Actually, as I am about to start building a race bike out of a current road bike, is there anything wrong with leaving the original tail light in? It is switched....

Ah, true.... I'm going to do something creative to make it look original though ;)
Otherwise there will be a ruddy great gap where the tail light used to be.

What about just taping, or painting, or some other thing, over the outer edges until it is the correct size?

Surely it would then be legal?

Taping would be acceptable.BUT the rule states LED.

they have masking tape in the airforce that can cover a malaysian airliner at 600mph, could he use some to make the tail light smaller then?
