Bike freight options, Nelson to Napier?

ive just bought a cheap bike in nelson, its de-registered so a fly-ride isnt an option so im after advice on bike moving...cheapest is a good start:eek:
ive got a number for bike trans, and bike movers so ill ask them for a price, has anybody used a general freight firm before? like mainfreight or what have you? any advice appreciated

google bike transporters and email em all for a quote, be surprised how cheap it is, general carriers are not normally set up to cart bikes easily and often will load and unload with a forklift increasing the chance of damage, have heard of the occasional furniture movers carting bikes but have no personal experience with them

i have used motorcyclemovers before and they were relatively cheap and easy to deal with and at the time visited nelson on a regular basis, was at the end of 2012 and cost me $390 to get a goldwing from tauranga to just out of nelson, cheapest by far at the time

I used Mainfreight to transport a bike from Auckland down to HB, the bike was damaged in transit. When I questioned how this happened, their reply was "We do not transport bikes - no fault of theirs" Umm - okay? This happened a few years ago so maybe things have changed..? <_<

cheers, ill give them a bell tmw..if theyre not at the dawn parade! $390 nelson to tga for a goldwing is a bloody bargain. theres a bloke 'danny' that does it between gisborne, napier/hastings, taupo, hamilton, tauranga etc that is cheap but nelsons a bit out of his region sadly

your probably right, not worth going with general freight if they dont take the care, did they scrape/scratch it?

I spent over ten years doing general freight and carted a few bikes in that time from brabd new blue wing crated Hondas to stuff like yours.
Cracks me up how people think Mainfreight or the other 'brandname' companies are better, or even the specialist transporters. Everyone has their whoopsie moment on forklift sooner or later.
There's no guarantee your big dollar carrier might not have third party subbie transport your bike/freight either.

I'd give TNL a call, they are based in Nelson and have a wide variety of gear moving about.
If your really worried about damage get a hefty large hardwood pallet and strap the bike to it your self and drop at the depo.
Most guys care for freight out of personal integrity anyway. The firm I last worked at we had 3 bikers out of about 8 linehaul drivers who loaded their own trailers.
The last thing we want is to break something or have to clean up breakage. Most of the time, bike on side stand and two strops secures it fine.

Whoever you choose send the key separate or some monkey will start it and redline and ride around the depo on night shift lol...

We carried a few over the years but we are the same, about 5 bikers among our drivers always helps.
my view....crate it up. Thats what we do and we put that service into the cost. Never had a failure yet.
