Well, blow me down - despite all of our ranting, raving and frothing at the mouth here on Kiwibiker - NZ ranks as the most socially advanced country. Just whose fault is that then?
http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/9900943/NZ-most-socially-advanced-country
The SPI defined social progress as: "The capacity of a society to meet the basic human needs of its citizens, establish the building blocks that allow citizens and communities to enhance and sustain the quality of their lives, and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential."

Well fuck off back to that wonderful country you came from then ...
But seriously (and don't take that random reaction personally Chris .. just as I know you didn't really mean it ...) I'm not surprised at all. This country remains the best place in this fucked up world to live ...

18th in the Basic Human Needs category eh. Guess that's why we're 25th in terms of GDP.

Someone must have held the graph the wrong way around!
How they hell does anyone measure that?
In all seriousness though, I am very happy that I live here and not still in the UK. I often come accross fellas that have not lived elsewhere in the world. So many things are taken for granted her that are either not available or dont happen anywhere else.
NZ.......the worlds best kept secret!

What's wrong with the UK? Too many ragheads and niggers? Or just too expensive?

Only the lumpy bits have not been developed for Council estates & they get rained on most of the time. The rest of the time it's snowing.

We should probably put them in special camps, like the Aussies do.
Acoustically isolated ones.
Until they can stump up with the airfare back to where they came from.

You're joking right. NZ is a total rip off for day to day stuff. All of the items I mentioned are at least double the price I pay here even after the exchange rate is added in. A few years ago when the US dollar was stronger the NZ prices were not as noticeable but with an exchange rate close to 85 cents you really feel the hit in your pocket when visiting NZ. The research is from my personal observations. I was in NZ twice last year, Jan and Oct.

Geeze Guys, i think you're being a little hard on Godzone. Am a born and bred Kiwi and have experienced living in several other countries and still believe we have the best place in the world to live. Sure, some things are expensive compared to other countries but you have to remember that our population is extremely small compared to them and our geographical location also adds to the costs. This is a price worth paying for the lifestyles we enjoy.
Now if we could only cut down the bureaucracy that is starting to choke us it would be almost perfect.

I think you will find it depends on what part of the states you are.
I was in LA last September and most things were the same or a bit more.
But if you look at eating out it's the same price but the food tasted like shit and don't get me started on find a decent coffee.
Mobile data was so fucking slow, everyone expected a tip even if the service was shit, they put tax (and god knows how many or much it is) on after you look at the price, but you just keep on telling us how good it is there and we'll stay here were we know it is better.

ok consider this. Lets say you dragged your sorry arse overseas 10 odd years ago.
meanwhile here I think we've all noticed how much the shopping bill has gone up & power & other general services. The grocery cartels are pushing up prices of fresh food insanely whilst paying the same or less than they did for it 20 years ago (go ask a produce farmer if you can find one who hasn't lost he will to live).
Anyway lets say this aforementioned miserable bstd comes home for a visit, it would be more of a shock. I can see why Jason makes that statement. Heck there have been quite a few articles in the slightly off mainstream media about it.
Anyways I'd still rather live here.

Have any of you tried the "bread", "cheese" and "milk" that is so much cheaper in the states? I'm pretty sure there's a good reason it's priced so much lower!
Not to say that it isn't expensive here, but what's available at your average store is definitely a far higher quality.

It's fuck all to do with economies of scale, not much more to do with transport costs.
It's simply the difference between the bargaining power of a very large economy and a very small one. Where items sold in the US are supplied from the same source the costs are typically 160% dearer in NZ, and while items from different sources may be of slightly different inherent value, (and in my experience there's a lot of shit dumped on the NZ market) the price difference is pretty much the same.
Blame who you like, but NZ, along with many similarly sized countries are effectively subsidising the US consumers in particular, and every other large economy in general. And short of some very clever trade agreements with other affected countries to form a trading bloc with some clout I don't see any way you can change it.

Yes mate that about sums it up. You get a real shock when you get off the plane, drive down the road to the nearest pub away from the airport and pay $10 for 2 regular tap beers .
In my opinion unless you have spent a significant amount of time living overseas you will never know just how expensive NZ really is.

In Dom yesterday , Nz about 5th highest food costs for developed countries. 14% of household income. Compared to 7% in US. Strangely Aussie was higher. Japan etc were higher but they subsidise farming

Can't speak for anyone else, But our grocery outlay each week for a family of four in Aus is half of what we paid in NZ.
Food isn't as flavorsome though. (lamb is a sad joke).
Personally I consider the figures are skewed purely because so many people when they are looking for work can skip over the ditch and get a job.
