View Full Version : Bastard Street Triple would not start this morning!

It has not been started for a week but I thought I would take it for a WOF today in the hope of some decent autumn riding.
Key on, it does its little dance: needles sweep, lights come on, fuel pump whines, hit the button, turns over no fire. Turns over twice ... Gurrr Guurrrrr. nothing.
thought it might have been the clutch lockout or the sidestand lockout. Flicked the stand up, hold the clutch in.... same deal.
It doesnt "feel" like a flat battery: the lights do not go as dim as they do trying to start with a flat battery. I did put the battery on charge this morning and will try to start it tonight.
Suggestions as to what else to try?
09 Street Triple R with arrows lowboy and mapped to suit. ... and it went last week.

Plugs?
Just had a battery die on me, would light up turn over etc but just wouldn't crank over hard enough to start.

Done anything such as remove the tank since it last ran?

not a thing. Parked it (in the garage - it is pampered).
My thoughts are leaning towards the battery but I don't have another one to try it with. Will try and jump it off the car tonight.

Try holding a bit off throttle on while starting. That works on an adult sized triple displaying the same syptoms.
Alternatively you could contact triumph new zealand for some help.

Almost brought one of yours Ed... But was told if any water gets on the chip it's fucked (It's a dirt bike so quite likely).

I sell a lot to dirt bikes and the answer is really simple. As with any battery installation one should use a bit of electrical grease over the terminals, and with the Shorai, do the same across the charging port cover.
If it's likely to get dunked, as in a jetski for example, then you do need to waterproof them and most either seal around the terminals and port with silicon or put it in a plastic bag.
The biggest market for the batteries is to KTM dealers for some reason.

Might give it a try next time... Funnily enough It was a KTM dealer who talked me out of it, they did say about the waterproofing though.
Sorry for hijacking the thread for a minute :innocent:

Your Triple is the same year as mine and 4 or 5 years from a battery these days seems around par for the course. Depends on how often you use it as longer periods without use does cause sulphating. My favoured option would be the battery too. Interestingly, I correspond with a chap in the USA who has one and had a similar problem to yours. The dealer reckoned the existing battery was fine after testing but the problem persisted until the battery was changed and all was fine afterwards. Just didn't hold enough capacity for cranking amps compared with the lower load demand for lights and so on.

Lets hope it is just the battery! A friend of mine had similar symptoms on his Daytona 675, was all good and then all of a sudden just no start. Would crank over fine, all lights would work, but dead. Turned out the crank position sensor had had enough and decided to retire. Required a whole new stator. Fun times.
Fingers crossed a new battery solves your problem!

I will put it in the dealer newsletter for April, and explain what to do. Thanks.

If I have to replace it (and thinking about it some more, it is most likely to be the OEM battery that John Bloor whittled from a solid block of lead then painstakingly personally installed in my bike) then its five years old... so likely at the end of its life.
If I have to replace it I will definitely buy a Shorai.... sure there is a price difference but the weight saving is completely worthwhile.

Owl had ( has ? ) a triumph and one of your batteries caused him all sorts of grief.
OP should ask Owl before risking putting a Shorai in as from the sounds of it Shorai and Triumphs don't seem to play nice together.

I have a Shorai in my VFR. Its brilliant. Even if the VFR is less so.

Had the same thing with my ducati the other day, enough to turn it over but wouldn't fire up, until I gave it a quick charge and away it went.
Too much electronics these days, if the voltage drops a bit when the battery is in sub-optimal condition then computer says no.

Owl explained what happened in the Shorai thread. He has no issues now. Well worth looking at.

It's a real problem with the Rocket, as anymore than about 5 - 10% down and it's a no go.

Ducatis are notorious for not playing nicely without a fully charged battery.

Weeping and begging. Works for this, sometimes works when I want sex.......
The Honda was about a bloody year... and it desperately needs a tune..... sigh.

Had a similar issue with my speedy, turned out to be the clutch switch not engaging properly. Some contact cleaner sorted it out. Could be a place for you to look... Stupid things cant be bypassed as the ECU looks at them constantly...

Thanks everyone for your input. Pretty sure it is the battery at this point. On charge all day and it fired up straight away tonight.
The good news is I also have a spare battery because it is the same as the battery in my VFR. Street and Sport have a battery load tester so I wil get them to check it out but I think the question has been answered.
Which is good because I am skint at present.

What he said. Modern bikes and cars all alike these days.
If it helps, 9 year old battery in the CB900 still starts just fine. Even left for 7 weeks in 2011, started up like it was the previous day. Disgustingly reliable :shifty:

My BMW wins. Had it on it's side for some work (non-electrical). Sat upright for a while, then tried to start it, and it would only crank, no start. Left for rest of the day, no start. Overnight, nothing. Carted it off to the dealer to figure out what was wrong on Monday morning, they finally get the time to look at it Thurs/Fri, and it starts fine :pinch:

Nah, it's only to keep putting some nice fresh oil in... kinda like a constant oil change. I laugh now... but not when the oil light comes up, and I'm a long way from oil :brick:

Just a thought incase you still have problems. Just had to pull the starter button apart on my 08 Speed Triple because it left me stranded at the servo one morning refusing to start. I reckon it has been an intermitant problem for the last couple of years that I didnt recognise.
Just had to pull it apart and spray round some contact cleaner and it has been all good since.

I'd put money on it being battery. Battery doesn't have to be dead for mine not start. And I would say yours may be same, greedy and needy little farker that requires a lot of juice to fire - I readed somewhere once that if a battery can't supply around 13.5 volts at starting, then you're gonna have the roaw, roaw, pooooooooosh issue!
Alternatively you could contact triumph new zealand for some help.
