View Full Version : Road rage incident

So I had my first experience in road rage after coming back to riding in NZ after may years off. I was coming home from work from welly to Kapiti and I was in the right lane sitting behind a silver/gray Hilux doing 95K ish and I pulled left and over took him after waiting a few K's for him to pull over.

He didnt seem to like the over take apparently. and came after me. I was in the right lane a 100 meters or so ahead of him, He pulled next to me in the left lane and started to slowly move right, INTO MY LANE. I did the wrong thing and flipped him off, he then looked right at me and pulled hard right into my lane. I had to brake or I would be dead in the cheese cutters.

So I thought to my self, what a nutter and I thought it was over, not! we continued to drive through Pukerua Bay, he in front of me , me following at a 2-3 sec distance back. after Pukerua Bay he decides to pull into the first Scenic look out going down the hill after Pukerua Bay. I thought OK he is going to think over what he did, nope he then pulled back into traffic about 4 or 5 cars back. Once we got to Mcays crossing he passed those cars and got behind me and sat there through Raumati south flats. I am not thinking OK this is kind of scary. I decided to turn off and Raumati south and see if he would follow me and if he did I would just head to the police station.

He didnt follow, thank god. I got home and told a friend about it and he said I should have called *555 I didnt think of it at the time but should have. I went to the police website and filled out a "report a bad driver" and gave them ALL details.

Interesting thing was he has his website printed across the back of his truck, maybe that's why he got behind me lol

too bad I remembered it and gave it to the police with his rego Mr jsroofing.co.nz based on SH1 just across from ZIP plumbing in Kapiti.

if you come across this guy hes a nutter, brown hair, clean cut guy in his later 20's it looks like.

So where's the rage? It sounds like nothing really happened apart from you giving him the finger and him following you!

When I opened this thread I was expecting something juicy with punches thrown :bash: etc!

I'm assuming there were two lanes going in your direction, and you just used the left of those two lanes? If not, it was an undertake as someone else as said (you can't "overtake" on the left in a single lane). Perhaps the driver pulled over to call *555 on you ...

However that doesn't excuse someone deliberately trying to move into your lane when they know you are there, creating a further danger. Very scary.

yes I under took him, as I would do to any fast lane camper going under the speed limit

two or more lanes on your side of the road ..........................
I was in the right lane a 100 meters or so ahead of him, He pulled next to me in the left lane and started to slowly move right, INTO MY LANE should cause no problem if the two lanes were on your side of the road ie there was another marked lane for traffic approaching from the opposite direction. But flipping him off was mostly likely the cause :nono:

You did not "undertake " him ...

If you were in the left hand lane doing 100ks then you were perfectly within your rights . if he was doing 95 ks in the outside lane, then that's his problem.

Other posters - Show me a rule or road code section that says if someone is doing 95ks in the right hand lane you can't do 100ks in the left hand lane ...

If that rule exists, then someone sitting at 30ks in the right hand lane will hold up all the traffic in the left hand lane as the MUST stay behind that car - clearly that's ridiculous ..

Hmm, never fun to have something like that happen... but flipping people off is sometimes a very bad idea if you can't get out of the way quick sharp. I like to think that fuckers that drive like that and put our lives at risk will meet misfortune sooner or later. Clearly not a very healthy individual to be behaving like that... the reason I used the over take ( or under take as it should have been worded) was because it was a 2 lane road each way, I moved left to get past him and then moved back into the right lane to get past a car that was very slow in the left lane. so in my mind I over took him. sorry for my miss wording.

sorry for my lack of illustration skills lol

[QUOTE]

That was awesome and sums up the whole road rage cycle. Its one thing to be cut off but if you then engage in words or fisticuffs expect it to go south from there.
Was walking through town yesterday, metres from police station. A cyclist is wobbling along so slow she is nearly stopped, a young lady in mini behind her indicates then pulls into space about a bike length in front of cyclist.
Rude but not dangerous as cyclist so slow she couldn't possibly hit her. Cyclist proceeds to nut off, women in car doesn't even register either event lol. Cyclist looks at me and smiles in an effort for some kind of sympathy vindication, give her the yeah right look and resist the urge to tell her to harden up.

As for original poster, nothing wrong with overtaking in a separate lane as this is NZ not the UK.
The other guy did use his car as a weapon though and they should prosecute, it might mean you get done for an offensive gesture perhaps...

You shouldn't really expect anything in a civilised society to end in violence. Unless it's now ok to just punch someone in the face for having a different point of view? Someone over/undertook you - put your tiny penis away and get over it - no need to swerve or try to
Kill someone for wanting to go faster than you think they should is there?

I read this thread and can't help but think - some people need a dictionary!

Overtake: to pass another vehicle
Undertake: to take upon oneself, as a task, performance, etc.

You can overtake on the left, you can overtake on the right, you can overtake legally and you can overtake illegally.
Passing a car on its left illegally would be correctly described as overtaking.

From what I read on the first post the OP described a legal overtake on the left (legal because he was in a separate lane).
To be fair he did undertake the task of passing the other vehicle, but that doesn't mean that he was undertaking the other vehicle.

yup I fully accept that it was wrong if me to flip him off and as an afterthought, he was already moving into my lane before I flipped him, so the flip made him really swerve hard into my lane and try to pinch me.

so it was maybe the flip that caused him to make the aggressive maneuver, maybe. who knows he could very well have done it anyway, we will never know

I wouldn't listen to half the choir boys on here man. Only on KB would you find a bunch of people saying you went to far pulling the fingers at some dude deliberately trying to use his vehicle to intimidate or hurt you (this was the reason you flipped him off from your account even. You made that clear in the first post (along with the fact there was more than one lane, some people are just a bit special)).

