Have you ever looked at something and thought, "I have to have that!" ???
I just did.
I usually buy Shoei helmets with some sort of graphic design on them, but when I brought my last one a couple of years ago, none of the graphics did anything for me, so I just brought a plain blue one.
But yesterday I saw an ad in Two Wheels for the new Shoei XR1000 Diabolic and just had to have it. And it's at a really reasonable price - a good $300-$400 cheaper than I expected.

Very pretty. Hope your leathers match though...
So how much *did* it cost then?

I've got black & white Tribal Hein Gericke leathers, so it happens that it will go very nicely. :)
It hasn't cost me anything yet, because they're not in the country until the end of the month. They're $799 RRP but I haven't yet heard how much I might be able to get it for yet. ;)
My jacket doesn't have the blue on it:

Indeed. Did you get the Hein Gherkin leathers in NZ, or were they the result of an overseas trip? I haven't seen any shops here selling them.

Your main problem will be the NZ importer actually bringing one in. I got so pissed off one time trying to arrange for a new shoei that I got the importer to fax me a list of every helmet they had in stock so I could pick one of that list. Every other model I tried to get they didn't have.
You're right thou it does look very nice.

yeah Whites suck(if that's who you're talking about.) they have the sole nz distribution rights for shoei. I bought a shoei & the rubber on the buckle came off within a month & when I tracked it back to them for a replacement part they said (after 4 weeks) "sorry it's considered a safety related item, therefore not covered by warranty or available separately". I'm sure You can guess their reply to a request for a replacement helmet then...
buy it off the net for cheaper, i never buy hardly anything here now out of principle because of the rip off distributors stifling competition and the supply chain all clipping the ticket. get it off ebay.

If it wasn't for Shoei I wouldn't be able to ride a motorbike (65cm cranium). The bad news is any colour as long as it's black.
These Aussie spec lids are magnificent! I'll bet dollars to donuts they don't do XXL...

Yeah, have a look on ebay or maybe buy from auzzie.
I got some boots and my mate got a helmet from www.motorcycle-accessories.com.au and they were pretty good. Also alot cheaper than any place in new zealand.

Slim: snap!! I saw the ad too, and am in the process of making enquiries via a mate who works at a bike shop. I was almost at the stage of buying a plain XR1000 (was going to get one with your graphics mangell6, but Hamish reckons my ears won't stick on). But at the weekend I too bought Two Wheels, and thought exactly as you.
Thanks for the info re delivery date - will keep you posted.
750Y I hope you're wrong about them maybe not bringing them in.....watch this space.

they hopefully will bring them in although I recall them not bringing in the X-ceed II because of the landed retail price but that shouldn't apply this time as the XR1000 is less than the flashest one. I love shoei's because they fit my head good. Have had 2 Xceed's which have been sweet.

Motomail have already been contacted and supplied us with a RRP, so I took that to mean they will be bringing them in.
Lynda - wonder if we'd get an even better deal for ordering two???
Indiana - whether you're a learner or been motorcycling for years, it doesn't change the value of your head. I see no problems spending $600-$700 on a quality helmet because my head's worth more to me than that.
K14 - no sign of this helmet on the Aussie site you posted ... yet. I don't know about others, but I can't see my way to buying a second hand lid at all. Part of a helmets effectiveness is actually how the foam lining molds to your head & a used helmet is going to be pre-molded to someone elses head.

My last Shoei cost around $800. I ended up being VERY glad I spent the money on a good one. When a high end Shoei gets the shell cracked and has deep scratches over it I wouldn't like to think what would happen if I'd used something else. The hit was hard enough I lost 45 minutes that I have no recollection of, at the time I didn't know who I was, what I was doing or where I was going to/coming from.
I agree with Slim that regardless of your experience or bike, high quailty riding gear is always a good idea.

Slim: let's keep in touch about this. I'll pm you. I may be able to get a deal through a mate, but am happy to look at Motomail if we can get a better deal there.

Awesome looking helmet!
I favour that artistic design over the common "dungeons & dragons" type look you see so often.
Enjoy the look...

Before you bag the Shoei distributor too much, just be aware that its not always there fault. You mhave to accept that New Zealand is such a small market that we are pretty low on the pecking order for some of these factories. US MX gear like Fox Racing is another example. The distributor may place an order for what they feel they may be able to sell. How many new Shoeis would you sell in New Zealand, be less than 100 wouldn't it? You then try and split this figure between all the different sizes and colours and models. Youre talking maybe 2-3 helmets in a certain colour, model, size. Then the factory needs to have all the full range available when you order, are they going to make 2 or 3 helmets just for NZ? no, they'll send what they have so again you may miss out.
Good to see the prices are reasonable but with the NZ$ around 0.67c US so they should as it wasn't that long ago it was around 0.45c US thats a hell of a percentage difference isn't it? Theres no way a top Arai or Shoei should be around $1400 with the current exchange rate but sadly these prices don't seem to reflect the change in the NZ$.

have just had a look at http://www.customs.govt.nz/importers/private+importers/customs+charges.asp and motorcycle helmets have 17% duty on them
I have brought 4 helmets in from overseas and carried them with me and never been charged for one yet
its a lottery if ya do get charged but be wary of this figure just in case ya buy one via the net and then get pinged when it arrives in the mail.
I agree the shops are making some seroius dosh on mark up but hey it costs plenty to run a V8 Holden and have a holiday home
What?
28th January 2004, 05:17
You're right, Igor, they won't sting you for one helmet if you are carrying it. But they will tax you on mail order. It is to do with import duties versus the personal duty free allowance for travellers, plus tax does not apply to used goods. All anyone has to do is tell the man that their new helmet was used whilst on holiday.
