Looking to sell a 73 (maybe 74) Motosport. One owner since 1974, used but not abused. Looks to be complete and a reasonably straightforward restoration job.

I think you might like to edit that price....it'll be a long time before it's worth 100k <_<

Sorry! First time poster, too many zeroes.

What do you think it is worth?

swarfie
28th April 2014, 21:47
Yep 1 k, that's more like it. There's been a few on Trademe lately. Anywhere between 2 to 4 k (for a really good one) but this ones a bit rusty looking so priced about right. What people don't seem to realize is how much bikes cost to restore...chroming has gone through the roof lately. I had one of those in the 70's, they're a cool thing and one of the best looking trail bikes from that era. I did over 30,000 km on it and would like another one but alas my garage has met it's expanded limit unfortunately.

73 or 74 ?... if the barrel under the exhust pipe has no fins its a 73... from 74 on they had small fins on the cam chain tunnel..
of course it could be the first 73 sold new in 74...

This one is the second release with more fins on the cylinder. The shield on the muffler is slightly larger and it has the plastic case on the instruments rather than the metal as on the original. If anyone wants more photos please email me western_rail@xtra.co.nz

There is a fella here who rides one everyday to work and back, every week he has offers from people wanting to buy it. Highest I have heard is 3 and a half. He will not sell it though.:niceone:

It's not ... going by the rear frame behind the seat .. it was a farm bike. It was usual to have a mud flap at both ends. The rear one usually got knocked/melted off by the exhaust.

I owned one myself in the 70's ..

Another one of my strange but yet,I think funny true stories.
I was on a trail ride early 70s with a few mates,at the back of the pack. Behind me came 'dusty' of 'leda leathers' fame on one of these XL250 motosports. He didn't appear so I went back looking for him. Found him down by a creek just sitting there. He said,I got a puncture, I said, gotta a kit ? Dusty in his dry way said nah ,
but I've got a beer !
He proceeded to unwrap two bottles of beer from a bag on the back!
The rest duely arrived to find us sittin having a beer !!!!!

so funny if you know Dusty.

Fuck me 40 years! Don't it fly...

Never had one myself, but I did have several XL350s. With better shocks they punched well above their weight.

Nice score.

...didn't want to crash your ad but now that it's sold...I have four motors, two runners, one of them only needing an oil ring, one with noisy bottom end, one that is parts (or may be a runner...three are in frames with most of the stuff still bolted on...these are not pretty things and went round and round dirt ovals for some time, but there is definitely a good one amongst the lot of it...anyone down Sth may be interested?...PM me...Im not giving them away but will take a realistic offer if anyone interested...

Yes, do run a thread on the restoration.
I had a 1974 model as my first bike, was one or two yours old, somewhat better condition than this one. I had a great run out of it, rode from Dunedin in the south to North Cape in the north, often two-up. Drowned it in the Waimak so deep that jetboats were running between me and the shore. Oil (milkshake) level was way up. Had it for about 30,000km. Very reliable. Clutch actuating arm bearing needed bushing because chain flicked a stone against the crankcase in front of the countershaft sprocket. That's all. I remember the lousy headlight. Followed a Newmans bus from Picton to Nelson one night so that I could see where I was going. Dual rear wheels of the bus drove over the top of some animal that splattered all over me.
Getting a bit nostalgic....

Do it proud 98tls !

My brother had the XL350 in the mid 70s. My XL175 ran rings around it off road and the 350 seemed a giant of a machine to me and scary as shit power.

Did you see the classics at that Bike Revolutions show at the Otago Uni campus a few months ago. Very tidy SL125 and a few others of that ilk

Never got down to see that in Dunners, wish i did.1st bike was an SL125 then moved on to an orange XL175 then a XL350 next, funny looking back, was a real Honda thing going on as the next my 1st road bike was a lovely 500/4.Yep it will receive plenty of TLC though it will be a long term resto, cant wait to pick the thing up to be honest.Good to see theres plenty with a soft spot for the old Motorsports, there just that kind of old bike eh...

Ah that would make sense.....
But I was surprise to see no damage to the tail of the front guard. All of my 70's farm hacks were abused as hell back there. Most had the rubber bit riveted or "stuck" on.
Perhaps it was gently removed?

FJRider

.. Perhaps it was gently removed?

There looks to be no holes there ... probably never anything fitted there. The front mud flap was to keep any shit flying off the front wheel down to a low angle. NOT up into the face of the rider.

If it came from Central Otago ... there is little or no mud to speak of anyway.

I've looked at a few Photo's and vids of that model ... and it seems the front guard is on the right way round.

The front guard is on the correct way. The rubber flap on the front of the guard was not an original fitting. It was very effective though, stopped a lot of water coming back into the riders face.
