42nd Traverse. Could I do it on a trail bike? Does the bike have to be road legal?

Just thinking I would like to give it a go on my KDX. Have done it a few times on a Mountain Bike. Obviously I would need somebody to drop me off and pick me up.

I have the 42nd earmarked to do on my adventurised Rev3 when I'm up to riding it again. Just need to make some adjustments to make it a bit more water proof. The thing only has to look at water and it stops. Think there is a mod you do to the carb and air box to stop it gulping water. Will most likely be a two day ride as I'm liable to get a tad preoccupied exploring trails in there on a go anywhere trials bike - fun azzz though

We were there at Anzac weekend & the side tracks are very wet & greasy now.

You have just convinced me that this will be a summer mission.

Andy posted video & pictures of side tracks, not the 42nd traverse itself. That is much more manageable. ;)

Don't be Scared:rofl:

I've done it several times on my KLR by myself...no worries

Steve's right, the video was taken on side tracks and was meant to show Oscar the current conditions.

I recommend starting from the Tongariro end if it's been wet or your first time on the 42nd. I've riden solo in summer but wouldn't now as it's isolated and can get freezing cold. The Owhango end was in excellent condition at Anzac weekend - we didn't go right thru.

Give me holler when you are going.
And to the OP, a trail bike? I recommend a triumph rocket.

It has to be a summer mission.

From the link you gave ...

4WD vehicle access on the 42 Traverse is open each year in the summer, from 1 December to 30 April only.

Vehicles are not permitted in the winter, from 1 May to 30 November. 4WD vehicles are not permitted off the 42 Traverse route.

Did it early April starting from Owhango. Made it through on the V-Strom...but not planning on taking her back through there anytime soon...
