Nope. Oil is an international commodity and if one country has trouble, that is their problem and their cost. Besides, its an elite group in Nigeria who get the money and they are quite safe. Extracting oil in Nigeria is reasonably cheap compared to the US Britain etc.

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa at 177 million people.

It is also an example of a broken state where the government controls the areas near the cities and oil wells, but the rest of the country is patrolled by armed militia. Other examples are Sierra Leone where the SAS had a major battle, and DRC - The Congo. Angola isn't much chop either. Ivory Coast is best known for the trade in blood diamonds and you wouldn't go anywhere without friends and weapons.

Nigeria on any simple analysis is a wealthy nation because of its oil reserves. Nevertheless most of the money doesn't trickle down to the general population who live in abject poverty.

I'm an armchair expert so what the heck - here are the possibilities:

1. A small force of SAS/Delta/Seals/French Legion fly in with local support and conduct a surgical strike to rescue the kidnapped girls. Only works if the girls are all held in one place and air support is minutes away.

2. Marines/Rangers/Paras etc assault the positions and hope their intel is accurate, and furthermore hope to effect a rescue before the girls are hurt.

3. Someone pays these bastards an awful sum of money as a ransom.

My comment about the oil companies was pretty much a ' tongue in cheek ' comment. With virtually all of Africa run along tribal or religious lines, I cant see the continent ever being much more settled than it is now. Would be an amazing place if not for outside interference.

The issue of the school girls will fade and their fate will be just another sorry chapter in the history of Africa. I can not see outside intervention by western forces as happening, and the Nigerians themselves ( the ones in power ) dont really give a toss.

Oddly, the protest lobby over there were holding a LOT of placards in front of the cameras written in English... so we know a) someone is behind the scenes organising the PR campaign and b) they are targeting certain western countries for assistance.

This kind of chaos is just what the rich loves, do you think ***** oil would be allowed to trash the place with spills all the time if they had some kind of safe stable society over there...
