Softening the seat

I hope to get out and about a bit more as summer comes nearer. What do people do to lessen the butt ache on long rides. I hear there is some gel pad stuff around, but never seen it. What about sheepskin, does it help. Standing on the pegs is ok but not a long-term fix.

And for any "tough it out replies" - it is my butt and I will soften it if I want to :clap:

I find the GS seat pretty good - broad but a bit on the firm side.

Jimmie, I find the GS seat quite good for long rides. My only complaint is that it is a bit too low and that causes a slight cramp in the legs behind the knees.

My solution was to make a pad out of the same foam that is used for bed rolls, and top that off with a piece of sheep skin. The foam squashes down to fit the shape of your bum quite quickly, and the sheepskin helps to raise the seating position slightly. Be careful that you don't raise the seat height too much, or it will put more strain on the lower arms and wrists.

This setup proved satisfactory for the Southern Cross Rally where we were 8 - 12 hours on the bike each day. :ride:

Hey, I used to get the same problem and found out it was just a matter of getting out there a bit more. I had my sporty re-padded and didn't make much difference until I started riding alot more. Do more regular riding and your butt will get better.

Funny,that's exactly the setup Draco came up with for her cbr too.....seems to be ok.

Thanks guys. I was not considering getting the whole seat remodelled but the Trimit option does look quite attractive.

Jantar, I am a bit long in the leg (6'2" all up) and also find cramp a problem on occasions especially when got full gear on. Will try out the foam/sheepskin trick. How thick is the foam you used and do you have it strapped or stuck onto the bike or just as a loose pad?

I used 10 mm foam, and velcro to hold it to the sheepskin. Then the sheepskin is velcroed to the seat.

The seat on my TransAlp 650 was crap, MacDonald's Tauranga remodeled it.
Now looks and rides fantastic. I sent it up by courier, they fixed it and sent it back in less than a week. Would have been less but he rang and asked if he could do another job first. Bloody good service too. Can't recommend him enough. Most comment is oh you have a Corbin seat. No I have something better than a Corbin, I have got a "Rider". Cheers John. :clap:

price 500 + gst. as per the web site. my dam budget is streatched for the south island tour.
still dam site cheaper than a corbin seat.
but 500 oh hell. i know my butt can handle a few k's but when it comes to the girlfriends. that just might not be something i can gamble on.

And thought it was a waste of $'s.
So are trying the stop-every-hour routeen. Am a bit worried tho cause intend to do a SI tour 2 up, with local bike shop and you do about 5000k's in 10 days. Dont know if I'll manange that.
For the GC I will prob find 10mm of that snow-foam stuff as everyone says you need something.
Longest trip was to Gisborne via Eastcape 7 hours of actual riding I think. Had lots of stop .. .. waiting for someone on a 250 trail bike :(
