I recently brought a dual-sport and I wana do some light off road riding. But I don't want to travel a distance. So my question is where 'legally' am I allowed to ride my bike, as in beaches, parks, random fields, school fields, etc. I haven't found any confirming info an this. I am based in auckland, north shore, but this could apply anywhere I assume.

Got a golf course handy? :devil2:

Beaches are treated as roads I understand. School grounds, parks, etc should be a no-go except for absolute beginners who will not be ripping up the grass.
If you use random fields those cracks you hear above the sound of the engine may be bullets.

There may be a local place that bikes go, ask your bike shop - or KB? Oh wait...

as above beaches are treated as roads, most reserves will have signs so no motorized vehicles,

private land is just that, private, ask first,

around auckland you may struggle away from the bike parks, however there are a lot of trail rides on tho, look on silverbullet.co.nz

Bit stuck for choice up that way, one of the reasons I left. You may have to go further afield to find somewhere suitable. Pakiri and tomarata used to be good, but from what I hear, even those places are harder to access these days.MOVE.

If you want to do easy trail rides (very do-able on a 250) do as Scott suggests, look on Silver Bullet for farm rides.
Other places locally are:
Ararimu valley road near Riverhead, there is a wide berm that gets used by 4x4 and gives you a couple of kms of play space just don't be a prat.
The Sandpit at Woodhill near Helensville, sand based off road motorcycle park, have decent tyres on.....
Muriwai beach is rideable from Wilson road in the north to Muriwai village, obey the road rules and be able to unstick your bike from soft sand!

Lots of gravel roads between Riverhead and Warkworth or look up Northern Gravel riders on facebook, they organise lots of easy stuff.
