Mechanic in Christchurch

Hi folks,

I just brought my GN250 to a mechanic on Friday as it was acting up, cost $220. When I took it out on Saturday for a spin I noticed that the speedo wasn’t working.

Im wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of a private mechanic or guys who do nixers as close to the city centre as possible as i dont want to get charged huge hourly rates again if its not necessary.

Hey mate - the speedo is very potentially an easy one to fix yourself on a GN250. I had a similar issue on my VT250 and I can't imagine the 'technology' being much different. In essence there is a cable which runs from the speedometer to the front wheel. Sometimes the cable becomes degraded/corroded and sometimes it just comes loose/unplugged. You should disconnect it from the back of the speedo, push the bike forwards and see if the inside of the cable is turning. If so, it's not the cable and might be the workings of the speedometer. If it isn't turning then you probably need to replace the cable, which isn't a huge hassle in itself. For a common bike like the GN250 a replacement part should be easy to find and fairly inexpensive. You might even find that just disconnecting and reconnecting the cable resolves the problem.

Yeah I did that on Saturday and no the cable is not turning, which from trawling kiwibiker means that either the cable is broken or the cable drive unit is broken.
To get the cable off I have to take off the wheel..........I am not confident riding around at 100k on a bike that I put the front wheel on so I would really like to have someone who knows their stuff to have a look.

It might not be a big job but I dont want to get charged an arm and a leg by a mechanic who had a quite day and needed to put hours against a bike to fill his sheet if you know what i mean.

Fixing a speedo cable is a very easy task. Unscrew the bottom of the cable and see if the inner is broken (they always brake at the bottom). Order an new inner, but it usually goes back in from the top, just oil it when you put it back in.

I am sure if you ask there will be who could help you out.

Logic would say to start with the cable. Take the bottom end off the drive unit by unscrewing it. If the piece of cable inner that comes out (give it a pull) is shorter than the outer, or less obviously if it has no square drive end on both ends of the inner, then the cable is broken. If the cable is broken, you can order another online, or from any Suzuki dealer. Alternatively you can have it repaired at E. Parrot and Son who are at Barbadoes street, and are the only rotational cable manufacturer/repair located in Christchurch that I know of.

No you don't, it unscrews from the drive unit without removing the wheel, once the cable is off you will be able to drop the inner out of it and see if it is broken

I am working hard to get somewhere north warmer for winter. The choice at the moment is a great job in Ak or a low stress job in Ch and I dont like Ak.

When I get back we will have to do something about that.
