Okay, I do it all the time. Just can't help myself. I merge back into the flow if the traffic on the motorway is moving at approx 55-60 k's on a 2-lane and 30-40 k's on a 3 or 4-lane.

Personally, I'm just pleased to know that the I am getting to where I am going a lot quicker than the cagers or the sardines.

As I am sure most of you do it, at what speed do you determine it is safer for all concerned to merge back into the traffic flow?

I ask because, though I'm not jealous or nuffing, I see riders splitting lanes at 100k's +. Is that you?

fuk, hope not..
there's tons of threads on this topic, this (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showpost.php?p=153758&postcount=11) is still what I ride by, fyi..
20k or less (which you didn't put as an option..) No way would I do anymore than 25kph, no matter what.

If traffic speed drops below 20km then i'll start spliting if i'm in a hurry and once it picks up again to about 40-50 i'll merge back in

I filter around 60 but join the circus again once the cans start getting to 50+.

For me it's not a matter of how fast, but how much faster than the other traffic.

Normally I'll split up to 20ish ks faster than the traffic that I'm splitting past.

Lane splitting is illegal and therefore I dont do it or recommend it!

Always seem to find false neutral whilst lane splitting

I do it but I don't enjoy it! It's often dangerous and the 'police paranoia' invloved is frustrating. :Police:  :Police:

If I were to give up filtering completely I may as well drive a cage! :gob:

Sort of sums it all up, really!

Don't really want to start a large debate on this but I have an interesting anecdote to share.

I discussed this whole "lanesplitting/filtering" thing with a local HP recently and got some interesting advice.

The local Welly police believe there is a difference between the two.

Filtering is where you are moving quickly from lane to lane through the small gaps that appear through the traffic. According to the HP representative, this is perfectly legal and if you don't do it stupidly or dangerously you can do it up to the speed limit without being pulled up at all.

Lanesplitting is where you occupy the same lane as another vehicle and you will get pulled up for it and done if seen.

As for how I ride - I only have 5 demerits left until I lose my licence. I'm being good until at least October 25....

After seeing a mate get crunched when were both in our teens, I have very rarely done it since.

He was probably doing about 20-25 kph when a car moved over and he basically got sandwiched :( These days he still has more metal in him than the average cage, and a fast hobble is about his limit on foot.

Yes for sure. You won't ever catch me in traffic. :devil2:

I see riders splitting lanes at 100k's +. Is that you?Quite likely.

If there's room, and I'm in the mood (99% of the time) and the conditions are right (92%) then I split. If the 5-0 are around, I filter past, then split (literally). Speed differential varies between 10k and 150k (one-off insanity), usually around the 20-50k range. Road speed? Irrelevant to me.

I rarely lane split because the GN has bars at about rear vision mirror level of cars. When I do it's in stationary traffic and I go no faster than 20 k's between them.

I quite regularly tap my elbows on mirrors and stuff, once caught the front brake lever on a mirror as well but only just.

hm better ask TS if he remembers how fast it was coming back up the southern........

On my "light" bike (xv500) i lane split up til 20-30kph but i don't at all on my "heavy" 750 watercooled 4 cylinder Honda Magna.
I do it carefully and only if there is good room, If not i merge and wait or try the other side.

Yep I lane split or filter what ever you want to call it. Once the traffiic is stationary or near to it is when I start to do this, but only because I can.
I dont "Like" doing it, what I mean is its not fun for me, its more of I can so I will. As its been said before otherwise I would take the cage.
The Terrace tunnel is the place that I hate spliting the most. its quite narrow and I really take my time thru there. But it can save me 10 min's in the mornings I go into Welly and if I dont the RF's fan has started by the time I get thru the tunnel after sitting in the queue

I'll lane split all the time, but only really filter at lights or when the cars have come to a complete stop, that way I'm sure they're not moving anywhere without me noticing.

On a similar note... during morning rushhour traffic I sit on the median strip from Mission Bay right onto the dual carrageway heading into the CBD, never been stopped for it, and cuts a good 20-30mins off my travel time easily.

Edit : I think that's the right way around? But you know what I mean.

I do exactly the same... didn't do it for a while as I was getting used to the dimensions of the bike, clutch, low speed maneuvering etc but if there's room, I'm there.

I also do the median strip too... I agree, it cuts so much time down. I leave my indicator on tho, and merge back in before getting to the various islands and crossings that get in the way

I know it seems strange - but i only lane split when there is speed involved. When i lived out west i seemed to chase a guy riding a harley on the western while doing it. We would be doing about 80+.
Also since my accident i realise that there are more morons in cars cutting through traffic at 0-20k's then there are at 100ks.
Imagine if you will - would you lane split in a carpark? Cos thats what 50k roads are like in gridlock, sure the cars looked stopped, but 1 out every 1000 is going to directly cut your path
