Somehow when the boys throw it away it's sorta deserved, y'know? Like we had it coming, if not for that particular incident then because of previous unpunished transgressions.

But when the girls fall it's cause for concern, nothing more.

Which is, of course exactly as it should be.

All the best, Shreks.

just got home from the hospital.... Kathy has just been put into a Thompson splint (traction) on her leg, so they can operate on it later today as well as her right arm...
her left leg is broken above & below the knee as well as the ankle, her right forearm is broken & her right ankle has a chipped bone & the ligaments have come away...
she is in good spirits & thanks you all for your prayers, thoughts & wishers

as she is being operated on today can you leave the visiting until Saturday at the earliest please I'll let you know what ward she is in

after talking with Kathy at the hospital about what happened..... her bike started to fish tail as she went into the corner.... she hit some lose gravel first & thought she could get it back under control until she looked at the barrier as she came through the corner....

her speed was between 80 & 85 kph....

until she looked at the barrier as she came through the corner...

A mistake, to be sure.

But why for the love of god are there barriers on the outside of corners, right where any mistake is going to end up, four wheeled or two?

Unless there's a cliff there what are they trying to protect?

hi guys saw Kathy, she sleep most of the day.... I got there last night just after 8pm, & only stayed a short time.... she said she felt wet so checked for her & found that the catheter was leaking, so she said for me to ring the nurse, so I pressed the buzzer 3 times but it did not work, Kathy said not that one the other one, it was the pain relief  they had changed the buttons... so after about 20 minutes it was time to go,

went back in about 10 this morning & she was rested a looking good, so we played with her new laptop :shifty: (so the accounts get done) lol... then left her to sleep about 1130

Kathy is feeling better than expected as they only plated the femur as her right arm had set well so they left it alone
also found the ankle was not broken after taking more x-rays so the prayers are working well, & her right ankle is also healing well & they will put a moon boot on later next week so that she can weight bear on it

she is in "ward 3 B" between 2:pm & 8pm, please keep the visits short & no more than two at a time, & no food of any sort " these are Kathy's wishers please respect them"

Kathy sends her love & thanks for all the prayers, best wishers & offers of help xoxoxo

gave lotsa  for all, then a few from me

cheers :apint:

for those that are trying to work out how, why etc...

Kathy has hit small rocks about the size of golf balls on the corner which caused the bike to start fish tailing & then target fixation took over just before she hit the barrier.... she was traveling between 80 & 85 kph ..... she hit the barrier near the road marker peg..... & one of her mates pointed out that she hadn't put barrier cream on that morning

Hard to see the pics from my phone, but looks like a gentle bend. I'm glad I have a bit of back ground in off road riding. Certainly helps learning to control a bike on some surprise gravel.

Tough lesson to learn but it looks like she has learnt rather than another KB member who will proclaim this crash was unavoidable....

The first pic shows the tail end of a very deceptive sweeping corner over the crest of a hill. No speed advisory that I recall ... but quite a few vehicles (cars and bikes) have come to grief on that corner. Some have been killed. Some with a dam sight more experience than Kathy.

"Surprise gravel" is one thing ... but golf ball sized rocks can misdirect the front wheel as it rolls off the rock ... getting you off your line rather quickly. No amount of off road riding is of help then.

It would be a tough call to say it was (or wasn't) avoidable. And anybody taking the same/similar line through that corner had a good chance of the same/similar end result. Regardless of rider experience ... speed ... or the bike being ridden.

Here's a link to the corner ...

It's a 75k curve, but it is one of the more deceiving curves between Dunedin and Alex. From Roxburgh you have lots of high speed curves and a few really tight ones. This is one of the in-between ones where you can't see the exit and the fact that it is quite a long curve doesn't help.

with all due respect to my Lady it probably was unavoidable... lack of taking all things into account etc... but as I was not with her when it happened I can only guess with what I saw on the day & today... but like you said a tough lesson to learn

Kathy's do'n great, they got a moon boot fitted on her today & put her in a wheel chair to see how she went...
still can't get out of bed on her own yet, a minor thing...
the boy is in the Army now doing his basic, he only found out on the week end as he was out in the field on ex...
so it just me, just had a hole heap of calls etc... about making sure I'm looking after myself.... cooked my 1st meal in 5 days hadn't even realised I'd not been eating, other than a sammie or crackers when I thought of it... so getting a bit of wild pork or venison & putting in the slow cooker for tomorrow night ... any way I don't think I'd miss a few kg's

Hells teeth man, that's shocking news. (Hardly ever check this forum these days). So pleased to hear Kathy is doing well despite significant injuries. Only missed her by one shift looking back too. Very unfortunate. Even with years of experience gravel on tarmac still sucks- very little chance of staying upright. My sincere condolences and best wishes for a full recovery.
