Was taking advantage of the nice weather in CHCH and decided to take the bike over the port hills.
What im finding though is that going up steep hills when i try get the revs up in 3rd gear, 'forward drive' seems to slip for a second and then come right. Noticed it in second too.
Any ideas whats up?

You reckon the clutch is slipping?

by what you described, that's what it sounds like, yeah.

It may be past the point of adjustment. You haven't been using CAR engine oil to top it up have you .. ???

The OTHER possible reason for "Forward drive slip" is the drive chain is loose and cogs are fucked and the CHAIN is slipping. You WILL hear that. If it's the clutch slipping ... it makes it seem like your bike has an automatic gearbox. (no jerking/rattling)

Shit I hope not,
Ive been looking on line for similar problems and I found this:

Engine cuts out and misfires on load. Pronounced when climbing hills. - Mentions sparkplug problems

What would a misfire entail??

A Misfire on a single cylinder bike ... the fire goes out. You WOULD notice ... and know what is happening.

Check the chain for slackness. 25 mm up max if you push it up bottom center of the chain. NO sideways movement at all.

If the clutch cable is too tight ... that may cause slipping. Tension cable until there is no slack but does not have full tension. The tiniest of slack.

Car engine oils are not good in motorcycle engines. Their additives ruin the clutch. CAR clutches are dry.

Ok probably not misfiring.
There is a bit of vertical slack on the chain and quite a bit of sideways movement.

I haven't been using car oil but I don't know about the previous owner.

I may just have to bring it in to a mechanic.
Any ideas of who will look after me in CHCH?

Sideways movement is not good. It would seem that the chain is fucked.

I might suggest you replace the chain (at any motorcycle shop that is convenient to you) as soon as ... and repeat the hill test. If the problem persists ... it may well be the clutch that is/was the problem.

Those pesky previous owners ... strike again ...
