Pvc tubes... That would cost bugger all to fit. What a great idea.

While I like the concept, I wonder what the cost is.

I imagine you'd have to replace the tubes whenever they were hit. (By bike or car).

Most car drivers who bash into it, are able to drive away again quite happily... thus leaving the gummint to foot the bill of fixing it.

In saying all that, It's a great idea though.

But they needed to do that with the metal armco anyway

Actually they take quite a pounding.
Seen more than the odd car park into one, and the barrier just compressed a little.

This is a variation on a French product called Moto-tub, which has been in use for years. It covers the posts, which are the dangerous part of Armco for riders.
But not in NZ.
Oh no, says Min of Transport, we have to do tests and evaluate, and then run a trial etc before installing, and of course it will alter the properties of the barrier likely causing cars to flip over the top. WTF??
This was the response I recd from Harry Duynhoven (Labour minister Transport) AND Steven Joyce (National minister Transport). How odd that both would say exactly the same thing. One could be forgiven for thinking that no Govt is interested in the safety of riders.

Surely they can evaluate based on the experiences of the French and Norwegian ministries of transport???

i know i know there i go again raising the issue of common sense and ministries

John Banks owns a Harley.
Doesn't mean that he rides though...

Don't waste your time. 'We' went over all this in 2007 over the backlash to Daniel Evans's death on the cheesecutter near Papakura. And then again in 2009 over the bullshit ACC changes/increases.
Listen up - successive governments are not interested in motorcyclists and their 'issues'.

Surely they can evaluate based on the experiences of the French and Norwegian ministries of transport???

Common sense and government/s have never been easy bedfellows...

This part made me giggle.

"Like all grown up motorcyclists Even Elseth was wearing full riding gear."

I do remember Helen Clarke responding to a question about road safety initiatives from Germany. " Well that's a German response to a German problem ".

Didn't stop her and every other politician trappsing off to anywhere in the world to attend a conference on anything, whether it was relevant to NZ or not.

The PVC tubing sounds okay, but how long before ' Joe fly by night plumbers' decides he would have a better use for the stuff.

Seems accurate to me. Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional. Just like wearing proper gear is optional

Of course if they did it here it would go to the cheapest vendor and be made of of non UV stablised plastic like the white road markers are now made off and just snap.

I have a mate who used to supply the white markers till they lost the contract to China....

They should make those cheese-cutter centre barrier things out of the same cheap shit so they'd smash instead of dicing. ohhahhh ..Makes me shiver every time I ride on a main road and see them. What were those bloody roading officials thinking of? ...Scarey:(

Went for a spin today. One road (Esk-Kilkoy Rd) lead past a dammed reservoir. This is decidedly a B road, but great for motorcyclists.
What REALLY impressed me was that every length of Armco on the outside of right-handers was bottom railed. In this case, galvanised box section was used.
Britain and many countries in Europe have used a variety of shields for some years now.
NZ has no excuse not to use something to cover those exposed posts.
