of upsides - sunnier than Auckland, only 2/3 as many hours in the work week, no traffic to speak of. Possibly most importantly of all, the "rush" to have absolutely everything done by yesterday isn't there.

Downsides are leaving behind work opportunities for my partner, and her family is in Auckland. And rents don't seem to be hugely cheaper than Auckland options.

Long story short, what other redeeming qualities does Tauranga have that I could use to "sell" it to my partner? And is there anything anyone might suggest to watch out for - IE avoid moving into certain areas [Welcome Bay?]?

Much appreciated.

There's beaches with waves, people speak predominantly English and it's a great launch place for a hoon around east cape.

The fish & chip shop down the waterfront in TGA is pretty good, the Kaimais are right on Taurangas back doorstep and it's not Auckland. Assuming the new firm will pay all relocation costs, what the fuck are you waiting for?

And further away from Hampton Downs! But evened out a little by being closer to Taupo.

Hearing out another offer too, but suspect it won't be a contender [though would be happy to be surprised]. I haven't seen many Asians in the area when I've been down, there isn't any particular anti-Asian sentiment is there? My partner being NZ-born of Chinese heritage.

Auckland surely leads the North Island stakes in anti-Asian sentiment, well ahead of any other N.I city I visit. Talk to Nodrog, he knows all about Towel-Wronger. Hell, I never knew they had coconuts down there until Gordy enlightened us all just recently (they have three apparently).

The Maori population of Tauranga is 16.6% while the Maori population of Auckland is 11.1%. (Auckland might just have numerically more, but we are more obvious in Tauranga).

Coffees in Auckland are shit for some reason. I've only had the occasional good one when I've been up that way and friends who live up there have found the same thing. Coffee anywhere but Auckland just seems to be brewed better.

'T's the water they use ... Auckland has recycled Waikato River water - flavoured with a few dead bodies (human and animal) and lots of chemicals .. makes for shit coffee!!!

I thought that was Nelson? Newly-weds and nearly-deads, I was told... Lol

The Kaimais are fun but have a very high population of police cars per km of decent riding road.
Tauranga looked to me to have been a sleepy seaside town (and all the better for it) which woke up to being somewhere that could sustain business and industry. The bits I have seen are nice.
Waihi Beach is pretty good, too.

I have lived in Aucks, on and off over the period of 10 years, and trust me TGA is betterer full.stop!

Re: "her family in Auckland" I am the same. My Sister and nieces live up there, but they use every excuse to come down and visit to get away from Aucks. So I bet she will see her family just as much - if not more.

For us to help you "sell" TGA to your partner, it might help if you give us more info about what she likes/does.

Very "scenic" since they reduced the speed limit to 80kms right the way through there. And not once have I been through there and not seen a cop.

Oh - if you're going to heading to and from Auckland at all, the Karangahake Pass is really nice. Not the place for any heroics, but a scenic drive or ride.If Bucklands Beach area will be your regular visiting locality turn off at Ngatea and take the route through Miranda / Kawakawa Bay. When I lived in Omokoroa area (north of TGA) from 97-03 I often visited friends in Howick and travelled that route. Usually light traffic, few cops and interesting road. IMO SH2 through Maramarua to the bottom of the Bombays doesn't make the good bits like K' Gorge worth it, and K' Gorge is between TGA and Ngatea anyway :woohoo:

Don't think TGA has no traffic hassles. Better than Auckland (isn't anywhere?) but if you are choosing suburbs keep commuting in mind.

Weather tends to be more settled and less windy than Auckland too. Expect lots of visitors during the summer

Apologies for the belated reply, have been tied up [figuratively speaking] at work.

She's a PE teacher, though has also made decent money in the past nannying. Also does private cricket coaching. She plays netball and cricket herself. I suspect I'll be carrying the finances for a while, but that's not really a issue for me.

I've lived in Auckland, Moscow and Wellington - comparatively speaking, it's a stroll. :) Nonetheless, I'll probably be looking in the Papamoa/Maungatapu/Mount areas, as I'll be working in Bayfair. Should avoid any major traffic, especially once the Papamoa motorway section they're improving is finished.

The Maori population of Tauranga is 16.6% while the Maori population of Auckland is 11.1%. (Auckland might just have numerically more, but we are more obvious in Tauranga).I would have thought there are fewer from the warmer pacific islands though, so that stat doesn't mean a lot.

Old man lives in Tauranga, reckon I see a lot more white trash than darkies there though when I go to visit...so naturally I quite like it.

Plus, I tend to visit Gordie and Tina. Doesn't get more white trash than the three of us, some other sidecar racers, and Jay Lawrence sitting round swiggin woodys from a 440.

We have heaps of Asians too, Ive counted more than 5 in the same place at one time. We love Asians here, especially ones that can cook butter chicken, or have funny voice like Spray and walk away man.

Don't even factor traffic into anything, its not worth worrying about. And you can get from Papamoa to Bayfair without even using that piece of motorway and its probably just as quick.

What you do for a job? Does it pay heaps? If so can you hook me up with one?

The only downside I see in moving from AKL to Tauranga is that your partner doesn't have a job. If you guys can survive on one salary at least for a short while (and with survive I mean food, roof and motorbikes of course...) then there is no downside at all.

But there are many upsides:

1) It's not Auckland
2) No comparable traffic
3) It's beautiful there
4) More relaxed
5) Won't take you ages until you find some nice bike roads... I mean of course nice places to go and have a hike and picnic with your partner...;)
6) It has cafes, pubs, restaurant, cinema(s?) etc so you guys won't miss anything like that
7) Close enough to Auckland for family, shopping etc
8) Far away enough from Auckland to not to be too close to family...
9) It won't take you ages to get to the beach
10) Its big enough for your partner to find a job or jobs (and I heard they do have kids and schools and sports clubs there, too, so here you go :D)
11) If you don't like it after 1 year, 2 years whatever, you can always go back to AKL, but at least you tried and you won't regret not going.

If you have a good paying job do what you can to keep it as the job market (pay and decent roles) is shit compared to where you are coming from.
The Kaimais are a nice stretch of road however it does become a little "done" after a bit.
Coro is just "there" and doesn't take long for it to lose its shine too (just like anywhere).

I dunno - weren't they the crowd that kept voting in Winston. He's big on that 'getting ahead by running down other people' stuff.

There is some fantastic riding on your door-step from Tauranga, and without having to travel for an hour down a motorway to get there. One of the down-sides is that being a tourist town you'll get frustrated with crowds and lack of parking over peak summer months. But you'll also have those beautiful beaches on your doorstep.
