Cheers man. If gear was cheaper, do you think more people would wear better safety gear? and do you think people should "be required" to wear a set minimum of Safety gear ie gloves, full protective pants not shorts and jandalls etc

I am sure it would help leed to ACC paying out less for injuries

The 10% import duty for store bought gear is (I think) reasonably low. Add freight and manufacturing costs (and Export duties from the country or origin) ... and it starts to add up. Everybody wants their piece of the pie. Buy direct from the manufacturer and it will be cheaper if cost levels are (relatively) low ... and actually may escape an import tax. (PERSONAL USE ONLY)

Those new to motorcycling may not realize the FULL importance and need for good gear. And prefer to spend their money on fuel and Bling ... even many experienced riders wont bother.

Any legislation to enforce an increase in the wearing of (good) safety gear ... will get the vocal "Freedom of choice" brigade up in arms ...

UNTIL ... their first prang/off ... then opinions and attitudes change. (Funny that)

At this stage ... I very much doubt a lower payout for motorcycle injuries with have little (or NO) impact on the ACC levies ... currently demanded in registration fees.

That's interesting. I have an email from someone at customs saying that motorcycle safety equipment 'generally' has a duty exemption (GST still applies). However for a binding ruling on a particular item I'd have to pay $$$. :rolleyes:

Is that for Commercial importing or Private (one-off) imports .. ???

Private importing on stuff that is for personal/private use often escapes the import tax ...

Buy from a dealer after it's imported ... and you pay for the tax AND their profit margin ...

If you want the Government to reduce their cut in the imports ... ask the dealers to reduce their cut in profits ..

In the interest of increased sales and public safety (thus profit) of course. <_<

It may surprise you.

Go to a senior school (eg New Plymouth Boys High) and stand by the bike parks and watch the kids turn up on their mopeds in School shorts, shirt, sandals....no gloves, just a cheap helmet. Of course they all ride sensibly...you wouldn't ever see them going up the hill round to back of Pukekura park leaning back and trying to pop wheelies repeatedly holding up the cars (and motorbikes) behind them. I guess you're only young once.

I learned in helmet, welding mitts, hiking boots, jeans and a hunting jacket. Took me a year to source a jacket big enough that cost lonely 6 days wages. Another year to find pants in my size at any price. About 5 days wages. Gloves took about 6 months and fell apart in as many weeks. Replaced them with a custom made pair from a craft market in inglewood got $60. 2 winters before they became my summer gloves because they wore so thin in the lining.
Times changed in the early 2000s biking was more acceptable and had become a consumer sport. With the exception of pants any gear could be had for less than 3 days wages if you shop around. Gloves were now the same price as a cheap jacket.

Now you have to be a medium to buy anything quality without paying 10 days wages.

What they were saying is, even if it was over the 'duty threshold', there'd still be no actual duty- just GST.

I have imported safety equipment previously and customs said the same thing. "No duty on safety equipment" but it did attract the standard GST amount.

Was worried about this with boots as sender called them shoes which youshop autotagged as clothing for which there is a 10% duty. And once the duty added trips the gst threshold etc...
Came in as auto accessories in the end like the heated gloves did.
The menu on youshop/customs doesn't offer much options, there is a sepearte listing for helmets though...
