I currently have a KiwiRider sub (expiring soon) but it's coverage of bikes is a little too general for my specific interests. That's not a complaint as such but I'm just not interested in specialist dirt or road bikes.

So I'm looking for suggestions, either online only or good old fashioned paper. What are people reading and subbing to?

I’ve subscribed to a few bike mags over the years, but really got sick of all the shallow, positive write ups. They seem afraid to say anything negative about anything they test. I guess they’re scared the supply of free gear will dry up if they say something bad. All I want is an honest, unbiased opinion.

Why do you think Topgear still does so well after so many seasons. While it’s getting repetative, at least if something is shit, they’ll say it’s shit.

Both British:

http://www.adventurebikerider.com/ like most bike mags but tailored to the British/European market.. gear reviews, shipping companies, local UK green lane route maps and trip guides, with a smattering of big trip writeups...

and http://overlandmag.com/ this one has a more international array of writers, and is more of a coffee table stunning pictures kinda publication, quality of the physical mag is beautiful.. a collection of amazing road trips

I get what I need off a few good FB feeds ADV moto I think and google anything else.
When I bought the DR there was a good Aussie mag called TABM the adventure bike mag, was printed landscape instead of portrait format, good but died off.
Been nothing great since the days of original fastbikes mag when the Emmett (500GP/BSBK) brothers and colin schiller were so honest and crashed so many test bikes they had to buy their own and sell them afterwards.
One of their best articles opened with a two page spread of a fireblade sparking on its cases as the rider lost it along with a quote saying Kenny Roberts was lying when he said its impossible to lose the front end while on the gas!
After they got bought out There was a short lived mag called RPM, Ian Cramp (worth a google for his write ups) had some great engine theory discussions going on. http://www.iancramp.co.uk/journalism.html

That fastbikes mag was awesome. I remember they did an article on the fuel econemy of an R1. They jumped on the autobahn early in the morning, cranked it full noise (270km+), and held it until it ran out of gas. I can't recall exactly, but it was about 20 minutes from a full tank to empty. :headbang:

The only way there'll be good adv articles in mags is when those that go adventuring sit down & write about it. Unfortunately too many bike mags end up with bike "shootouts" etc for the bike suppliers advertising. It's a business so that's why they have to I spose.

What I'd like is for those on advrider like Metaljockey, RTW Doug, etc who do fricking incredible trips write them down on paper & put them in a big coffee table size book to read while on the dunny.

Online ride reports are good but not quite the same as flipping pages sitting on the deck in the sun with a nice cigar.

Have a look at Free Wheeling. An Aussie mag mostly adv & big bike touring etc. No sports or motocross etc. Issue 7 should be out soon. Paper plus seem to stock it.

I have found when I am camping in the outback that a copy of Hustler goes down well.

I agree (especially with the sun and cigar bits...).

I downloaded the free Adventure Bike Rider app on my iPad and bought their latest mag ($7.95ea) Thanks Fern for the pointer. This one utilises Apples built in Newstand app, easy to read, bookmark, search etc. DO NOT however, get ABR's own online version. It promises full access to current editions, plus their entire back catalogue, but the reader interface they utilise is ghastly on PC, and it does not function well on a mobile device at all. $40 mistake...

Whilst I don't like the term 'shootout', direct comparisons often show up some excellent points you wouldn't normally come across whilst testing just one bike. I think they're good from that point of view.

I like the look of the Aussie Adventure Rider mag... that might become my paper fix of choice.
