Some of you may have seen in the racing thread the following:
I contact Rob and suggested that if they didn't get the numbers for the Hyosung/250 then would they consider opening it up for buckets.
Short answer is yes, but we need numbers (20 ideally).
5 from palmy means we are quarter the way there.
6 odd races, $145. Private meeting.
Hands up whom is keen. It's a really good opportunity to show off our class.
PM me if your interested.
We have been asked to invite all 250cc four stroke racers to join the event during the Taupo Truck Racing Meeting, May 10-11, 2014.
The entry is $145 for the weekend (includes transponder).
You will be mixed in with the Hyosung class.
Track 2 (2.2km)
Sat practice/Qualifying and 2 races. Sunday 2, maybe 3 races.
Free camping on site.
Below is the detail from Rob Edwards who is organising the event. Please advise him directly if you intend to go. Please pass on to anyone who may be interested.
Cheers
Brent
Taupo Truck Racing Meeting, May 10-11, 2014, Motards and Hyosungs
"This will be the third year that Ricoh Taupo Motorsport Park have run this event. It will be on Saturday and Sunday, 10-11 of May this year. This has been a real fun and different event in past years, pulling in sizable crowds; great for racers and their sponsors! We look forward to the motards returning and bringing in the Hyosongs to get another class of bikes at the event.
The classes this year are the trucks, motards, Hyosung 250’s, sidecars ,drifters and some classic cars…a bit of a Fringe Festival! So here are some details in no particular order………
Friday 9, will be a practise day. This is not included in the price of the weekend, and if you want to book in for that, you will need to contact the track office on 07 376 5033.
At this point in time (28/2), we do not yet have a finalised track timetable. Last year, each class got six races and a practise/qualifying session. Saturday sessions will be on the 2.2 km track, with hopefully an option on the Sunday to run a session or two on the 3.5 km full circuit.
On the Saturday afternoon, the NZ Sidecar Association will be running their annual “Have a Go Day “, on the old Taupo Club circuit. This popular event is a great added extra to the weekend; $10 gets you three laps on a sidecar, just make sure that any friends and partners that come with you have a full set of safety gear as well.
Flag Marshalls. We can not run the event without flaggies who will only be on the circuit for the bikes, and be bought in again for the cars and trucks. To help get the flaggies we need, we are offering a free weekends racing to any competitor who can bring a person to flag marshall , wives, partners, friends etc, so long as they are over eighteen and available for Saturday and Sunday. First in, best dressed.
Ride Gear. The usual. Helmets (road or MX for motards), one piece leathers or two piece zip together ones, back protectors (not a piece of built in foam), leather gloves and boots (may be MX boots for the motards)
Pit Garages. These are in short supply, so only the first dozen Motard riders and first dozen Hyosung riders entered and paid will get one. Later entries will have to work out of the car park.Hopefully we may pick up another garage or two later, but this is not guaranteed and at the moment we have only been allocated two double garages.
Entry fees. These are $145 per class for the weekend. The only extra $’s that might need to be added on later are for transponder hire. Taupo Car Club are running the event timing, and we are currently trying to sort the price of the transponders out, please bear with us.
Entries. All correspondence to robjohnedwards@gmail.com , or call me on 0274 303 068. Payment via internet banking to account number 021 244000 7027 00 BNZ Albany, R and R Edwards Ltd. Please use May 10-11 and your name as the reference. Please send an email advising us of your payment, and scan and send the entry form with details of your bike, race numbers and sponsors etc.
Licenses. This is a private event, so no race license is necessary, however, all riders must be sixteen years or older.
Further details. Other items such as indemnities, event passes, timetables and rider briefings will be forwarded to you all as we get closer to the event".

Bring on the big track, Im in! So sick of kart tracks.
The GP should be run on full tracks and alternated between north and south island. Not trying to undermine the excellent work the guys do organising the GP just missing real bends and want to bring back the south islanders. yeah yeah:Offtopic:

Three questions
How long do we have to consider, the entry form is pretty vague on close off dates and the like.
How would this fit with the have a goat day as I was keen to have a crack at that.
Have you got ballast for stinky lined up?

1.'awaiting answer for that. But safe to assume not too long.
2. Far as I understand Goat day is Saturday and one should be move between... But I'll find out.
3. First I have to get stinky signed off (part of the reason for taking her up), then I'll be looking for all the ballast I can find... You can even take it out yourself....
You must spread some rep....
Are you not you guilty of turning turtle in a chair as well?

Is there any way to ride between the racing and the goat day to get both in?

Bugger all PMs....
I'm not going to have my bike ready so I'm off the list. :(
Scratch me as well. Too much on at the moment.
After a full day of work on the bike I can confirm it ain't going to be ready for a wee while.
Hopefully this is the last time I have to deal with ignition issues! :brick:
Right, that's cool.
I should have posted the idea early and opened it up for discussion, before working the organisers to enable us to enter (guess whom now looks like a bit of a dork, more than normal)...
I'm really struggling to believe that no one on here wants to race at taupo given all the discussions over the past 18 months...
Never mind.
I'll talk to organiser and appologise for wasting their time.

I must have misread, I thought you were aiming to have the buckets entered with the other 250s bert. But you meant to have a bucket only race if the numbers weren't there for the 250s?
And you've just entered with the 250s kel? That's gonna be a great watch!
As far as I understood buckets were in with the 250s. Might not be too late if you want to go email the geezer.

I didn't think I would be able to attend this but looks like I will so am going to put my name down. Wish I had a fairing and some more power now haha.
First time racing not on a kart track, I'm super looking forward to it!

