There has been alot of talk about speedo's and by how much they are out at certain speeds and was wondering if there are any cops out there that will be willing to come to a kb track day event and "check" peoples speedo's for them by either following us around on a certified speedo or using the laser to check it for us. That way we dont have to wait till we get pulled over for speeding etc etc etc.

When I lived in Christchurch, I had several vehicles calibrated at the local "Instrument Repairers." They had a set of two rollers (similar to the brake testing machines) that drove the vehicles wheel(s) at designated speeds and the resulting speedo readings were noted, and if necessary the instrument was re-calibrated before you got a calibration certificate.

This is why I enjoy those speed trailers :devil2:Yeah, but the only ones I've come across lately were parked outside schools at 8.30am... okay for checking 50k, but even I draw the line at checking 70k or 100k in those circumstances.

Scorpygirl and I have seen them there on some of our visits to Christchurch in the past couple of years.
Sniper, I don't know if you remember back to the the days of the seperate Ministry Of Transport (with the Black and White cars,) but there was a Traffic Cop in Amberley, who gave his wife a ticket for exceeding 50kph in the town. I would imagine that he got Hot Tongue and Cold Shoulder for the next 12 months.

Just get hold of a GPS unit (or an Ipaq with a GPS sleeve). I've calibrated all mine cars and bikes (The alfa toy turned out to be 15 kph SLOW at an indicated 100kph EEEKKK. Good thing I found that out. ) 17inch wheels instead of 16 inch I suspect is the reason

Would be happy to do it at some stage (at Pukekohe) but probably wont be able to make it to Pukekohe on the 10th... am currently in the USA having a holiday!
My police bike has a calibrated speedo and I can get a laser so either way, should be able to do something. Just a matter of working out a good date.

GPS is the way to go. It is 100% accurate and you can easily attach one to your handlebars with some tape. GPS will let you test your speedo at various speeds quickly and accurately.

I want to do the same with mine.. I'm just gonna bug someone with a GPS unit to either run parallel or attach it to my bike and just sit at 100kph for a couple of mins and it'll tell you

Until the day you look at your speedo, check what the readout on the trailer is and think "Damn, my speedo reads WAY too slow"
And then look in the mirror and realise the trailer is giving a reading of the great big truck slowing down about 50 metres behind you......

It seems that they've limited the readout on them.
To prevent record attempts.

Have used them a couple of times, but how accurate are they? Never been sure enough to trust it. Have used the 5k speedo test on the southern, but can you be sure that if your odometer is accurate that your speedometer is too?

Right on WRT, they'd be linked together and it's normally something like wheels or tyres that throws it out?

You can't; odometers are usually not too inaccurate, whereas speedos (as standard) are usually a few percent optomistic.

If anybody wants to "calibrate" their speedos (note the deliberate non-use of a capital s), they're welcome to borrow my GPS.

Excuse me sir, but if "speedos" is a contraction of speedometers, should it have an apostrophe placed before the final s?

But even if you discover your speedo is out, how do you adjust it so that it's right?

A Sigma 800 is the way to go. About 50 bucks. Clips on/off to your handlebars. Size 1.5" x 1.5". Reads off a tiny magnet araldited to your front rim. Rig the pick-up sensor to within 5mm of the spinning magnet. Dial in your wheel diameter to set. Reads to 300kph. Accurate to 1 kph. Get 'em from pushbike shops.
