Hi Im moving to methven Canterbury in August from the UK and was wondering is there any local bike nights or ride outs to get involved in. I have just sold my pride and joy a classic Cbr600f1 and will be on the look out for a bike as soon as I get into town any help or advise would be greatly appreciated thank you.

Methven is fairly much situated in a place where getting anywhere means good roads to ride. Lots of places to ride to, some of the Canterbury plains are just that, straight roads and a little monotonous, but you dont have to go far to find plenty of hills and twisty bits. you will find the people to ride with regularly if that is what you wish...

Thanks for the reply I have had a look on google earth and there does seem to be some lovely roads that hiway 72 looks a nice ride and not to far out of town. I have seen some really nice roads on YouTube captured by a chap called peeteey that are very similar to what I grow up on rural Ireland. I ride a bike daily and for most of the year here so hopeing to continue this in New Zealand. I'll be bringing all my leathers and helmet but will be after a bike as soon as I land

There are not many places with worse weather than the UK than.., wait for it, Methven. Great choice mate!

Hey I've stayed in the local pub for ski weekends and, like Chris Pine found out, it's a hoot. But seriously man you are in the Alps! i.e. COLD. NZ is small so Methven is sort of in reach some good roads. Arthurs Pass is legendary. But you are a bit far from Christchurch's wonderful Akaroa. Get a good bike and the unbelievably amazing West Coast is not too far away. Not a bad ride from Methven to Hanmer Springs as well.
Welcome and don't drink all our beer

there is actually a shop about 10min South of Methven - Spring Lynne Motorcycles. Never been there but they have advertised some interesting stuff.

there are a group of locals who will probably welcome you as another motorcyclist. they were the guys who started the ball rolling which resulted in the methven street races held annually at easter. you'll probably get a job helping....

i'm about 25min North across the gorge.

Methven is a wicked spot if you're into the outdoors and you're well situated-ish for blats down to Otago and North Canterbury, as well as the skiing mentioned (although there are better slopes than a crowded Hutt on the weekends).

Safe travels.

Welcome to NZ from a fellow Pom....Bike scene is great here and Kiwibiker as you have found out is the place to be...

I live in Ashburton which is well set up bikewise, we have 4 main franchise dealers, a dyno, wheels week, regular trail rides and of course the Methven Mountain thunder.

If your into road racing Ruapuna is one hour North and Levels is one hour south.

Biker heaven !

Thanks for all the advice very much appreciated.
I have found spring lynne motorbikes on bookface looks a good local place to go for a look when i arrive. Winter should'nt bother me to much having sent a few in northern scotland but good to know theres a decent local seen mountain thuder looks like a good day out with plenty old classic still alive and well. I work in farming so loving the outdoors comes hand in hand with me job, and Im afraid im not a pom but i am married to one not to far away though just the other side of the irish sea on the south coast of ireland