You do have a fairing, its even been cut down for the lower bars. Go have a look in that box of bits.
Was wanting to get my fairing mounted up but will probably not have time.
Do the buckets get to share garage 9?

Yeahhh... the thing about that FXR fairing was that I never thought in a million years I'd bother putting an FXR on a full sized track so I sold it :brick:
I also thought my RS would be closer to going than it is but hey, slowly slowly catch the monkey as my old boy likes to say.
Will bring a calendar for lap timing, a novel for the straight and something to eat so I don't starve.
Remember to change your gearing!
Bigger sprocket on the rear right? :bash:
Thankfully I got a bunch of sprockets from Kel when I bought the bike so I'll try a few out. Anyone have any suggestions on how low to go on a 19hp, fairingless FXR for Taupo track 2?
Will check the ratios I have when I get home.

Start with 15 and if won't pull it switch to 14. Don't go any lower than that.

I'm glad Chris that you can make it, i put your name down yesterday in the vain hope that you would come...we can continue the battle from Tokoroa (you can have Henk's beer I owe him).
Don't go too high on the gearing as track two isn't as big as it looks. We generally run the same has tok 14-47.
Game on.

I've paid my money and submitted my forms. Bring it on.
You may have a faster bike, a fairing and a GPR chassis but I have a weight advantage, an excessively competitive mind and yoof on my side.
I just checked and my highest gearing is 13/47 being 3.62 compared to your suggested 14/47 being 3.36
Anyone have a 14 tooth front sprocket for an FXR I can borrow for the weekend? I won't be able to get one before Saturday.

7th May 2014, 22:43
I've been nerding out a bit lately on gear ratios on the GP125 but for those interested, FXR gearbox ratios are:
Primary reduction - 3.5 (70/20)
Final reduction - 3.428 (48/14)
1st - 3.000 (33/11)
2nd - 1.857 (26/14)
3rd - 1.368 (26/19)
4th - 1.095 (23/21)
5th - 0.923 (24/26)
6th - 0.800 (20/25)
compared to your suggested 14/47 being 3.36
That would give you a top speed of 153kph. Might be a tad tall for the FXR.
The KE is geared for, wait for it, 153kph!
I only ever ran a 13 at taupo (came out of Rich's tool box). But the. I am a fat prick with a slow bike so what would I know.

What tire rolling radius is that using?:
circumference of 1920mm.
chrisc
7th May 2014, 23:33
I used 300mm as the rolling radius based on a measurement of the tire but that would imply a circumference of 1,885mm which doesn't seem right from tire manufacturer measurements.
You must be using 12,500rpm in your calc.
I was using 11,500-12,000 based off this graph and not hitting the limiter each change

For sure. 14-49 is good for a bike with 20ish hp. If you go to tall coming up the hill. Yes its a hill on a bucket out the back. You will struggle and it will bog when you hit 6th for a brief moment before the transition back to the main straight. You should be able to go down one gear and pin it through that bit. Track is wider than you think. Just watch the bumps on near the white line on the inside. Have fun. Video please people.
Right got hold of the programme. Riders breifing at 8.25am, we're on track 8.45am. Guess we'll have to leave Auckland around 4.30am :shit:

Very sucky that we couldn't get more than 4 riders for an event at taupo.
But we will have fun none the less...

Yeah that does suck but I can understand why. It's gonna be damn fun!
It doesn't help that there are two Auckland rounds in May and that a lot of riders don't look at the forums. I think if it became a common thing and people knew that bucket guys were frequenting larger tracks then there would be more pull from the group.

For anyone interested, kel took out all three races today quite comfortably. Some great battles between keiren, bert and I. Somehow managed to beat keiren in that last race for 3rd (0.2s off 2nd), pretty stoked.
There has been quite a bit if crap on the track after the super trucks, drifters, classic cars have been out so times haven't been as good as they might have been. Best time so far in the class is 1.28.286 by kel. Keirens was 1.29.3 and my own a 1.29.7. Best hyosung time was 1.29.7 by Jono Dol. Hopefully these times continue to drop in tomorrow's racing. Bloody good racing going down despite the small turnout.

Killer weekend! Thanks Brent. Lets get some more bucket out there next time
See post here:
Hooo, leee, cow what a fun weekend!
Massive thanks to Brent for hustling us up for this, I'm super happy I went. It was my first time on full sized track and I had a blast. A very well run event, definitely going back for the next one. I can understand bucket riders not being keen to race Hampton (straight city) but Taupo track 2 is the bomb! Even with 19hp, my FXR was a blast to ride and with more riders around it'd be even better. The straights aren't too long to be boring and there are enough challenging corners to create some big dogfights.

Time for a video I guess. Should be uploaded in about 3 hours or so. Sorry about the engine sound, camera was mounted to a filthy foul stroke.

Actually, thinking about it that was the old foul stroke that I built so guess I took constructor honours for the meet
Seems I managed to lock this so only I could view . Will need to find a 10 year old to get it sorted, standby.

You have the ability to research and learn enough on the internet to build a fast 2 stroke but you don't know how to google three key words: youtube private settings.

I wouldn't have been able to race due to it being so loud if I had kept it as it was when it left 'the factory' hahaha. Not that the abortion exhaust I have on there now is any good, but at least it's not too loud.

Ouch.
If only it was that simple. I needed my 10 year olds log on. Got that sorted only to find google sent the verification code to the wifes cell phone. I'll get there yet