In which countries specifically is it a legal term?
And I don't mean a term in law referring to what an undertaker does.
That wiki page is pretty shoddy with very little in the references provided to back up what it claims and none to back up the use of the term "undertaking".

Just get past and forget about it. Agreed he was dangerous for doing what he did. Ring up his boss and complain about the driving - or drunken swerving. At the end of the day if they don't wanna be passed, they shoudln't fuck about.

As hilariously slow as 650 singles are, they'll still all easily outpace a Hilux from a 100km/h roll on.

This whole incident could have been avoided by simply travelling faster before, during and after the overtaking manoeuvre.

I'd been pootling around on a GN for a few days (giggles, actually) and then jumped on my Freewind. It felt like shit off a stick. I would probably kill myself if I rode the GN and then something quick.

But yep, unless packing enormous panniers and surrounded by oversize police vehicles, I'd have farked off out of there sharpish. I'd rather have some explaining to do than someone else have some real undertaking to do.

If you're carefull you can slip past a couple more cars as you come to the top of the hill, a wee bit cheeky but it's worth putting a buffer between yourself and dicks like this, road rage can cause people to do frighteningly stupid things and there's no way of knowing what he might have done next. Alternatively you could've turned off at Pukerua bay and stopped at the Harley shop, Even if he followed you I bet he wouldn't stop there for a confrontation :msn-wink: The police will tell you to pull over and let the aggressive driver go by but this doesn't always work out well, my wife was riding the same bit of road last year, she came through the Plimmerton roundabout in the left lane and accelerated past a slower car in the right, He decided to be a dick and started chasing her, tailgating etc so she did the 'right' thing and pulled completely off the road on the straight after the weigh station and came to a stop. The idiot in the car followed her off the road and rammed her, knocking the bike and her over into the grass. She was stopped FFS! No damage or injury but only by luck. Police called to the scene and gave the driver a lecture but didn't take it further because there were no witnesses. Lucky for him the police got there before I did!

Outfuckingstanding!, finally someone on this thread that gets how you stop the retards: you educate them with the only language that works, violence/intimidation they cannot match.

My first and immediate response is retaliation, shithead in hilux (lets face it, he's not getting away unless you are on an FXR) gets followed till he stops then filled in:bash:. Never back down, never run away and always carry a big stick!.

Yeah that report a bad driver shit just sends a letter out, asking them to play nice on the roads. Or that's my understanding of it.

Cunts are ginna be cunts. I had some knob tail gate me last night, slowed down to 20km/h (50km/h zone) still hugging my arse, couldn't quite get the hint lol. Had I not have my baby in the back I would have been very tempted to do an emergency brake as the road can get busy.....

So what happens when you try that without baby in car and get spun into other traffic and involve someone elses baby???
Nothing more hypocritical than those baby on board signs, people think they are a license to drive slow and cause accidents.
I don't understand people who play the brake pedal dance, the person behind obviously doesn't give a thought to safety and jamming on the brake seems like a good idea???
I've been run over while stopped waiting to turn, it was because the other driver wasn't paying attention. Was nervous for awhile about tailgaters then blanked it out as the risk is greater from your own distraction of worrying about it.
Same in the truck when getting worked up about blind overtakers etc, the worthless experience of calling *555 and blood pressure just increases own risk levels and job mistakes. Found the Darwin method of letting them carry on with their 'trip' more effective. Concentrate on own driving and don't worry about others just be aware of whats happening and drive/ride accordingly.

I loathe fucking baby on board signs and I agree, I dislike people who drive around at 30km/h because they have a baby onboard.

But why the does some cunt need to tailgate me because I'm doing fucking 50-60km/h in a 50km/h zone.

But you're right I guess, not worth the hassle, might just crawl to a stop next time. Safety first and all that shit.

It's amazing how people will happily crawl along below the speed limit to annoy a driver annoying them rather than taking 3 seconds to indicate left, slow down and pull over. Let the tail gater past, carry on at the speed limit.

If your ego is too big to let you pull over then speed up.

I very rarely get over taken, rather I allow vehicles past. If a car catches up behind me, they obviously want to go faster, so I let them past, the only time I've ever been tail gated has been in a queue of traffic. Make them overtake you. Job done.

As for baby on board signs. They are great! I just know there are at least 20 Asian children employed to make them. I was going to T-bone a car the other day, but I saw the baby on board sign so I braked instead. Saved the babies life

I agree when people are below the speed limit, was driving to Invers the other day and some old knob in a ute was doing 70km/h, couldn't give a fuck about the 6-8 cars behind him.

If someone is tailgating me on the open road, I tend to pull over and let them go, not worth the hassle at high speeds.

But saying that, most of the tailgating I've experienced has been around town in heavyish traffic. I don't know what they want me to do? pull over so they can kiss the arse of the person in front of me?

Did that one time and turned out it was a cop car! in UK going from a 30mph to 60mph zone at night, he was tailgating and high beaming me.
After asking me why I was going so slow he was taken aback when I said because your tailgating and highbeaming me you fool, wanted you to pass me. Looked at his lights and didn't disagree, said he would check at station up road.
For that bit of wisdom I got breathylised, man did his eyes light up when I said yes I'd been drinking, forgot I had to pick the missus up from work.
Was under the limit of course and he couldn't wait to slink away after that...
