View Full Version : New car adverts

I've been taking notice for some time of new car advertising on TV.

And it is depressing me

Apart from Alfa it appears the pros of purchasing a new car now revolve around its electronics - blue tooth, wi-fi, touch screens, electronic lane management, park assist, auto rain censoring wipers, anal temperature reading etc etc.

Nary a word about 'performance' or similar - fark one Mitzi advert states 'it's just better' ..........

What's the world coming too?

Look out it will affect motorcycles soon, Honda 700 thingy is a example .......

Suzuki at least has a sporty ad with the Hyabusa morphing into the Kizashi. From personal experience of owning a Kizashi for nearly three years now, it truly is a sports sedan. But generally you are right, it's not PC to advertise performance these days, which is a shame.

Errr...Honda 700 thingy has...a storage area. And is economical. Doesn't even have ABS in NZ.

You're obviously talking about the latest top of the range BMW / Kwaka / Suzuki / Triumph / Ducati / Aprilia etc with oodles of traction control / power modes etc I hear some of them even have heated grips / seats / stereos (Goldwings, Harleys) electric windscreens and so on.

Shocking state of affairs.

The car industry is facing a potential future crisis. Young people today, especially city dwellers are less and less likely to purchase a car. This obviously doesn't apply to New Zealand, as we have shit public transport (and mostly love cars), but otherwise, the car is seen as taking up expensive space, cost of maintenance and if you're driving you can't be fiddling with Facebook/whatever (ok, some don't let that stop them).

Anyway, to appeal to new buyers, this is the track that has been taken. Wifi, bluetooth, a more connected car fitting in with your life style.

But it does, the percentage of licence holders amongst 20yr olds is dropping heaps.

And it's nothing to do with bling, the whole process is apparently just see as too difficult. And nor is the lack of public transport seen as a problem, they expect their parents and friends to ferry them around.

My father bought a brand new MG1100 in Sept 1964. Went to pick it up about 5pm. At 7.30 we thought mum and dad had taken it for a decent ride. Turns out they were still at the dealers trying to get the wipers to work.

Okay, it may be a couple hundy kilowatts short but it handles like a sports car and show it the twisties and you better be on the ball if you want to get ahead of it. It's a very fast car point to point and will be happy when others are falling off the corners. But then I have owned it for nearly three years and know how to get the best out of it. The really fun bit is at the gas station when you see the huge difference between a 2.4lt four and a 5lt V8. ..

All manufacturers have a petrol-head or three within the company who would love to build a proper sports car. Scale of operations and the competitive market mean that most have to concentrate on cars for the mass market. However, witness ToySubaru and the GT86/BRZ, shows what they can do when they get the green light.

More power to Lotus and the like!

And a 400km range.

Long trips could be a problem, but otherwise it should be more than enough range for most people. That 400km range is only for the flagship model though, the ones with the smaller battery packs have a range not that much greater than a modern sports bike.

Of course you're fucked if you wanted to go somewhere 600km away, that's suddenly a 2-day journey.

Oh and don't make the mistake of accidentally leaving the car unplugged for a couple of weeks, because that has a repair cost of literally $USD40,000.

Ridiculous as apparently this is a continuing issue even with the Model S. Such an easy fix, I have no idea why Tesla haven't addressed it. They're doing their absolute best to not draw any attention to this bricking problem, which means inadequate warnings to owners unfortunately.

edit: Actually a quit google search shows the Model S might not suffer from this problem as the Roadster did. I'm doing a bit more reading now.

I do keep up with much of the latest. The likes of Toyota Hyundai and Honda keep trying to tempt me by offering test drives. I admit that some have caught up to the Kizashi now but to get anything better would cost at least double the price and even more than that would only get me more power. Handling and bling are still at the top of the tree.

I am planning on getting it chipped shortly which will go some way to addressing that.

nek minnit they be adding an interior window wiper for next years model then...
Watch the crash rate rise with touch screen controls for stuff. Even in my 2001 Nissan for some reason the feckers made all the aircon switches same tiny size and smooth instead of the sensible big chunky controls in like a mitsi...

Just wait till there's a few more electrics on the road and more frequent fires, you know like at the moment how ipads and iphones batteries can just detonate themselves.
Instead of giggling at some numb nutrs in the fast lane whose radiator is starting to steam we'll be getting sprayed with lithium shrapnel when someones battery overheats.
Wonder how the batteries will cope with real world vibration long term as opposed to easy smooth round town roads that the likes of prius etc are usually doing.

Currently there' are about 6 Lithium based technologies and the batteries like Shorai use LiFePO4 which is inherently safe and why so many are being used in racing. It's been said that if petrol was just now being introduced it would be banned as a fuel for vehicles.

Imagine the lawsuits if such technology was to screw up. Once self drive is introduced it will possibly be another 10 years before the technology bugs are ironed out or it could be scrapped all together depending on the number of lawsuits.
Already being considered and tackled. In some states in the USA the cars have been granted a permit to be on the road, but with a human still present in case of issues occuring and they can take control.

One of the biggest industrys that could be changed would be stuff like long haul trucking. Trucks could run pretty much 24/7, stopping for gas or when the system raises a service alert.

to the point if it dies it could mean an excellent car mechanically is written off.

That will never happens since cars won't be able to pass emissions or safety testing. Cars should have more and more electronics added to them, especially things like ESC and other such things to lessen the risk of crashes. Drivers are so bad that they manage to crash into trains, so they need all the help they can get to keep "safe".

Drove it about 100m or so up the road, and said to my missus, "What do I do?!? I really don't like this!" Went a km or so down the road, sat in a car park for a few minutes, then drove back to the yard. The salesman bounces up, all excited and enthusiastic, "So - what did you think?!?"
