Was padlocked to my bike in the Greenlane Countdown carpark tonight, looks like they used bolt-cutters to snap the padlock while I was inside (for about 20mins) and took off with it. Only had it since Friday :angry2: (imported).

Won't be many in NZ yet as they're a relatively new model (basically a Duke with a 'peak'). Hadn't installed the pinlock yet so will be missing (comes standard on these). Had also started to fit it to my odd shaped head via judicial sanding, so I should be able to tell if it's mine by removing the lining. Looks like this:

Bugger!

hope it pops up or you can recoup the costs somehow

shit! I park in there quite often, and only use a cheapie lock to lock the helmet through the bars..

Gonna be a bit more careful from now on...

Where did you park? I usually bump up the kerb by the pick up service spaces..

You should be right, I was parked miles away by comparison, under the trees running along the side road, in the (relative) dark :stupid:.

Manager was kind enough to let me leave the bike in the shop entry way though while I went home to retrieve another helmet. Been locking my helmet to the bike for decades, first time I've ever lost one.

Bloody bastards!

I'm really sorry to hear that. It's a nice looking helmet and even more annoying is that it was a new one. Will keep my eyes open down here, just in case.

I often wonder, though, when I see people leaving their helmets on their bikes, usually unlocked. Can't believe they stole yours, even though it was locked to the bike. No chance to get any video footage?

You could make a post with a picture of the helmet on your fb page. We can share it and maybe someone will recognise the helmet, especially if it is a rare one.

Actually post something on my FB page? Madness! Funny the guy in the taxi suggested looking for video footage as well, very CSI, but I doubt if the Police will be all that interested (case in point: I rang the crime reporting line 4 times earlier tonight, got cut off 4 times...will try again in the morning.) They left me a piece of the padlock as a souvenir, though.

Thanks Conny, not sure I'm gonna want it back though if I don't know where it's been.

they will be when it appears in next episode of ten-seven during an armed robbery. Looking on TM there's a quite a few new ones available for sale.

True that. But at least they wouldn't get away with it.

You could also post the video on fb if you find one. Hope you managed to talk to someone on the crime hotline yet. I would have gone directly to the police station to report this, but it's not as busy here.

CSI hehe, I hope you bagged and tagged the padlock. They will likely have fingerprints on them. :)

Yup answered first pop in the morning, nice young thing took all my details and also asked if I needed victim support (aww bless). Insurance is a bust due to helmet being worth the same as the excess, so I've ordered a different one from Motomail (cheers Fern) 'cos I've got some vouchers for there, which eases the financial pain a little - you should approve, it's a Bell this time.

Been carrying my little piece of nipped padlock shank around in my pocket and showing it to anyone who'll listen, so no forensics there anymore I think. Also ordered a big, honkin' u-lock off the web for next time.

Haha, sure do approve. Which one did you get?

I've got one of those little snap bike locks on my bike for double D ring helmets. Not sure how secure that is though.

It's a Revolver Evo like this:

No groovy graphics unfortunately (it's a flip up). No pinlock either which is a shame.

My new lock weighs 2kg and would have to be cut twice with an angle grinder, I may be over-reacting a little.

Given its value and the ease of nicking it, or just being scratched by some passing wanker, why don't you take it with you when you park up?

Just as much (probably more) chance of this wanker scratching it / dropping it while carrying it around. The bags that come with most helmets have got to be the most useless things ever invented, plus I've got another bag I need to carry already. Bike's my only transport, don't have the option of using a car for shopping etc. Do have a top box, but the locking mechanism on that is probably less secure than the padlock I used to have, and the old new helmet wouldn't fit with the peak. This one might.

Just wear the helmet all the time then. It can be like a beanie, but cooler because it cost a lot and has a flash logo. Trust me, the ladies love a man in a label beanie. Be a trend setter. Added bonus of using a tinted visor as classy sunnies. Best bonus is saving all the money on haircuts and hair products! Safe from theft.... Unless you're coming up for a beheading?

Another helpful post brought to you by our sponsors, boredom and sleep deprivation.

Edit: Although from what I remember you won't save much money from haircuts and hair products.

This! +1

...what happens if it rains?(won't your lid get wet inside?), or the bike falls over? (damaging both the bike and helmet!), add theiving pricks nickin em, and fuckers who just like to break/steal or fill said helmets with soft drink an such

...no thanks , I don't ever leave my lid with the bike, and for very good reason's.

I've had one stolen from my bike. Ever since I've always carried my helmet with me.

Your best bet to ensure further helmet protection would be to prospect for a 1% MC.
When the patched members are in the super market you will be standing guard on the bikes to make sure such a atrocity never happens again.

Alternatively you could wear it on your head everywhere and call anyone that tells you to remove it a racist. They should leave you well alone after that.

Nice helmet btw

well, after reading this all i can say is im really glad i shifted to the other end of the country where the roads are better and everybody leaves their helmets with their bikes and given that most of us down here are all weather riders we don't really worry to much if it rains a little and our helmets get wet and given that we get to deal with the odd gale force breeze we learn to park our bikes with the side stand down so that they do not fall over. i do know the odd person whos helmet would actually smell better and look cleaner if someone was kind enough to pour soft drink in to it for them.

Bullshit Rusty. Had my helmet hanging off the bars in winton one day, and some fucker put a dead bird in it. Would have been nice if they scraped all the maggots off it first, the bird that is, not my helmet. At least it was a nice day, and I just rode back through the otapiri gorge with no helmet.:2thumbsup

Noticed it before putting it on thankfully. That helmet is reserved for my Irish mates when they come over for a ride.;)

Sucks to have that happen.

Thats why I have never left my helmet on the bike. Will rather carry than loose.

I work in the south auckland area so I will keep a look out. Wont be to hard to miss.

How does it compare with the Caberg?

Bell was $350 (less some vouchers I had), same as the Caberg shipped. So far I like it - much firmer fit than the Caberg but bearable, double D ring strap instead of a clip, locking mechanism is all metal (Caberg has metal arm/plastic catch), lack of pinlock hasn't been an issue as the visor hasn't fogged up yet even in the rain this week, so the anti-fog coating works (hasn't really been cold yet though.)

Main things I don't like about the Bell are the smaller visor opening, less substantial chin bar and rougher interior lining material. And the fact that I had to shell out the extra money for it cos some a'hole stole the other one.

You look the part wearing a face cloth on your head Rodney...I have a helmet here not in use at the moment if your need something to see you through until your replacement is sought.

Edit: I see you have it sorted already?..:2thumbsup

Thanks. I am currently looking to replace my current lids. I love them but they turn 5 in August. Shame they don't make the FG-15 anymore or an equivalent.
That bell looks like an option as have the cabergs I have seen on the net but can't find anywhere to try a Caberg on. Will have a lol at the bells this. Weekend.
