Hi KiwiBikers! Joined this forum after some punting around the internet. I've always thought bikes looked cool but never rode them on the open road - done some arsing about in paddocks and whatnot when I was younger. Two weeks ago I took a friends Suzuki Boulevard out for a spin, opened the throttle, almost shat myself, then decided it was time to start riding bikes.

Did my handling test last week and got my learner license this morning.

I'm new to NZ as well. I left the UK because I was bored with the rubbishy weather and some other "life" crap.

I haven't even got myself some wheels yet so I welcome any advice you might want to throw my way. Was thinking of getting something around the 250cc mark for commuting. I've had some advice from dealers suggesting I go for a larger (read 500cc) bike but I wonder if they are just trying to flog me a more expensive machine...

Some other interests include drum'n'bass, home brewing and archery.

Cheers!

Also, this

Welcome, welcome.

Pretty sure you 'Ride' a motorcycle ;)

250/500... Lets face it you'll be selling it in 18 months once you have your full and I tend to think you'll loose a whole lot more $ on the 500 come sale time. Consider how fat you are, im 100kg and my 250 easy pulls me up to the limit and maxes out around 130.

Gotta love a good home brew :drinknsin

Despite my love of beer I'm not that fat, about 80kgs. Interesting advice as it is literally the complete opposite of what I have heard from all the dealers in Whangarei, who seem to think a 500 will hold its value where a 250 will not.

This being one of the reasons I joined this forum - I prefer the advice of those not trying to sell me things. Thanks.

Forgot to say.... If its 2nd hand I think the 250 will hold value. I wouldn't suggest buying a new 1st bike you'll loose to much that could go into a cooler big boy bike later.

80kg IMO, is great for a 250.

Im new too so hopefully someone will chime in and confirm.

The fact that I ride around on a 2 stroke 250 most of the time now days is completely irrelevant

As I understand the manufacturer power-to-weight ratio asumes 90kgs for rider and gear so what you are saying makes sense. I take your point on buying new and don't like the idea of waving goodbye to about $1000 in value by simply registering it and driving it off the forecourt.

Care to explain why you ride the smaller one more?

And I'm looking to spend about $4000 factoring the cost of registering it. Looking for a sports bike as from what I have ridden so far I prefer the position. Speaking of registering the cost compared to a car is absolute arse gravy of the highest order. 6 months for a small car $291, 6 months for an up to 600cc bike $273. I smell politician logic.

Best answer would be because its the latest toy, that and the fact that My KTM950ADV struggles to climb the sand dunes I like to ride at the mo

Sports bike, hmm IMHO not the best for NZ roads but an SV650 or any 250 faired bike is about it (KLR650 would be my pick if your were looking for an do it all adventure bike though)

Best bike I could find to suit your spec http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-705053971.htm

I do like your way of thinking. My 2t is very much the go too bike for shenanigans & general yee ha.. SV650 is a great call. Prolly get one in the shed for Mrs Rossi at some point. KLR has similar performance to the Boulevard but more suspension & weight.

OP, the SV650 is well worth further investigation.

Or a DRZ 400...

Howdy Hash.

I'm 85kg, 6ft3 (190cm), and ride an 07 Ninja 250. Last of the old shape, mine is like this (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-681950828.htm) but red. Another (http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/motorbikes/motorbikes/sports/auction-705459356.htm) with a top box.

They sound grouse (subjective I know), handling is a little soft and forgiving but still corner well, they're good on gas, a claimed 45hp, and it will do the ton (100mph). Although I'm quite tall it's still fine ergo wise but will suit smallies just as well.

You're looking around $2000-3500 depending on how decent the tyres on it are, and its condition. Replace the tyres if they're original or shit.

That leaves another $1k in your budget for protective apparel - since you're commuting, I'd buy textile jacket/pants from 1tonne.co.nz unless you can find a* / revit on sale at your local. Gloves/boots/helmet are more fiddly to fit properly, I'd buy them from the shop. With helmets, you want A) a good fit (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Obi6bW_Uwi0), B) A pinlock insert.

It helps to have two pairs of gloves when commuting in case your first get drenched on the way to work - maybe get a second hand spare pair. Jacket/pants/boots shouldn't leak.

Come spring/summer you can think about a leather jacket, and either leather pants or kevlar jeans to go with.

I sincerely apologise to any KLR's reading this. I'm merely mocking the stereotype, not the machine. A truly versatile & unkillable bike much loved by riders who re-use teabags & knit their own toothpaste.

Sweet pictures and thanks for the input. Hyosungs are starting to make me afraid as I hear about lots of people having trouble with them. That said I assume lots of people also don't perform regular maintenance and oil checks. Any feedback from some Hyosung riders out there would be welcomed as a lot of people dismiss them as "korean shite" but then when asked have never owned or even ridden one so I'm not sure what to believe.

Besides, since taking one for a test spin the ride position on the GT250R doesn't suit me, don't like having my feet too close to my arse.

Hyosung:weep::blink: but you'd probably be right.

See? Plenty of suspicion for Hyosung around.

Having a go on a Boulevard got my heart rate going a bit as it was something new, but not the sort of bike I think I'd want to own...will look into the SV650 and DRZ400...know of any good production years?

Hyosung? Hmmmm. Bloke at Beaurepairs down the road is on his second one. Spoke to him a few years ago when he was a learner on a 2 fiddly. Loved it. No issues. Since then I see he has lost the "L" & is riding another Hyosung, a bigger, red one. The limit of my knowledge.

I see him on his commute most mornings. Bike sounds good, he's generally well stuffed into a corner & the bike is parked outside the shop 5 days a week.
Can't be all bad, it's his only transport. Another one on the list?

This CBR is in your price range (currently) and likely to be much more reliable and resalable than a hyosung come upgrade time. Plus you get to ride it back from Auckland and it's got heated grips for winter....

It's also got a sensible engine that wont throw you out of the saddle if you twist the wrist too fast.

I knew you were joking I just didn't know what you meant by poked. I did think that sounded odd when I read it. I've sent the guy a message asking for some photos of the "cosmetic scars". Not up for driving all the way to Auckland to find the other side of that bike looks like it has been in a fight with a lawnmower and then drive all the way home.

Good call. I bought both my bikes unseen but asked & received lots of photos & had all my questions answered over the phone. Just had to trust my instincts on the integrity of the sellers.

I'm always puzzled by one side of a bike being advertised.

Looking at this picture of the rear wheel it looks like it has seen a lot of wear for 4,400kms...does it looks like the "careful lady owner" has been doing burn-outs to anybody else? Was thinking I might be being paranoid and it could be road dust, but there is no such on the front wheel...

I have literally no idea. The fact that it comes with all the original parts is of more value to me...if I were to damage the exhaust/muffler I can just put the stock one back on when I come to sell etc etc.

After having viewed it I'm not so keen though, and the seller was a bit of a bitch so I didn't want to part with my money anyway...

I found that a decent 250cc bike from Auckland and North was pushing prices to $5000 and above.

I then got bored of visiting TradeMe sellers who had (in my opinion) over estimated the value of their rides and wouldn't budge on price. Even more bored of getting blank looks when asking about what essential maintenance had been performed and when - including one total douchebag who tried to tell me that there was no need to replace the oil filter on his Kawi Ninja 250. What a bellend.

So I just went and bought a new bike.

The only thing I'm not too keen on is the exhaust, and I'm planning on getting a better one once I have some free funds. Everything else sweet as a nut.
