View Full Version : Auckland: ATNR Junior (Auckland Thursday Night Ride- Junior)
Juniper
27th March 2014, 08:40
So this ride is in conjunction with the ATNR (Auckland Thursday Night Ride) (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/33348-ATNR-(Auckland-Thursday-night-ride)-Discussion-thread/page566) but aimed at Learner riders/ Slower riders/ 250 Riders. We try to keep to the pace of the slower riders so that no one gets left out or behind. Big kids are more than welcome if you would like a relaxing ride or to pass some riding skills onto the more learner ones in the group. The ride takes about 1-1/2hours and is about 75-80km long.
Where: Mobil Petrol Station on Oteha Valley Road Click for Google Maps Link (https://www.google.co.nz/maps/place/PSL+Mobil+Oteha+Valley/@-36.716959,174.714694,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x6d0d3ba36ced47e1:0x6ba97 ce0daec05bc)
(https://www.google.co.nz/maps/place/PSL+Mobil+Oteha+Valley/@-36.716959,174.714694,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x6d0d3ba36ced47e1:0x6ba97 ce0daec05bc)
When: Leave 6.45-7pm in summer and 6.30-6.45 in winter (to avoid riding in too much dark) 1-1/2hr ride
Route: A few twisties, a few straights, a few nice curves. Sometimes changes. ;) about 75-80km long. Finish up at BAR AFRICA Cnr of William Pikering Dr and Omega Place, Albany (https://www.google.co.nz/maps/place/Bar+Africa/@-36.753569,174.70698,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m2!3m1!1s0x6d0d395f318d70e7:0xea990 f1cfaad60ef).
Structure: The Lead and TEC (Tail End Charlie) are comparatively experienced riders who know the route well. No one goes in front or behind these people. If the group stretches out we wait at intersections (where safe) to regroup as a whole. We ride in staggered formation.
Why: Just cause... Kids like to ride too (Not referring to age, all ages welcome lol)
I started this ride with a few L riders a while ago because I wanted to ride on Thursdays and then catch up with the others at the pub, but felt really bad holding the more experienced riders up on the corners. It seems to have grown and we would love to see new faces, even if I cannot make it.
:ride:

Disclaimer: I am NOT a teacher or an experienced rider. Just a person who likes to ride with other similar paced riders. Any advice or tips I give are stuff that I've picked up along the way from places/groups like NASS (http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php/77111-North-Auckland-Street-Skills-NASS/page405), advice I picked up on the L's rides (Thank you Maha and Mom), and other experienced riders that have mentored me along the way. I firmly believe that there is no absolute right way to ride, other than staying on your bike, so take all the advice you get and see what works for you.
You participate on this ride at your own risk. I will not be held accountable for anyone's actions, to/from or during the ride.. Anyone who is caught endangering or intimidating others by their actions will be asked to leave the ride and refused entry to forthcoming rides! This is a learner supportive ride, not a show off loose cannon ride.
I will not be responsible for people ending up god knows where due to not listening to instructions nor the TEC system failing. If the group stretches out we wait on corners to regroup as a whole.

Hi all,
I've only just got my Learner's a week and a half ago and while I've ridden around my local area a little since, I am obviously very new and quite inexperienced. I've hit 80km/h on Fred Taylor Drive near westgate a few times but haven't been on the motorway yet.
I was just wondering if it'd be too soon for me to join you guys on a ride this thursday. Should I ride around solo a little longer before attempting a group ride?
cheers

Sweet, there should be a few of us dedicated ones lol.
I can promise you that the winter riding will be aimed at the really learner group. Mainly cause I'm as blind as a bat at night so wont be going any sort of fast at all. Need to work on my night riding too. Been a bit scared of late.

Most of Scenic Drive is good at the moment. However there's a stretch of about 5kms that's rubbish new seal. Friends had to strip all 4 car brakes after going over that road.

Hey sorry about that.
Honestly?
I felt out of my depth riding with you guys (I still consider myself very much a learner rider, dispite having my full) and was very uncomfortable with my lack of skill taking corners like that going at those speeds. I am a very slow and sedate rider, and was expecting a whole bunch of leaner riders on 250s that I could just pottle along with. Definitely need to up my confidence and skill levels, so I'm looking forward to attending NASS next week on Wednesday.
Love your bike by the way! (Looks even better in person)

Hey dude we're really sorry about that, that's not what ATNRJ was started for. As I could see you behind me I thought you were ok, but when we didnt see you after the intersection we all panicked and started checking everywhere for you.
Luke said you were riding perfectly fine so we were really confused about why you left, that's what the TEC is for to make sure everyone is ok. And the Lead always stops at intersections to check that he can see all riders behind him.
We made the wrong assumption after seeing your awesome bike. It's not a mistake we will make again, I will go back to doing my original ATNRJ riding brief no matter which bike turns up.
Always ride your own ride. Please do feel free to come along next week, we are actually a bunch of supportive riders as we have all been in your shoes before, and that's why I started ATNRJ.
Personally in the past I have ended up in tears after having the same thing done to me, so you have no idea how bad I feel about this.
I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday.

Prehaps carry on with the ride til you catch up and let someone know you're leaving first, might be helpful.
Anyway nice work, ride your own ride.
Yeah sorry about that, I know I should have, and I felt like a dick for just turning off, but I felt that I tried to keep up, I probably would have crashed, so I made a decision to slow down, and turn off.

Hey thanks so much Juniper!
Am very sorry for just turning off, but I really did feel the pressure to keep up, and just didn't feel good about taking anymore corners going at a speed above my skill level.
I was actually in a situation like that when I lived in Hamilton a year ago on my Ninja. I had joined a group of local riders to go for a ride around rural Hamilton back roads, and they were going at a pace that was too much for me to handle, long story short, I almost didn't mange to negotiate a turn and nearly came off going 100kph.......... Needless to say, It scared the crap out of me!
From then on, I said to myself "Don't try and be a macho idiot and try to ride beyond your abilities and experience levels"
Since then, I've done quite a bit of reading about riding and the mental, and emotional side of things, and how we are all susceptible to peer pressure somewhat (Not a good thing when biking!) and I also attended and Ride safe bronze course and have since learned to try and not to put too much pressure on myself, because I know that if I do that it will lead to me having an accident sooner or later.
Anyway, I do hope you guys enjoyed the ride, and it was a pleasure to meet you all, you're certainly a warm and friendly bunch, with some sweet skills and bikes to match!

FORGIVENESS PLEASE! :)

That's a problem with joining a group ride.
Everyone learns at a different pace and have varying skill levels.
You should go along next week, but ride at the level/speed that YOU feel comfortable with
The others will follow
Put yourself behind the leader, great place to see what to look for and avoid.
Let someone Rider in charge (RIC) or Tail End Charlie (TEC) know if you want to pull out
If your really unsure, tell the TEC that you will follow but may fall behind or stop and not to worry about you BEFORE you start.
Is a great way to observe the riders in front and you can pull out no worries
You should go along next week, you will improve and look back in a few months at your improvement.

Bugger, looks like I missed out on a good ride. Didn't know this was still a thing.
I'll have to remember to visit KB more often so I don't miss out.

Just out of curiosity, is this still happening? Just got my lisense and sounds like something I'd be keen on :)

Hey, It hasent been running in a while mainly due to weather and being winter. But now the sun is lasting longer in the evening we might start again.
There is NASS though that would be good if you have just got your licence. It starts out with an open road ride and then we practice slow speed carpark skills.
There is a Kiwibiker page for NASS but we have now moved to Facebook. Check us out here: https://www.facebook.com/NassNZ
