View Full Version : Cheaper long-term parking advice in Auckland?

Hi Guys,
I'm new to the forum so I might as well introduce myself first. I'm a 21 year old Unitec student studying Bachelor's or Automotive Engineering, I have a 2007 Cbr1000rr fireblade. I'm currently living in South Auckland however I'm contemplating moving out of my parents house (finally) and would like to be able to use my bike regularly. I'm wondering whether any of you guys out there know where you can park long term for cheap (or free) and where it's going to be safer than leaving it out on the streets' free parking. I'm sure there have been people before me who have gone through this issue. I'm only a student and I won't have a lot of money when I move out so don't want to pay 50$ a week for bike parking.
I did have a look at the sticky before posting however, that was more of an issue for AUT parking. I don't currently have any idea where exactly I'm going to be staying in CBD, but some good reliable options would be nice. Thanks in advance to whoever tries to help me.
Cheers!! :) :) :D :D

Stay at home as long as you can... until you've finished your degree at the very least. Lots of cunts don't have that luxury, so don't pass it up if you actually do.

Haha, I've been wanting to move out for quite a while as I want to experience living by myself as well as many other reasons such as 1) living closer to where I study than where I live right now. Currently have to travel around 30km each way just to go to uni and back. 2) I want to get to closer to cbd because I mean who doesn't. 3) To have more privacy and freedom. Appreciate your advice however. :)
If someone could tell me about my options to park my bike in the CBD, that would be great. Cheers.

Fuck that, I'd hate living in the CBD. Everything is more expensive, and as you're finding, things like parking aren't easy.
As for parking, leaving it on a street isn't really safe. Plenty of stolen bikes, damaged etc. Ideally, park it off the street and out of sight. If you're really CBD (ie, apartment) other option is monthly parking in a parking garage, but that's not particularly cheap either.

Put up a want notice in the area you live. One of my former staff used to happily give up 2 meters of their storage locker for the knowledge someone would be coming and going from the lockup under the apartment building at least 2 days a week... And a tenner a week.
Not for me company paid 23 grand a year for me to have a reserved park. I offered for them to pay me 10k more instead. But that was the wrong budget.
Stupid phone / Tapatalk, apologies in advance.

No offense but you want secure, in the CBD, and cheap? You get to pick one, maybe two if you're lucky.
Myself, I got lucky and got the last two.

Find an apartment building with a lift built for fat people, park bike in room! :)
Big Dogs advice is prob best.
Failing that leave bike at Parents place and go grab it via bus/train for proper rides on weekends.
If your insured you might find it uneconomic to have bike with you living at dingy student flat/high risk location etc...
Cool for CBD lifestyle, would love to do that, go for it, your only young once. If I were you I'd either sell the bike or store it for few years to save some dollars.
It's tough to go bikeless for awhile but feels great when you get back into it.

A lot of people use the Auckland Council civic car park as there own personal bike park. It's free but would be locked in overnight.
Safest parking place is at home man. Secure parking with freedom of access is expensive as a rule, and the cheap, well, you have insurance right? I rented garage space in churchur briefly and the fawkers treated my stuff like their own. Not saying everywhere is like that but I wouldn't do it again with unknowns.
And fawk the staying at home advice. Get amongst it if it is within budget. Life lessons and all that. You can move back if it all turns to shit and you'll still be a better person for it than if you sat at home where it is safe.

Hey, that sounds llike a good work place! haha. Yeah I might think about doing that when it comes closer to the time of actually moving out which isn't too far away.

Yeah I understand it's a toughie but I'm sure people have found solutions before. If you don't mind me asking, where do you park for cheap in the CBD?

Unfortunately, I'm going to be working as well and will need some form of transport for convenience for a busy uni-work schedule. I do have a car personally as well at home but again, parking will be 50$ a week at least.
A lot of people use the Auckland Council civic car park as there own personal bike park. It's free but would be locked in overnight.
Hey, thanks for the info I have just looked it up online and it seems that it is indeed free and operational timings aren't too bad. Do you know anyone personally who uses that carpark? Would like a second opinion on how secure they think their bike is there.
Thanks all for the help, new to the forum, so sorry if it's in the wrong section or something.

No I currently don't have insurance as I don't currently have a job yet. however I think it will be a lot since I'm on restricted license for motorbike, yes I know it's going to be a slight problem but it will save me a lot of time (in traffic hours) and some petrol money + I get to stick to riding rather than driving an automatic Toyota. Haha.
Yeah I agree, I feel moving out is the right choice for me and have made up my mind assuming I can sort out the financials which I hope will happen soon enough. Cheers!

Leave the car at your parents. Get it when you need it. I bet it won't be that often if you're living in the CBD. The whole point to living there is you can walk or cycle to anything in minutes. Or public transport a little further afield. If you're not up for that you are wading your money in the CBD.

I park for free, at work. Not particularly secure tho.

Actually I let my 2ic, or another staff member use it as needed and availed myself of the free motorcycle parking provided by the same building.
Durham st car park. Can't speak for now but that used to be policy as long as you did not use a car space to park. Lots of "dead space" to park. Gated from 2200 to 0600. Need an access card. Fancy bikes got stolen by vans a couple of times but.

You have a CBR1000 and you're on your restricted...... Insurance will be a losing battle.downgrade to a learner legal bike, pocket the extra cash to spend on parking, insurance and petrol.

No way, I had to ride a ninja 250 to do my restricted a couple of weeks ago and it was appalling after riding my cbr. I don't think I'll ever switch back to a lams approved bike, I would prefer not riding at all. I think I will be able to manage parking and petrol financially, as for insurance. That's kind of why I was contemplating paying 50$ a week to rent a parking space where ever I stay so it's "secure".

No matter how secure the parking is, if a thief wants it, a thief gets it. Insuring a cheaper bike and parking it in front of the mongrel mob head quarters will be safer than having a nice bike uninsured in 'secure' parking.

Civic carpark. there is a 2004 Brutale there that hasn't moved for 2 years! If that is not a sign it's safe...

You can also try the Auckland city council car park on high street. Again this is something that's locked up overnight. Free parking for two wheelers and right in the CBD.

More likely not a lot of them about so not much demand for spares. Soon as the wrong person breaks there one it will be gone burger lol...
Sadly there's no such thing as secure parking anymore, if someone wants what you've got there's a million ways to take it. Best you can do is GPS tracker and something to slow them down, make it awkward/noisy to move etc...
There's been a few oddball bikes stolen down here lately that you wouldn't think worthy of taking...
My shed got done, they took a $1000 mountainbike that was prob only worth half that at time secondhand/used etc and didn't touch the GSXR.... Well no one wants a GSXR anyway!!!
There are a few parking buildings in Auckland that will let you park bikes there long term for free, you just have to look around. I park mine in a great undercover carpark every day during working hours and I see bikes in there that never move for months.
I would tell you what one but last time I told someone what building it was my workmates almost kicked my bike out of the carpark cos the guy I told kept parking like a knob.

See, you have identified a very cheap (almost lucrative) and effective solution all by yourself! No help was needed. All you need to do now is implement it.

Hey dude, just checked the website out. Price seems pretty good however I don't know if the 10pm close will suit me in the future. It's definitely worth a look though. Also, do you know where exactly it is? or how far it is from symond street etc. Thanks for the info!

I can assure you I'm a pretty sensible guy. Though if you don't want to tell me that's fine, I can understand the frustration.
